Target Priority

I was just wondering how much of a target priority our dreadnauts are. I know they aren't as good as some of the other choices on the field, but a kid at my local shop is starting a CSM army as his first and already has one that he really wants to field. Would it be more beneficial for him to run just the one or take multiple to make them seem more threatening? He's already planning to field Defilers (he had no clue how good they actually were, just thought they looked really cool at first) and Berzerkers in Rhinos.

Where I play Dreadnaughts seem to be a pyschological threat more than a real threat. I personally love to take them, even though they get blown up turn 1 or 2. This is in fact a good thing! If they are shooting their anti-tank at your dread then they arn't shooting at your berzerker filled rhino's, which are the real threat in the army.

Combining the threats of Dreadnoughts and Defilers is (in my opinion) a highly effective strategy. It gives the opponenet a ton of armor to shoot at if you include the Rhino transports for your troops and inevitably SOMETHING will get through and start causing some serious damage. Keep in mind that a Dreadnought in CC is only a little less effective than a Defiler. It won't be that uncommon for opponents to let the Dreadnoughts go in favor of killing the Defilers (they'll pay for it don't worry).

This set up, along with say a Daemon Prince and some troop squads with Meltaguns (maybe Plasma if you don't think you'll be seeing much armor) is great and really effective. When running this, I typically use two dreddies, two defilers, 3 CSM with Meltaguns, Maybe one squad of Berzerkers with a Lord and then usually one predator just to keep up the AT power.

Hope this helps. If you like what I've mentioned, I'll be happy to go look the lists exactly the type them up for you. Just let me know.

In my circle, the only time I take dreads really is in Apoc games, and my friends have learned that they need to take them out fast. I usually charge them in to take out enemy armor, and if they get into CC with the tanks, game over armor. They make great can openers.

Heh, i love dreads. Atm i only have one though, so it gets hit with all the antitank. hotspike18 hit it right on the head, you dont need them to survive, just distract enough get whatever the real threat is to the front lines (in my case raptors, havoc squads in rhinos) so two would probably be sufficient. They are REAL terrors if they actually make it though :D
