Hello and welcome veterans of the Librarium.
Firstly few words about meself: three years into hobby, mostly spent on painting and modelling for more combat-oriented friend, thus I'm not an experienced player. I'm running a small Space Marines army, but I've played mostly friendlies up to 1000 pts. Recently moved to UK where I could finally spread my wings (and start anew).
And since I'm quite tired of SM's "awesomeness" I'd have a go for Tau, since those little blue buggers really caught my eye - and so, I'm looking forward to build at least a 2k army.
My first army list (composed entirely in Theoryhammer) is a large "base" I'd like to build up from. It's supposed to be competitive, but I'm not aiming at defeating every single opponent. Since it's still WIP mostly (first Tau Battleforce is halfway through) I'm not afraid to make any changes - small or big.

There it goes:

HQ
1. 1x Shas'O - AFP, Cyclic Ion Blaster, Shield Generator, HW Multitracker - 135 pts.
2x Shas'vre - Burst Cannon, Plasma Rifle, Targetting Array, HW Multitracker - 146 pts.
(This unit may remain in reserve and arrive at game turn 3 via DeepStrike. Specialised anti-infantry unit, aimed at placing as many shots into opponent as possible thanks to high BS)
2. 1x Shas'El - Missile Pod, Plasma Rifle, Positional Relay, HW Multitracker - 102 pts.
2x Shas'vre - Missile Pod, Plasma Rifle, Targetting Array, HW Multitracker - 164 pts.
(Universal unit #1)
Total for HQ: 547 pts (29.5%)

Troops
1. Kroot Squad - 19 Kroots, 11 Hounds, 2 Krootox - 269 pts.
(Arright, objective sitting, plus some anti-transport shots. I'm considering splitting them into two units)
2. Fire Warriors Team - 6 FW - 60 pts.
(This one is riding Pathfinders' Devilfish)
3. Fire Warriors Team - 6 FW, Devilfish, Disruption Pod - 145 pts.
Total for Troops: 474 pts (25.9%)

Elites
1. 3x Shas'Ui - Missile Pod, Plasma Rifle, Multitracker - 184 pts.
2. 3x Shas'Ui - Missile Pod, Plasma Rifle, Multitracker - 184 pts.
(universal units #2 & #3)
3. 2x Shas'Ui - TL Fusion Blaster, Multitracker - 96 pts.
(Hmmm... I'm not entirely sure if MT is needed for TL weapons. If not, I'll gladly replace it with target lock... This is a suicidal anti-AV14 or anti-artillery unit arriving via DeepStrike at game turn 2)

Total for Elites: 464 pts. (25%)

Fast Attack
1. Pathfinders Team - 4 Pathfinders, Devilfish, Disruption Pod - 133 pts.
Total for FA: 133 pts. (7.2%)

Heavy Support
1. XV-88 Broadside team leader - Adv.Stabilisation, HW Drone Cntrl., Marker Drone - 115 pts.
2. XV-88 Broadside team leader - Adv.Stabilisation, HW Drone Cntrl., Marker Drone - 115 pts.
Total for HS: 230 pts. (12.4%)

GRAND TOTAL: 1848 pts.

Sssooo... How do you reckon? Is this list plausible?

This list is plausible. Some quick notes:
First off, you don't need multi-trackers for twinlinked weapons, so you can go with something else. I would recommend targetting arrays for added Ballistic Skill.

Maybe get rid of your 2nd HQ, and your krootox in the kroot squad, make your Broadsides a team, with the Team leader with a Hard-wired targetlock, and Shield drones instead of marker drones. Use the extra points to get at least one piranha, and then a Hammerhead.

Other than these few points, greata list for a beginner!

Thanks, I'm trying to learn from the beast... I mean, best. ;)

As for your comments:
- I might actually get rid of 2nd HQ choice and swap it for Hammerhead w/ railgun or at least fire those bodyguards. Shas'El might then boost one of other Crisis teams.
- I'm not fond of Piranhas. I know - they are a perfect board control units, made especially for dying for the Greater Good, but... they simply do not lay flat with me. I can't see a single good point in those little skimmers - AV10, Open-Topped, weapons range so small that I'll have to literally bump to the enemy to make them work, each is worth 2 KP's... I may prox them in a few battles to come to see how they fare, but right now I'm leaning towards "NO".
- What's wrong with the Krootox? They pack quite a punch in mélee (count as having a relic blade for my maths) and two S7 shots at 12" (one at 48"): perfect for opening those light transports that were not taken out earlier. Hmm... I'm considering splitting Kroot into two units:
1. Kroot Squad - 10 Kroots, 2 Krootox
2. Kroot Squad - 10 Kroots, 10 Hounds
First one would be the "outer" layer of bubblewrap, second - "inner" layer. They may have rubbish BS but it's still 10 S4 shots at 12", plus 2 S7 that would hit.

Well, on krootox, they are just something that most people don't use, as they take away the infiltrate rule, and are more points. Most people use kroot as a cheap throw-away unit, so thats why most people don't recommend them. But I like your idea of only using the kroot as two bubble layers. I might try this out myself. Tip, though, put the squad with the krootoxes inside of he other. That way you get more of those shots off, and they will still be there for assaulting if you need them to. squad
