I don't know whether or not this should be in the army lists section, but I am asking for advice on what to buy to start a VC army.

I am going to be playing doubles with my dad's Tk army which consists of chariots, archers, swordsmen, heavy cavalry (not so heavy) and liche priests. What should I buy to start off my VC army in order to support this setup and make a lethal combo?

If you want something to compliment his army, I would suggest going with some solid core troops, if he has a lot of chariots, use your units of skeleton to be anvils and hold the against the charge, and he can use his chariots to hit the flanks.

Also bringing some magic is a must, let the TK player cast his magic first, since it will always go off, and your opponent has to use there dispel dice carefully, since he doesn't know what spells of your may go off, and he may end up letting tomb kings spells go through to save dice for your spells. If you do your spells first, you may not cast some things, allowing him to better distribute his dispel dice against spells.

You may need to bring some cavalry of your own, just so you have some good fast moving and hard hitting cavalry

Bring two vamps, or a vamp and a necro if you want to save some points and still have a decent magic phase. bring along some bound spells, like the book of arkhan, and this will increase your magic phase even more. with only 2 characters you should have enough points to fit a lot into an army, with some hard hitting units, and some standard troops.

Here is my version of a 1k army... worked pretty well (for a first timer) last time...

General with Grave Guard (365 pts)
1 Vampire @ 170 pts (General)
The Flayed Hauberk
Dark Acolyte
Lord of the Dead
10 Grave Guard (full command) @ 195 pts
The Banner of the Barrows

Vampire with Skeletons (391 pts)
1 Vampire (Battle Standard Bearer) @ 210 pts
Book of Arkhan
Avatar of Death (Shield)
Dark Acolyte
18 Skeleton Warriors (full command except champion) @ 181 pts
War Banner

Skeleton Warriors (157 pts)
15 Skeleton Warriors (full command except champion) @ 157 pts
Banner of the Dead Legion

Dire Wolves (80 pts)
10 Dire Wolves @ 80 pts

Total Roster Cost: 993

since my next match will be 1vs1vs1, my plan will be to bunker and advance (or maybe move back?) slowly, while replenishing my army... dire wolves for flanking and war machine-hunting...
feel free to comment...

I'd say that you probably ought to go with eitehr two units of wolves or else giant bats (which benefit from better IoN rules), and get Summon Creatures of the night on one of your vampires, as then you can spam on the critters. Alternatively, BOTH your Vampires should have Lord of the Dead and be raising the block skellie units up from word dot with IoNs..
You can start with two units of 10 then, or maybe 15.

In such small points games, the undead ability to bulk out certain units beyond starting strength will really tell...

I also think you NEED to have your champions on Skellie units, firstly they can be rezd so makes your raising more poinst efficient, BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY you can protect your Vampire from challenge heroes like Caradyran, Bretonnian paladins etc.

I suggest you have fell bats instead of dire wolves because fell bats move faster which helps in case your opponent has any war machines or some archers.

Instead of two units of skellies you should have a unit of 20 skellies and a unit of zombies. Then your vampires can use their magic for any offensive spells in the first round.

If you have the points then you should probably add a corpse cart. It gives you a bound spell that you opponent will have to use dispel dice. If they don't then it can give your entire army ASF which is a big advantage except against HE because they always strike first and higher initiative.

I highly suggest a unit of cairn wraiths at this level, either 5 man or 6 man with a banshee. Proper using they should cause absolute carnage. Just keep them away from flamers and it should all go well! What I'd probably bring would be 2 decent sized units of ghouls, 5 naked black knights, 2 caster vampires and 5 Cairne Wraiths with a banshee. I've used this list plenty of times and its always done well. Good luck at your tourney.
