Hi, this is my first post here, and my first go at eldar. I usually play Tau, and I think I've come to depend on my broadsides to do well.
As my title says, I want to try a totally mechanised army, but dont really have the experience with this army to know what works well, I've been reading alot of posts here and have made some modifications to my list already but would just like some more input : )

hq:
Autarch
jet bike / laser lance / mandiblasters

(farseer or not?)

Elites:
3 shining Spears (to go with Autarch)
exarch (power weapon or not?)

5 Wraithguard
warlock w/ enhance
waveserpent
vectored engiones / star engines / spirit stones

troops:
10 dire avengers
exarch w/ power weapon / shimmershield
defend / bladestorm
wave serpent
v. engines / s.engines / spirit stones

6 jetbikes
w / 2 shuriken cannons

5 jetbikes
w / 1 shuriken cannon

fast attack:
2 vypers
star cannons / star engines

heavy support:
fire prism
w/ star engines / spirit stones

total: 1491

As far as I can tell everything is legal! any comments would be greatly appreciated. I mainly play against space marines, csm's, and necrons, occasionally nids.
In my first draft I had 2 squads of 5 wraithguard in wave serperpents and no dire avengers but then i thought I might be a little light on troops for objective missions...

cheers all

Few things:

1. Shining spears are fast attack.

2. Wraithguard dont need enhance, drop that and take destructor or even conceal. Better yet, dont take wraithguard, they are a huge points sink.

3. What guns are you putting on your wave serpents? I would say brightlance or missile launcher, you are missing some much needed anti tank.

4. Dont take vypers, especially with starcannons, which are the most overpriced piece of equipment in the eldar army.

5. You dont need starengines on vypers or fire prism, you dont need spirit stones on anything but a transport. Vehicle upgrades usually go like this.

Wave Serpent (highest to lowest priority)
- Spirit Stones
- Star Engines
- Vectored Engines

Fire Prism(highest to lowest priority)
- Holofields
thats all you need

Vypers (highest to lowest priority)
None

Falcon (highest to lowest priority)
- Holofields
- Spirit Stones
- Star Engines
- Vectored Engines

6. Give your shining spears exarch hit and run

7. Find the points to upgrade the second squad of bikes to 6 and put another cannon in it.

8. Some people would disagree with me, but keep your dire avenger squad consistent. Either take Defend and a shimmer shield/pw, or take dual cats and bladestorm. Mix and match adds versatility, but comes out to too many points.

With the points from dropping unneeded vehicle upgrades, vypers, and wraithguard, add a close combat squa (banshees, harlies) to put in the leftover wave serpent. Or, add a farseer to ride with the dire avengers. Also, consider adding heavy support, one of the best slots for eldar. Going with your mechy theme, fire prisms are great, you could use two. If you want variety, take war walkers with all scatter lasers. They can provide mass firepower in a fix, and move and shoot every turn.

Hi burninghand, many thanks for your response : )
I've made some alterations like taking out the vypers completely, and using the points to give shining spear exarch withdraw and the wave serpents brightlances. I've also managed to jig things around so I have 6 jetbikes in the 2nd squad with 2 shuricannons, and given the fire prism holofields only.

I'll have to have a think about the wraithguard, coz as you say they are big point sink. I do love them, but on the other hand I am light on c/c units.

much to ponder...

thanks a lot mate : )

This is, for the most part, redundant :D

Blacksky:

As a long time Eldar player who has recently started in on Tau, I think I can help you with some of the theoretical differences, and where your list needs work because of this.

One of the big differences I've noticed is that Tau don't spend a lot on unit upgrade characters, where as Eldar do. In point of fact, some of our aspect squads may have up to one-quarter to one-third of total unit points spent on them and their various upgrades. However, these upgrades usually upgrade the entire squad and often times are what make the squad go from good to excellent.

So, for your Shining Spears unit which, as was stated by BH, is Fast Attack. They could really use an Exarch with Skilled Rider and Withdraw. A star lance on him is helpful as well.

Another difference in Tau and Eldar is elite/Aspect squad sizes. Tau battlesuits can be good as 'monats' or single model units. Eldar Aspect warriors are not well suited to small squad sizes most of the time. Because Eldar tend toward tin-foil armor, and because they are a 'first-strike' army, aspect squads do better when filled out. Some can do smaller squads, but for the most part, no.

In the case of Shining Spears, they need a hefty hit in the first turn of assault because of how Star Lances work. 3-4 hitting home is great, but you have to get 3-4 there. Hence, 5 man Spear Squads are better.

Unlike Tau, Eldar vehicle upgrades didn't get better going from 4th to 5th Ed. rules. But the Serpents integrated energy field is pretty useful (especially against Tau :D ). Over all, it's better to go with stripped down tanks. BH gave a very good list of useful upgrades for each. To keep the speed up, don't upgrade the defensive weapons on Eldar vehicles. Another difference is that all Eldar tanks are 12/12/10, so transports and tanks are all hard to kill. Vypers aren't worth it unless you can perform opern-heart surgery using a flimsy razor blade.

Last thing, Wraithguard are a big money sink as well as a points sink. Even by 40K standards. But again, it's all about what you like and want to play with. I own 20 Wraithguard but thats cause they look friggin sweet deployed at 24". Getting first turn with them and the avatar in a DoW missions is way too fun.

hey Darquewing and burninghand, thanks alot for your advice. The great thing is I have quite a large disposable income so the price of pricier units like wraithguard and shining spears i can live with :act-up:
I will see how my army gets on for a couple of games and then make the necessary adjustments, like a c/c squad here more tank killers there etc.

I know what you mean about tau upgrades, I used to kit my squads out with everything, but now I am a lot more inclined to spend the extra points on more fire warriors. I find shield drones are really the only thing I take as a rule, on the broadsides that is.

Shame vypers arent a bit better. My local games store has a couple of those apocalypse wind rider host boxed sets for dirt cheap, and they come with two vypers, which I have to admit was a part of the reason why they were in my army. But I guess I can sell them online and make a bit of the money back.

I'm leaning toward war walkers too... 6 scatter lasers at s6 hehe :act-up:
