Page 66 last sentence of the new rulebook clearly states models with both first and last striking cancel one anotehr out. So High elf WHite Lions I always thought still strike first but according to that sentence seems like they work off their inniative value. How does everyone understand it to be true Specifically for High elf White lions, or any high elf with a great weapon for that matter.

The High elf ASF rule ( speed of assuryan) overrides the allways strike last that would come from a great weapon. That's why even a swordmaster/White lion strikes first and ignores his weapon's ASL.

No! ninja'd !

This question is asked in the FAQ and is written as follows:

"Q. The Speed of Asuryan special rule states that “all High Elves
have the special rule Always Strike First, regardless of the weapon
they are wielding.” How does this interact with a great weapons
Always Strike Last? (p43)
A. The army book will take precedence in this situation. For
example, a Sword Master would strike first with his great
weapon. If his Initiative value is equal to or higher than his
opponent’s, he will also benefit from a re-roll to hit."

so if the White Lions have great weapons, they will strike first.

So much ninjaing!

The ASF coupled with the both the step-up rule and high initiative making HE re-roll to hit really boosted the HE combat - curses to the HE - But, it sure made me want to try out a HE army, especially with the IoB set.

However, all other armies benefit from the step-up, too, so HE SM's can't just butcher and not get any hits back on them. So it evens out a bit. It's just the step-up rule along with steadfast that has really nerfed my cavalry army...sigh...

Er no. It completely makes HE, whose close combat was designed around charging in and killing everything and getting no, or very few attacks back, pretty hard to win a combat with.

aww... the poor unit with 2 str5 attacks that strike first at Ws6 with reroll to hit... :p I feel their pain.. when they dish it out.

It's GW's way of overcompensating the inherent.. erhm.. "shortcomings" all male elves suffer from.
Ow yeah, I said it!

But with the new step up rules it's * sigh * only fair. Because the old ASF without rerolls would be the worst thing ever for them and every unit in the high elf army would've been overcosted. Well yay you strike first, but with stepping up who cares? Now with the rerolls the points added into their pointcost still make sense, but without it they would be roughly... 4 -5 pts overcosted? And don't go telling me hitting on 3's with a reroll and wounding on 3's or 2's is not brutal. The odds that 10 swordmasters do the full 15 kills against some random t3 unit is baffelingly high compared to the odds other units in the game have to make a fraction of that number. My 12 pt longbeards would on average make about 4, swordmasters about 9 to 10.

Don't whine damnit. >< If concerned about being too fragile to stand up to counter attacks, I don't think high elves is the army for you :p

So, if us using Great weapons and being good at it compensates something, What are your cannons compensating? That's presumably the reason there's no dwarf-women, they all jumped off cliffs in frustration? :p
