Would you be more apt to use Phoenix Lords if you were only able to use them as an Unique Character (in place of exarch) for their own Aspect? Maybe make them a little bit cheaper since they would no longer be an IC, but an unique character instead.

Or maybe bring back the Exarch Aspect battle squad from 2nd or 3rd edition (can't remember which) with them instead (balanced out a bit, of course).

Iunno. Thought of that all of a sudden. I'm curious to hear other people's opinion.

Not an Eldar player, but I think the Phoenix Lords would be a little too powerful to use as an "upgrade" character. Some of them are pretty mean in assault already, it would be unusual to also make them untargetable.

While this is true, they are quite expensive with the lowest being 190pts and highest being 230pts. So, they still wouldn't necessarily be taken in excess in most games. I'd forsee some special rule being used in which they cost an additional Force slot to use. With three Elite, two Fast Attack, one Heavy, there being 6 PL in all, I can see it being possible. Would get people to buy and actually USE these models to change things up.

Though, this all just an idea perpetuated by an imagiantion.

Not using up HQ slots would make them a bit more popular. Unless you're using up elite slots, and which point I think they'd actually become even less popular.

Really it just comes down to their points value vs what they do. I've even got a Karandas model, but I am haeing trouble tricking myself into thinking he's a good idea to actually play for his points cost.

I've tried out Jain Zar and Karandras both good but really expensive!! Karandras is best I think with scorpions as his 'stealth' rule gives them all a beautiful 3+ cover in hard cover - in assault the scorpions tear the heart out of the enemy and then Karandras/Exarch go last with their power claws and finish the enemy. The bad part about him is if your up against an enemy character with multiple power weapon attacks he's going to be going first and its going to be sad if he kills you before you strike :(. I like Jain Zar alot - I've ran her in a falcon with banshees or just with gaurdians. She kills everything she faces, termies, marines, scarab swarms etc. Lack of an invul again bites but at least only half of your enemies attacks hit her with her high WS, meaning you have a realistic chance of dodging powerfists. 'If she had a good invul marines would probably just start killing themselves rather than face her.'

Yriel might as well be a pheonix lord too, main difference being his lack of 'eternal warrior'. Seems a good bargain for as cheap as he is.

As ze_poodle mentioned - being an 'upgrade' character can be something of an advantage over being an IC - it's not a reason in of itself to be cheaper (many players would love to have a real retinue these days).

I could see them as elites choice which allows their aspect to then be taken as troops choices.

The only way pheonix lords will be any good is when they allow their aspect to become troops, and eldar actually having a transport designed to get our CC troops into combat.
That or some army wide rules they could apply.
They are pretty good, but by the same note they aren't really competitive
