Just to say, I'm a bit disappointed that, having got to page 36 of White Dwarf, I'm looking at my fifth and sixth full-page articles with "Sample Army Lists" written into them. I don't think this magazine has ever felt so lazy.

:(

(That said, can't wait for the hardback Vampire Counts army book. Will be snapping that up pronto!)

I haven't bought a WD in over 10 years. Although for 6 of those years I was getting them free but.......... my point stands.

What are people thoughts on the new VC? Ethereal Cav should upset a few people. My 3k Marauder list doesn't have any magical attacks in it.......... I think that may have to change!!!

I'm waiting to see how widespread the Ethereal rule is in the army book. If it's only on smallish units, then you can still carry combat using static resolution. I'm excited about the book, though. Vampire Counts are one of my favourite four armies in Fantasy.

We can't win games through static combat res. At most, with Warriors, we're getting 2 ranks a standard and charging.... and there ain't much chance charging cav. So that's +3.

I'm not saying "Egads! To the hills!". I'm just realising that I personally would struggle no end against a force with a lot of Ethereal nasties in it. It does give VC's a viable unit to counter unit blenders like Warriors though..... We just need to ram Knights or Trolls down their Throats.

Fairly certain the only new thing that is Ethereal are the Hex Wraiths. Cairn wraiths, Banshees, and the Black Coach (likely be changed though) are probably going to be kicking around still to annoy people. Despite the paint job the Coven of Thrones/Mortis Engine is not ethereal. So it's unlikely to be worse than it already is, and I could use and excuse to field my knights.

Yeah I have been running Nurgle knights with banner of rage, as is a pretty common build, and if you take those bad boys you won't have to worry about ethereal nonsense.

Can you Rune Organ guns? Been ages since I've played them. Most Dwarf Cannons sport the rune of fire and/or the Rune of reloading so will have magical attacks. Still, a 4+ Ward save will take the worst of the brunt off.

............ I'm actually starting to Consider the Lore of Fire on my Sorcerers. The sword of Rhuin is pretty sweet and those Direct damage spells will help thin those Ethereal beasties down a tad.

Can't rune an Organ Gun. Can only rune the special war machines, not the rare one.
Dwarves don't have an easy answer to ethereal. Best you could do I suppose is hope they get within 12" and use grapeshot with a runed cannon.

Having read an extract of the Vampire Counts book the Coven of thrones is bnot etheral. You have to take a weird leadership test which involves the attacker and the rider of coven of thrones rolling a D6 and adding their LD with the differnce in scores causing a modifier to the attackers stats.

regarding hexwraiths they are extremely expensive points wise (chaos knight expensive) and they inflict automatic S5 hits with no armour saves for every unit that they move through but do not have to engage. This is not nice for chaos since we have small elite units and no real counter for them.

I usually run a Sorc Shadow lord and a Book BSB. I used to make the book guy death for sniping, but more and more I find myself using fire on him. Fireball is such a versatile magic missile, and perfect for dinging ethereals, or killing small units of light cav that try to speed bump us.

I hated the old Vamps, they were a real tough match-up for me as there is little to counter the crazy # of dice they would 1shot you with, just hope for the best with the rolls. To even have a chance to win i would have to kit my list just for them, which wasn't such a risk as 1/2 to 3/4 of people played vampires. They were so popular because people:

A) Loved to win
B) Loved their fluff
C) Love Twilight
D) Loved their Playstyle
E) Any/all of the above

When the new edition came out, they weren't scarey anymore, and they dropped out almost completely, as players now had an excuse to:

A) Start that new army they always wanted to try
B) Have a reason to go back to the other army they were playing
C) used their skeletons for TK army as their book got updated

They can still be played but their style has shifted. With their new rules, I'm excited to see what they will do with the army to bring back their former glory, wile maintaining the standard of consistency with casters rules in the magic phase. If they can pull that off then I'll be happy to see them against me on the battlefield. It feels like so long since i've seen them out that i am almost missing them . . . .

I can't believe yo put twilight in there. What about the cool skeleton fight seen in Jason and the Argonauts????? Ok, the rest of the film is tosh but that fight scene is still awesome.

I'm starting to like the idea of fire against them but that means tailoring. I'm not sure I want to chuck Fire into an all comers list, even on a low level support sorcerer. Maybe a Magic weapon wielding Disc Exalted would suffice. Hmmm........

Using Fire is hardly tailoring to Vampire Counts. Surely there are plenty of units that one extra ranged flaming attack will help against, including our very own Trolls. If you're concerned that it's tailoring, though, why not just take Tzeentch for Flickering Fire?

Yeah fire is hardly tailoring. It's a great magic missile with 3 variants, great for dealing some ranged damage where we need it. And if you roll and get something like flamecage, or flaming sword, well then, even better. It works against any nasty with regen (HPA, hydra, etc), or anything that's meant to be mobile and uses its special rules to avoid damage (skirmishers, light cav). It is one of the best all-comers lores in the game.
