Some oddball questions for the experts

Howdy all,

Well, here's a few weird questions that have popped up recently and I hope someone can either answer them or we can get a good consensus on them. So here they are:

1) What is the armor save of Settra the Imperishable's chariot? It says the chariot is treated as a normal scythed chariot, see the rulebook. The rulebook says see the army lists. The light chariot is a 5+ armor save, I'd like to think something called the Chariot of the Gods has a better armor save. (Yes I know it gets a 4+ ward save from Settra's hat, but it's a odd little oversight)

The local GW is a having a special tournament. it's a 3000 point tourny with no army restriction. Sooooooo.... I can play Settra and Khalida and liche priests all in the same army. ;-)

2a) Would Settra be the army general/heirophant, would Khalida or would I choose. I'm pretty sure Settra would be the Hierophant though, even over a liche high priest.
2b) Where would Settra cast in the hieratic hierarchy on a group that includes himself, Khalida, liche high priests and other tomb kings? Would he cast his "Thy Will Be Done" before the priests and his incantations afterwards? the "TWBD" first and skip to the end to cast just before the casket of Souls?

Thanks :)

TBH mate I wouldn't bother with Settra. He's a huge wad of points and our chariots are simply not cut out for heavy combat anymore unless you really go to town with additional characters (and you really can't if you spend over 1000 points on just two lords). If you were gonna go with lots of TG then I could maybe see some benefits... but realistically he's just gonna gimp your whole list because of his cost.

If I were playing in this then I'd just go with a Khalida list. Kit it out with a casket, IB with standard of the sands (it's actually really good at 3k in a list like this), lots of scorps, a king with wiz hat, as many SSCs as you can cram in there, some TG to hold your line and a boatload of archers (natch). This kind of list can do well even if you're not super experienced.

If you're really determined to use Settra (and you really do get to ignore all the army comp rules) then I would use him at the end of the heiratic order just before the casket. I'd use ALL his abilities & spells at that point. I'd also nominate him as the heiro since he's no slouch in combat.

So long as you make your opponent aware of your heiratic order and apply it consistently you should have no problems.

Good luck! :)

Settra is a good choice if you're going to use Chariots and Bone Giants. His weapon is yet another way to force WS1 on an opposing unit...and we all know what happens when Big Bone or an IotSE Chariot bus is attacking WS1 troops...

/harvest

If I were going to run him, and I probably wouldn't, I'd also run the Shield of Ptra on another character and get him a decent armor save. Throw them against bog standard infantry, wait for either Settra's weapon or the Shield of Ptra to proc, then slaughter them with Unstoppable Assaults! No one expects to get the beatdown in close combat against a TK list. Your opponents will probably be expecting the uber magic gunline of Undeath. Not saying it would work...I have no idea. But I can see it being all kinds of fun trying!

Hmm... thinking about UA against WS1 I just had a random thought:

Since terror automatically causes fear on a unit garrisoned inside a building the BG could give us a huge advantage in cleaning them out. The watchtower scenario can be problematic at the best of times so this could be a biggie for us.

Not tried it yet of course (and this kind of 'stroke of genius' usually falls afoul of the small print anyway), but well worth investigating methinks.

Hey,

To Vallah: Yes all forms of army composition restrictions are gone for these special mega-battles. You can play 3000 points of lords, all rares, rules such as "Settra's Army" are discounted. Just a fun mega-battle meant to highlight how asskicking your army can be. (and believe me, some tough armies get played...)

So I run 3 basic "units" One is Settra and two TK's in chariots. Using things like Armor of Destiny, Armor of Silvered Steel/Talisman of 4+ ward save to basically make them unhittable. If I get wounded it tends to come from combat res and Settra can heal that the next turn with his two incantations. It's the ultimate mudpit. Last time we had one of these mega-battles, this unit held down 40 clanrats, a full unit of skaven-slaves, a unit of plaguemonks, 3 heroes and a bunch of globediers and slowly was killing them all. Using things like Warrior's bane, Blessed Blade of Ptra and the Speak of Antarhak just makes it even more difficult for your enemy to deal with this uber group.

To Enigmatik: I like that combo idea... have to try it when I finally get some bone giants.

Cool, 3000pts and no restrictions? :D What a fun idea!

Let's see, 3000pts....

That's 35 Tomb Scorpions,
or 33 plain Screaming Skull Catapults,
or 10 Caskets.

Does the lift of army composition restrictions extend to unit sizes as well? It would be nice to take some larger units of Tomb Guard.

I really like the unstoppable assault idea! Only problem is there is the chance the shield or blade wouldn't trigger on the charge, which could leave you a little stuck. You would definately have to take the shield of Ptra. Looking at it, the shield and blade work on different audiences. A unit with high initiative (needs to be higher than 3 for the shield to be useful, as BGs Init is 3) is likely to have high Ld meaning less chance of the Blade triggering, and a low Ld unit will probably have Init 3 or less, meaning they could/will end up striking after your Bone Giant, and not trigger the shield in time... And there is always the possibility the unit will cower in fear (Fear) anyway, rendering the blade/shield redundant :p

Certainly something to try out though. I'm not sure if I'd go as far as using Settra, but it could still be feasible using the shield only if you pick targets appropriately.

If you use Smiting on the BG on the turn he charges, does the bonus attack benefit from unstoppable assault as well?

Also, Big Bone has a whopping Initiative of 1 according to my AB. Not 3, so there's less to worry about here. Pretty much everyone, save Saurus, Zombies (I think) or Miasma-debuffed units will get to go before him.

I wouldn't be so quick to discount Settra's weapon due to high enemy LD. If I remember correctly, the unit attacked takes a minus for every time the Blessed Blade hits. He has 5 ASF attacks at I4 that will be hitting on possibly re-rollable 2s in the first round of combat. It isn't LD10 that's the problem. It's the BSB that allows re-rolls since most folks are running Wizard Lords with LD9 (although at 3K this becomes a moot point). So, at best, you're looking at re-rollable tests on LD4-8, with the average being around 6. Those aren't terrible odds except against Lizardmen due to Cold-Blooded.

I still probably wouldn't run him except for fun, but I think his weapon is a bit more dangerous that people give it credit for in this particular context. Stacking Settra and the Shield of Ptra in the same unit pretty much ensures that you have both bases covered in any event.
