Dragon's not at the top of the food chain anymore ?

With the influx of new and somewhat awesome big monsters being introduced I'm just wondering if anyone else things that our dragons are losing a bit of luster.

Now I'll admit that I don't get a chance to play as often as I used to and the few times that I used a dragon was fun but I was never overly impressed by what they could dish out. As I remember there rules I feel like the only thing they have that is a one up to the new monstrous creatures is flight ( I may be wrong if any of the new ones to come fly) aside from that they are certainly killy and are able to absorb some damage, but come on these are dragons were talking about. Dragons are supposed to be the mythical top monster, being both smart, able to tear other monsters to pieces, but now it seems the new monsters are geared to be able to kill dragons like they are just another infantry troop.

I may be wrong and I'm not sure if a thread like this has been posted already but I figured it's a bad topic and I'm curious as to how others feel about this.

I've only been away from the Fantasy side of the hobby ( working on Blood Angel Army for some variation in painting) but I'm beginning to question the effectiveness of our army in comparison to the updated, and soon to be updated, armies.

Help renew this straying High Elf General faith in his army ( before he strays to something new and shiny).

No, you are correct. Dragon's are still quite powerful in their own rights, but their so damn expensive against other armies monsters. The new TK monster, HPA's, Hydra's, Gorgons, etc... all so much cheaper. And you don't have to put a 200+ point character on top of them. I think when you compaire destructive ability to point cost, we're getting the shaft pretty hard.

But, with this trend, I expect to see something real nice with the next army book.

Let's hope your right about dragons becoming more competitive in the next army book Djones. There is not a single thing that seems overly effective or affordable about our monsterous creatures in comparison to most other armies, especially the newer monsters. Even the scales of the new monsters are over the top in comparison to the new monsters such as the O&G's araknarok spider, or the new Tomb Kings Sphinx variations, Don't get me wrong, I love the plastic dragon model but these new ones are a whole class apart.

It's unfortunate that they had to create the new griffon model when the updated our army, though I am a fan of the model as well as the rest of our new plastics, it may have been more suitable to upscale the dragon in preparation for a new improved entry in the next army book.

I just find it hard to believe that GW didn't know that they were planning to introduce Warhammer to an influx of monsters, unless they were just hoping we can cope with white lions, bolt throwers, and magic to dismantle this new generation of monsters.

I think you nailed it. Dragons are just too expensive for the points that most games are played at. As you said archmages are just too good to give up for a well equipped prince and nobles can hold there own with asf anyways. That and I do not loose any sleep over our rare choices as most of my points go into our special anyways. Granted a cheap monster might be nice but you know that anytime we get anything u are going to hear someone cry cheese.

Hands down, I'll take my dragons over Shelob or the Sphinx. The statlines between the two might not seem that skewed, but I've already watched Flaming-Sword Swordmasters take down that Spider in one round of combat, and I've expecting the same with the Sphinx. I've never been a fan of the huge and expensive models, and I hope that they don't keep pushing them down our throats in Fantasy. There are some balance issues that I'd like to see corrected with the HE (namely, we could use something that will provide toughness and a **** armor save) but otherwise our Elves are a solid book.
The last thing that I want to see though, are more lions. The Spider wasn't that big a deal in the O&G book, and now you'd think they worship the things. Hopefully we'll just get some massive Dragon with a ton of wounds. They keep showing picture of 'The Great Fire Dragon' model (about the size of 4 chariot bases iIrc) instead of the current Dragons, so maybe they plan on matching the stats to the scale and giving us something a little more imposing.

Good luck moving something that big around, not to mention every cannon in a 5 table radius is going to take a shot at it. A large expensive single model is just too big of a risk in 8th. I would rather have a block of our elite and make my opponent kill them all to get any points.

Ï still think dragons have a shot against most things out there in CC. Your 200+ character and his dragon coupled with a good ol thunderstomp will see you get a few well needed combat ress. A high elf lord on a star dragon will give anyone pause when you plump it down on the table since its going to be hard to kill it off.
But ya if you go against cannons you may as well not bring your dragon, or any monster, unless you can take em out on turn one. Cannons = monster killers. Even the Sphynx "only" has T8. Cannons still wound the buggers on 2+. THe reason, in my mind, why dragons could have trouble against the sphynx is that they wound it on 6's (Star dragon wounds on 5's though) Still, i would class dragons to still be up there in the running for scariest monsters running around. The only difference now is that they have some true competition for the title of Top Badass.

Do you mean only the lord Choice dragon? cause i've seen alot of fun matches played with Dragon Mages, running around magicking things. Two dragons in the same army, one a solid lord the other a Dragon Mage of Saphery, very good. He'd use them as pincers, hitting a unit each time and going for terror checks and thunderstomp, then back them up with some of the nifty fire magic

DragonMages are a curious part of our book now. The mage on top is in a bad way, because everyone and their cousin is blazing away at the dragon, and he has no armor. The dragon itself is pretty weak (handgun fire has been known to drop mine in the past) but in combat, a dragon's a dragon. You're going to get 1 good round of Attacks, 2D6 S2 breath, and D6 stomps. Flaming Sword can help. Having the Lore of Life on a caster with the ability to choose Throne and Regrowth, and then having Teclis with Beasts can make the DMage pretty deadly (Stone Skin, Wild Form, Regrowth) but that's about it.
A L2 DMage with the SilverWand can be pretty fun though, since you can start off with a light Fireball, and then adding D3's to finish off the regiment and draw out dice. He essentially adds 3D6+2D3 to your Power pool.

You shouldn't use Dragons against other monsters. We have infantry that can deal with stuff like that- nothing's better at killing Hydras than White Lions or Swordmasters with the Banner of Eternal Flame. Dragons need their Stomp, which is why you should toss them in against infantry. They can keep other big flying brutes at bay, but honestly, I've always used mine to go after flank and rear charges, and enemy flankers.
