Well got my first models painted up. I think they turned out pretty well. Went with the old DA color scheme, still need to put the red icons on the shoulders. And I plan on doing the crest on the Sergent's chest red, I also want to do some touch-ups on his robe. I still have a rhino to paint up, and I need to get a Ravenwing Attack Squad ordered for my next set of things to model and paint.
They are all headless because I am currently waiting on an order of Steam Knight heads to come in from MaxMini.
And please forgive me for the picture quality, I'm using my phone as my camera.
Not bad! I really like the cloak on the first guy, probably my favorite bit of them all. They could use some highlighting and a splash of a few extra colors I think though. You've got a lot of flat black and solid silver items on those buggers :soldier:
Yeah, I was really happy with how my first cloak turned out. I was really worried. Since the pic I've touched up the lighter areas light the top of the head and the knees with some lighter colors. I'm thinking about adding some brown to the pouches, but am having trouble figuring out what other colors to add. I really like how the blue that I used on the purity seals looks against the black. Any suggestions would be welcome.
And yes I plan on doing some highlights on the black with some grey, just forgot to get the grey when I was at the shop.
You could paint the skulls and wings on the bolter blue or gold or something to go with whatever theme you want, and maybe make the grips of the bolters not silver...those probably wouldn't be metal
Well done, mate. As was said before, highlighting the dark areas would be nice. You could highlight with grey or, take the anime style, and highlight with dark blue. I kinda like the blue personally. They're looking good!
I find it really depressing how even beginners blow me out of the water. Good job though, at least I can take solace in my potential opponents having attractive armies. :]
So last night I got the pouches painted brown and painted the grips on the bolters blue. I also got some highlight lines on one of t he minis but didn't feel like mixing black and white all night to do highlights. I'm going to stop and get some grey on my way home today. I'l get some pics up tonight.
The kind words are very encouraging. Thanks guys. Hopefully I can find a better place to take some well lit pics.
Also, not that we don't appreciate well painted minis in the army forums, you might want to post these in the Painting Hobby forum on these boards as well. You'll find a lot of very experienced painters there that can offer a lot more advice than I can with painting I'm just happy my minis are reasonable from a good 3-4ft distance when I'm done with them
Yeah, that should work. I was just thinking that you probably want to avoid an overly dark base with the color scheme you're doing. Otherwise the models gets lost in all the darkness. My local Nid player ran into that problem. He has a very dark purple and red color scheme but he used dark (nearly black) gravel bases. The purple looks jet-black with it and you can see almost no detail in the models unless you hold them up in front of you. Crying shame because he did a good job on them. So yeah either a light and/or brightly colored base should work well.
Finally getting an update posted. I've since gotten some highlights done on the models. The grips on the bolters are now blue, along with the eyes on the helms. The MaxMini Steam Knight helms came in and they have been painted up and attached. I also hand painted the tac squad icons and old red Dark Angels icons on because the decals were pissing me off. Also got the first steps of some basing done. Let me know what you guys think. I'm really happy with how my first batch turned out. I am currently putting some raven wing bikers together, I am converting all of the bikes to choppers so its taking a little time. I'll get some pics up one I have them all glued. Also got Sammael's speeder glued together (got that thing doesn't fit together correctly), I want to fill in the gaps before I paint so that will probably happen after the bikers are glued.
i like this scheme, i never thought of doing them pre-heresy but it looks good, ive done mine in the DA green, but wish now id taken one of the second founding schemes like vengence or absolution. Looking good though, im always happy to see fellow DA players, i like the guy with bolter and BP, very cool idea, does he count as having a bolter or bp\chainsword?
the helmets are very good for pre-heresy DA IMO, keeps their armour looking slightly older than the new armour, keeps them looking like the Knights of the Order that they were.
keep us posted on the progress
Looking like a Vey good start there mate! The helmets look cool. Where did you get them from?
The metal looks nice and dark but I think a highlight would really bring it out, especially on the Helmets. At the moment they're looking a wee bit Dull.
I agree! These guys are looking really good. I like the additions to the painting you've done as well as the new helms and basing. I agree with Borak that a light highlight to the faceplates would really make them pop even more.
Here is a pic of one of my sergent bikers almost finished up. All that needs done is his base and some highlights on the black. I converted the bike into a chopper style bike instead of going with the normal bikes, as you can tell I don't like to do traditional stuff >.< Also does anybody have any tips on doing high lights on black? The high lights on my tac squad turned out ok but i'm finding out that I suck at high lights with a paint brush. I got a silver sharpie paint pen that I've done some highlights with and it turned out real nice, unfortunately sharpie does not have a grey paint pen and the blue turned out to be too light for the highlights.
First, I LOVE the helmets!! Second, you can use Shadow Grey to highlight black. It works well for you because it has a distinct blue cast to it. I think it would complement your paint scheme well. I really like the blue purity seals too. I agree, some chainmail highlights in the helms would really pop. The hand-painted logos on the shoulder pads also look very good. I think the gray sand on the base with some greenery is a good way to go. I recommend painting the sand, however. Paint it dark gray (or black) then dry brush lighter gray and eventually a light drybrush of white. Painted sand is way better than plain sand.
Excellet job! The chopper bike is really cool too...!
Diggin' the chopper conversion man, kudos. As for highlighting, I use a fine detail brush for my limited needs so I don't know what to recommend in terms of pens, sorry. But I do agree that Shadow Grey is my color of choice for highlighting/edging black.
