Four 2250 lists

List 1: This first list is intended to be a relatively compy list -- no lord choice, no treeman. It's got quite a lot of core, too. I'm going for an active magic defense approach with the three alters (including the "controversial" sniper alter), warhawks, wild riders, and eagle.

Characters:

Standard Alter
Amber Alter
Noble w/ Alter, GW, LA, Shield, Hunter’s Talon, Pageant of Shrikes
Scroll Caddy

Core:

4x 10 Glade Guard
5x 8 Dryads

Special:

6 Wild Riders w/ mus, std, war banner
6 Wild Riders w/ mus
8 Wardancers w/ mus
3 Warhawk Riders

Rare:

Great Eagle

List 2: A variation on list one, this forgoes the scroll caddy and some core units for a Treeman Ancient. With no mages at all, this list is pretty vulnerable to magic -- but I'm hoping the four dryad units will provide enough screening to let the active magic defense kick in. That said, it may be wise to cut the sniper alter for the scroll caddy and go back up to 8 wardancers.

Characters:

Treeman Ancient w/ Cluster of Radiants, Annoyance of Netlings
Standard Alter
Amber Alter
Noble w/ Alter, GW, LA, Shield, Hunter’s Talon, Pageant of Shrikes

Core:

3x 10 Glade Guard
4x 8 Dryads

Special:

6 Wild Riders w/ mus, std, war banner
6 Wild Riders w/ mus
7 Wardancers w/ mus
3 Warhawk Riders

Rare:

Great Eagle

List 3: The first of two dual treeman lists. This one is magic heavy, packing very strong traditional magic defense and some decent magic offense as well. The Spellweaver will likely go lore of beasts or lore of life depending on the terrain and opponent. Restoring a treeman to full wounds is pretty tempting! I must say though that between the expensive characters and the two treemen this list seems a little sparse.

Characters:
Spellweaver w/ L4, Wand of Wych Elm, Glamourweave, Steed
Spellsinger w/ L2, Dispel Scroll, Cal’s Staff
Branchwraith w/ L1, Annoyance of Netlings, Cluster of Radiants
Noble w/ BSB, Eagle, Stone of Crystal Mere, Sword of Might, Light Armor

Core:

10 Glade Guard w/ musician
10 Glade Guard w/ musician
8 dryads
8 dryads w/ nymph

Special:
6 Wild Riders w/ Mus, Std, War Banner
8 War Dancers

Rare:

List 4: And here is the focused combat version of list 3. I've eschewed the lord chose and gone for more combat characters while substantially beefing up my special choices. I've also switched to an all-dryad core. The champions on the wild riders are a little unorthodox, but I wasn't sure what else to do with the 36 points -- upping the wardancer unit to 10 seemed wasteful.

Characters:

Scroll Caddy
Standard Alter
Amber Alter
Eagle BSB

Core:

4x 8 Dryads

Special:

6 Wild Riders w/ FC, War Banner
6 Wild Riders w/ Mus, Champ
8 War Dancers
3 Warhawk Riders

Rare:

Characters:

Standard Alter
Amber Alter
Noble w/ Alter, GW, LA, Shield, Hunter’s Talon, Pageant of Shrikes I don't think I would make this guy an alter. Would rather have him in a unit for some protection.

I think I would give something up here to get a unit of waywatchers.

Special:

6 Wild Riders w/ mus, std, war banner
6 Wild Riders w/ mus
8 Wardancers w/ mus
3 Warhawk Riders

Rare:

Not a big fan of the sword of might. A normal spear will give you the same strength on the charge. You could spend the points on something else. I like the BSB on the eagle though.

This is the type of list where I would use treekin. I don't really think the wild riders or warhawks fit that well here. Wardancers and dryads are great for the flanks with the treemen cruising up the centre. With a unit of treekin between them I think you could do some good damage. You have the alters for hero hunting and getting to warmachines.
Some fine lists here,

Ok, I've been thinking and running numbers on the treekin and can't help but agree with you that this would be a solid list for them. You can buy 21 dryads for the price of 4 treekin. The dryads do more damage to almost all targets, but you're never going to get all 21 in base to base, of course. The treekin can soak WAY more damage from light attacks (S4 and lower, with or without AP) but the dryads are more survivable against S5 and higher, although the difference only really starts to show at S6. However, given that I already have 2 treemen the enemy already has a lot of targets for his high strength attacks, so forcing him to spread it out will likely be to my advantage.

I see what you are saying about wild riders not fitting in particularly well, although I disagree to a certain extent. Hitting from the flanks to remove ranks is going to be key to winning as treemen/treekin don't actually cause all that much damage themselves.

As far as the warhawk riders go, I agree on principle but I'm worried that I need them for magic defense. With only two alters to hunt war machines, mages, missile troops etc. at 2250... I feel like they are going to get spread really thin and having a third option would be helpful. They don't contribute to my main plan itself, but I wonder if I need them for support.

So that brings us to the biggest question -- how to fit the treekin. I'm fine with dropping one wild rider unit and two champs, which saves a total of 192 points. That leaves 68 points to scrounge. I could drop a dryad unit but that would leave my core awfully thin. I could drop the warhawks, but I have my aforementioned concerns, plus that would leave me with an awkward 52 point overage. What would you recommend?

You have two choices if you want to keep the warhawks, which I don't mind. I like warhawks myself.

First you could drop the dryad unit as you said. Or, you could drop the eagle from the BSB, and one wardancer. Of course then you would want a champ in the wardancer unit, which is where he would probably end up, so you would probably also have to drop the sword of might.
