As i sat down with my tyranids and started painting i had my thoughts of a nice color scheme.
I applied the chitin and base coats but then came the hard part.
How to make the chitin look nice?
I practiced some on some bases, to see if i could get thin strokes of paint, so it could like like feathering.
But since i picked white as my chitin color, it stood out to much. it didn't like nice at all.
This was my intended scheme..
This is how my miniature looks
Its painted in shadow grey then washed with asuremen blue and the chitin is painted with Vallejo game color Hexed Lichen.
Now, i think my standards are way to high from what i really can do (haven't painted much at all.. ) So i guess as these are my first.. i should settle with "nice" and not "awesome" .
But what to do with the chitin? Just highlight it? and then in what color? (Warlock purple? a mix of pink and my hexed lichen? any other color that would look nice? i hope to get a lighter color to make it stand out more on the table) Really need some help here as i am quite stuck at the moment.
Feather it in two stages mate, pink and then a 50/50 white/pink if you are going for a similar look to the picture you are referencing. You could also change it a little and add pink to your base colour at a 50/50 ratio and then do the 2nd level of feathering pure pink, it won't be too bright then.
Regal Blue + Liche Purple
Shade with Chaos Black
Layer on Liche Purple + Warlock Purple
Then do a couple of highlights with the mix above but keep adding Space Wolves Grey to the mix until you got pure Space Wolves Grey.
Ah, maybe my question was to hard to see in all that rambling =)
Its, i tried feathering. I researched the GW page and looked at a few videos. But even how much i try
it all just look horribly bad. Cant really tell what I'm doing wrong, to much paint, to thick strokes or even to much difference in the
color mixes.
The question would be, What can i do to make them look nice without the use of feathering.
Would it be sufficient to just highlight with a lighter color or is there some other nice technique i have missed in my searches.
Since i will be having over 70 models to paint, putting to much work down on each of these little ones might discourage me to continue (sadly, even tho i want a nice result, spending to much time on my first ever army, well it seems like a bad choice was i also want to play the game in a near future and not 2012 ^^l )
Hmm well you could try extreme highlighting using the same colours I mentioned mate, not sure how it would look though, but feathering really shouldn't be a problem as long as you have a steady hand, get down the local gamesworkshop and ask for a hands on tutorial. Watching instructional videos and reading tutorials can't beat practical instruction, I have learnt that from many years of martial arts and all the book smart guys that turn up and get a good kicking
Try drybrushing, heavily on half of the plate with the pink, then a lighter shade closer to the edges. That might work. You could also use even brighter colors, then go back with a wash to dull them down and smooth it all together. I also find matte varnishes (which are a good way to finish any model anyway) help blend colors together somewhat, too.
thanks for the replies . The talons really just got a lucky wash on them. As i really dont "know" how to use
advanced technieques yet, that look is something i will settle with.
But on to a new matter, i scrapped the purple chitin. It just didnt look nice even how much i tried fixing him up.
So i tried a new color on the chitin instead, and oh my do i like the new look. Makes them bright so you can see them from afar. Should stand out on the battle field (i tend to fix the bases with snow flock and stones drybrushed with different grays.)
But here is a new pic
I know he looks sloppy, got a few paintstrokes on the blue and the eyes and finished, but i think i repainted the chitin on him 3 times or more, so the following minis should look smoother and nicer, they will also be primed white instead of black.
I dont think i will touch the chitin for now, i should just try to finish my army and then worry about a more advanced look. I am temted to put some black wash just below the chitin edges so to speak, so it looks a little more shaded.
Well i think a projekt thread is soon to be, as i recently got my hive guard and biovore in the mail too.
And thanks again for replying!
