Obliterators Tact

I've been running 3x preds in my chaos list for years and I thought it was time to give obliterators a try.....

In my new chaos Nurgle/Khorn mix list (1750-2000pts) I'm planning on running 5-6 rhino rush. Was thinking 3x groups of 2 obliverators Deepstriking in would compliment the strat.

My questions is..

1. Having a total of 6x Obliterators, what would be the best setup? two grps of 3x obliterators or three groups of 2x obliterators? (this is for deepstriking purpose only)

2. What would be the best weap to use against what, once the obliterators arrieves for action? With that I mean what would be best to use against a grp of marines etc.

Thanks.

to answer the questions, I would have to say

1. Don't deepstrike them, but if they are your only heavy choice,3 groups of 2 for maximum saturation. The problem with deepstrike is that even with 2, its 150 points of pure firepower that may or may not arrive in time. With 3 units of 2, place them in cover (preferably in a tall building for better LoS) and shoot away.

2. The weapon depends on the situation. Tank popping at long range, go for las, same with character sniping. a group of marines will be decimated at close range by the twin linked plasma guns, and if you are out of double tap range, try for the plasma cannon. Most vehicles will warrant a lascannon shot, but if someone drop pods a dread in close, go with multi-meltas (if he is over 6 " away), or use your twin linked meltas. Flamers are good at being flamers, so if there are squads of scouts hiding in cover, burn em all!

Hope this helps

Good catch bliss-giver! I completely forgot that hey have relentless.

Deepstriking is the way to go with terminators (search "Karmoon Special"), but the oblits really are better suited to being a firebase on turn 1.

I agree totally with all of the above. In my Black Legion and Word Bearers armies I always use Obliterators, and never Deep Strike them.

They usually die, but are very useful against almost anything you can think of. As they tend to end up quite close to your deployement Zone they are a useful addition to counter-charge Assaults against enemy units attempting to steal your Objectives. Try not to Assault with them on their own as they have a poor initiative and only a few Attacks. Use them to help your other units.

They come in very handy when SMurf players use Flank Marching vehicles in Apocalypse games.

still a thing to be concerned about is now that, oblits are not armor and most will not waste heavy weapon shots on them, leaving your "rhino rush" as the only target for AV heavy 5th edition armies.

one of the roles of heavy slot is to provide a strong tactical choice to not shoot at your transports. this is why people use vindicators and defilers, there is not much more important of a target than a pie plate flinging armored behemoth.

i recommend slowly moving into oblits, one squad of 2, or 3 if you have the points instead of an armored choice, see how it works out, then maybe advance into 2 squads.

You have a good point with the lack of armor.

The issue is I've run 3x preds for a very long time and are sick and tired of them.. They seem to be expensive for what they do. I have 6-8 terminators which have been gathering dust for years as I've not been happy with their performance in the new codex. I'm not into the small suicide DS group, which seem to be the only way to play them. With Obliterators I can convert my terminators and use them. I don't feel like buying new models for heavy support as I just invested in 2x dreads.

In my 2k army I have 2x DP's (w/ MoN), 4x rhino's, 2x dreads.. I hope it will do, though I can see your point with rhino's getting target quicker without a different heavy choice.

See with a list like that I don't see a major problem keeping your Rhinos out of target priority since you have 2 winged DPs and 2 Dreads, I would however not go with filling my entire heavies slot with Oblits. Although they usually do take priority over transports, they aren't as much of a fire magnet as say a Defiler or Vindicator, so I would probably run 2 of either of those, then a squad of 3 Oblits, test the waters with that, see how opponents handle the Oblits and go from there.

I second Ghost's sentiment on oblits not being a fire magnet. I VERY rarely have them get shot up unless they are the only target available. One of the few times I have had my oblits shot was against a tau suit list when he was launching rail cannons all over the place, other than that though, they become a target of opportunity.

Continuing with Ghost's post, oblits can indeed be fire magnets that attract enemy tank busting weaponry. Once you consider how easily oblits fall to las cannons, they become strong candidates when, let's say, compared with las preds, which often repel las shots.

If a chaos list fields both pred and obltis, it actually makes sense for our opponents to focus on the oblits, since the chance of destroying them is more likely than even getting a "weapon destroyed" result against the front armor of a pred.

They look equally as desirable beside a possessed Vindicator or Defiler as they both shrug off 40% of the dmg table. Pretty much on their own they don't seem as menacing as when they're partnered up with a harder to kill vehicle. For this reason, when I do field Oblits I usually do so with a single squad of 3 and partner them up with Defilers, my weapon of choice.

a tactic i like to employ with oblits is a kind of first strike one. you hide them behind something big enough (terrain is good because it can't be destroyed) that doesn't require much movement to get over or on top. if it's your turn you move them over/on top and open fire. that way you can protect your oblits from beeing shot down before dooing something.

another similar tactic is to use some piece of terrain to shield your oblits from most enemy weapons while they have line of sight to your preferred target. with the move and shoot ability you can often move them a little to adjust line of sight but still be invisible for the most guns that could harm them.
