Can someone tell me if this is a viable tactic? Load out a decent combat hero and charge him into an enemy block of troops targeting the enemy character in that block , one round of combat against the enemy hero, hopefully get a wound or maybe even two, lose combat due to CR and then fall back?

I think I understand what you're imply and trying to do, but I don't think you understand how it's wrong. Characters can't ride warhawks, the can ride Eagles, and while a character on an eagle is good at hunting characters, he's likely to get run down in combat. Eagles, unlike War hawk Riders, don't have the hit and run rule, so they can still be run down after loosing an assault.

That being said, it is still very good at killing enemy characters. Exceptionally good, I would argue. This is how I'd do it:

179
Noble
Light Armor, Shield
Eagle
Spear of Twilight
Helm of the Hunt

That gives you 4 S5 WS/I7 Attacks with killing blow on the charge, plus the eagle and it's stomp attacks. If you wanted, you could swap the spear for a non magical one and take a Stone of Crystal Mere for a little more survivability. Either way, he's T4 with 3 wounds and a 4+ save.

if the enemy unit champ issues a challange you'd be kinda screwed. with no rank to hide in, you'd have to accept. You kill the champion, but dont get enough combat res to stick around. then you (probably) flee and (might) get run down.

ultimately, its a very risky tactic, and most good players would be able to side step it easily. Also, the above build would only be T3 with 3 wounds. You still use the toughness of the rider, even though you do get the wounds of the mount. it would also be a 3+ save (light armor, shield, helm, mounted)

Ah yes, my bad. Most of the monstrous mounts I've dealt with have always had the same T as the rider anyway, so it never really came up. Also good catch on the 3+. I forgot about the helm.

Anyway, if they issue a challenge with the champ, it's not always a loss on your part. Most champs only have 1 wound and 2 attacks. You can get a +4 if things go well (charge +3 over kill), and this kind of character isn't one that's going to be flying into a horde all alone. Careful planning could net you something nice. For example, if you double charge and flank him with a few trees/Wild Riders, all of the sudden they're disrupted and don't have any ranks. Also, for this set up, a Sword of Anti-heroes is another option for the same points. It depends on if you want that killing blow or another extra attack. You can make a pretty decent alter hero with that set up, actually. Anti-heroes, Helm of the Hunt, Armor/Shield, and Alter would give you 6 S4 attacks on the charge if you plow him into a character, but alters are hard to protect, especially with only 2 wounds.

It's a shame Lords are taken up by Wizards because an assassin highborn is pretty dangerous. The Spirit Sword is a gamble, but it is very powerful. However, it's over 50 points, so only a lord can take it. A Lord with Spirit Sword, Netlings, Helm of the Hunt, Light Armor and a Shield mounted on an eagle is 301 points, which generally means you don't have a high level caster.
