Guard Squads

Now that the guard squads are cheaper and it's $22 for 10 guys, what are you guys doing to flesh out your armies? Sorry if this has been covered in other threads, but I wasn't quite sure what the search terms should be. Any suggestions? I could use the catachans I have and GS them up to look cadian-esque, but I feel that might be more effort than I'm willing to put in. Thoughts?

Yeah - its a little more difficult to build a massed infantry IG army from scratch these days. As far as I can tell, the best thing would be to just work slow, start at small points values and gradually build to something larger.

As for fleshing out your army a little, well, people are probably running more tanks than before, as well as running all veteran squad armies. It's an easier way to get those points building.

Chimeras.
Honestly, the best current setup for IG is mounted Vets, so you really do not need as many bodies, just more transports.
That would be arguable! But it is definitely the easiest way of playing guard with any success.

Because I like massed infantry and have 3 platoons at 35 strength each, im going to keep running platoons of regular soldiers. Though now I think I may squash my conscripts for veterans or something, not sure yet, I also might be squashing my snipers(which I was using as ratlings) unless anybody has any ideas for how I should use them, as I have like 7 or 9. I also dont plan on using any valkyries or vendetta`s as I dont think there should be aircraft used in 40k unless your playing ridiculously big games.

While Valks and Vendetts are infact "aircraft" they are treated as skimmers in game terms and really don't make the game any more complex than any other skimmer. Plus the models are wicked cool and the power they bring to the field is incredible for the points you drop into them. I mostly like it cause I can tell my friends "Dude I have a flying thing!"

Back on topic, while I like Armored Vet squads, it'll be hard to part me from my beloved massed infantry. I've been using them for years now, and although the power of a vet army is considerable, the thought of scaling my numbers upon numbers of guardsmen down to a handful of vets and chimeras kinda makes me sad =(
