Hey guys. I'm posting this for a friend of mine, she's very interested in playing Tyranids and considering getting some for Christmas. So, she borrowed a copy of a Codex and wrote out this little 500 Point list. I was able to help her with the "mechanics" (What does Rending Mean, What does Poisoned Mean, etc.) but I have no clue if her list is a good one or not. So, here it is. C&C is very welcome and I will pass all advice upon to her. Thanks!
Tyranid Prime
+ Scything Talons - Devourer
+ Toxin Sacs
+ Regeneration
Termagant x 20
+ Spinefists
Hormagaunt x 15
+ Toxin Sacs
Zoanthrope
Genestealer x 5
+ Scything Talons
I'm sure this will be followed by much better advice, but here goes! First off, not too shabby for a first-time list-- it gets all the basics covered, even anti-tank! That said, just a word on loadouts and unit selection.
- At that points level three Troops is plenty. If she drops one troop she'll have points to add more models to other units or pick up an unused slot.
- One Zoanthrope will be very lonely by itself, not to mention tired of walking if it doesn't have a pod to drop in with. If she really likes Zoeys she can use the points from dropping a troop choice to get some more and a pod for them. Otherwise, I'd take a unit of two Hive Guard, or maybe even three if you know you'll have to deal with pesky vehicles even at that point level.
- Hormagaunts are perfect with toxin sacs, always use them this way. I barely see anyone ever put Talons on Genestealers-- with their WS, they barely seem to need them. They are usually best with Toxins as well instead. Spinefists are also a very uncommon loadout for the Termagants-- their default Fleshborers are usually fine.
- Lastly, not sure about the Toxins and Regen on the Prime. He may be better off with a Deathspitter instead too.

Are you kidding me? I would not go a game without Scything Talons, and I know plenty of 'nid players who do. Re-rolls every combat phase of 1 is an awesome bonus. And I would replace the Toxin Sacs with Adrenal Glands too.
I'm not saying having it like you have it is bad, its just that in the games I have played, what I had seems to fare better generally.
Fufufufu, my bad then. Now that I think on it, the last time I was advised away from Scything Talons, it was most probably to bump down the exorbitant cost of the MASSIVE horde of 'stealers I had in that list. At this game size Talons would probably be a great force multiplier at a-- heheh-- steal. Still iffy about the Glands though-- reason being that they only kick in when the 'stealers themselves charge, and even then they have stupid high Initiative as it is, and their Rending makes a higher Strength seem like unnecessary salt on the wound.
I may try it at some point just to see what you saw. Otherwise, thanks for backing up pretty much all my other advice; nice to know I'm learning a bit.
