The situation:

A long abandoned human colony world (and even farther back a forgotten eldar world).

It is midwinter, drifts of snow cover everything, including many small hills and mutated pines. An abandoned science outpost disguised as a human farmhouse occupies my left side of the table. The obvious subject of it's study: some eldar ruins occupying the center of the table. An overrun fortress to my far right side represents the humans last stand here. The devestation is obvious, the victor is not. Across the table from the blasted fortress lie some building ruins, lost in time is the purpose of these buildings but their tactical importance in that final defense of this world was never in doubt. Once they were captured they provided the launching point for the fortresses eradication. I would do well not to ignore their significance.

The combatants:

Me:

A Slanneshi Daemon Prince: w/d stature, d/ flight, d/ essence d/ aura, and a great weapon.

3 Obliterators

8 chaos marines w/ccw and bp w/ aspiring champ w/ power weapon w/ Undivided mark and furious charge cruising in a Rhino w/ smoke.

8 chaos marines w/ ccw and bp w/ aspiring champ w/ power fist w/ Undivided mark and furious charge cruising in a Rhino w/ smoke.

7 chaos marines 5 w/ bolters 2 w/ plasma guns on foot.

6 Havocs w/ 3 heavy bolters and 3 bolters

6 Havocs 1/ autocannon, 1/ lascannon, 2/ rocket launchers

Defiler w/ reaper autocannon, heavy flamer, battlecannon, mutated hull, indirect fire and smoke.

Him:

Nightbringer (this models power is legendary!)

Monolith (this combination is enough to make a lesser man wet himself! I wimper quietly on the inside!)

1 Lt. type guy carrying a ressurection orb

1 heavy destroyer

3 destroyers

5 elites with gauss rifles or cannons

12 or 15 warriors.

12 or 15 warriors.

He chooses to deepstrike the monolith.

When last I faced this general he slaughtered me in 4 rounds at 1850 points. I have learned from my mistakes.
There is a giant hole in his army list, he has underestimated me as well, if I am quick I can exploit this. If I take too long.....

Setting up:

The defiler will not be denied, it demands to redefend the fortress. I squabbled with the Daemon Prince about this but he said he had a plan(hehe) the lascannon havoc squad and the obliterators take the center hills directly across from the eldar ruins with the prince beside them. These units are flanked on both side by a rhino squad. On the strong right side of the outpost my heavy bolter havocs set up and on the weakside all alone I place my plasma gun team. They have their orders!

Directly opposite the Defiler and covered by the building ruins is the heavy destroyer flanking it are the 3 destroyers. On his side of the table is another large hillside directly opposite the eldar ruins. he places a squad of warriors here and to their right flank are the elites followed by the Leuitenent with orb. Flanking His right is the other squad of warriors. The Nightbringer has taken the bait. He sets up directly across from my plasma squad with smirk on his face. The jaws of the trap are open...

Turn 1:

By the grace of Slannesh I go first.

Both rhinos race forward 12" flanking both sides of the eldar ruins and pop their smoke, the Daemon Prince is flying behind them but sets up on my front side of the ruins ready to go around either way. The plasma squad runs right toward the Nightbringer. They have their orders.
The Defiler unleashes a screaming torrent of death-filled hatred at the destroyers, the plate covers them all with a direct hit and 1 of them doesn't come back! The right flank rhino fires at the remaining 2 destroyers to no effect. The left flank rhino misses firing at the elite squad. The obliterators bathe the elites in incandescent lascannon fire and 2 fall, they aren't coming back. The lascannon havoc team draws a bead on the Nightbringer and wounds him 5 times! But he saves 4 of them! It was too good to be true anyway! The heavy bolter havocs target the warriors opposite them and bring down 5, 3 won't be coming back. The plasma team adds its firepower into that warrior squad and 1 more is wounded and destroyed!

The Nightbringer races toward my plasma squad, he thinks I have erred (good). The heavy destroyer comes out of hiding and the 2 destroyers move in front of it to flank my rhino. The warriors in the hills don't move but the elites and the wounded squad move towards my other rhino. My Defiler screams his defiance as the heavy destroyer lascannon plays harmlessly across the front mutated armor and merely enrages the deamon within. The destroyers and the hilltop warriors target my right flank rhino and it explodes! Bits of rhino and 2 of my marines scatter across the battlefield but the other 7 crawl out unscathed with hate in their hearts and murder in their minds! The elites and the wounded warrior squad target my left flank rhino, and to my dismay its armor proves unworthy and it vomits forth debris and chaos warriors in a violent explosion that leaves a small smoking crater. To a man, the chaos marines shake it off and grin their evil grins as the specter of their deaths is forced to wait still longer for their souls! The Nightbringer burns a hole in my Daemon Prince with his lascannon but that's what I expected. Thats what d/ essence is for!

Turn 2:

Now on foot, the right flank chaos marine squad heads for the 2 destroyers. Hmm, out of charge range. The left flank chaos marines head for the elites and the wounded warrior squad with the Deamon Prince hot on their tails. The plasma squad heads for the Nightbringer. They have their orders!
The Defiler sets his plate on the hilltop warriors but in his rage it deviates and misses entirely. The obliterators target the destroyers with their autocannons and another goes down, he doesn't get back up. The lascannon havocs target the elites and destroy them all, for good! the plasma team fires at the Nightbringer but fails to score. The heavy bolter havocs seeing that their brethren face imminent doom fire nine heavy bolter shots at the Nightbringer without any realistic hope of changing their fate. Unbelievably all nine hit and 5 actually wound, It looks like yahtzee with all those 6's sitting there! He still saves 3 of them but the Necron General is no longer smirking. His Nightbringer is down to 2 wounds left and it's just the end of my round 2!

The Monolith bursts into existence between my havocs and obliterators, and the Deamon Prince and his squad of marines. The Prince and marine squad are cut off from anymore direct fire support! The Nightbringer can only do what he must to save himself, he races towards the relative safety of hand to hand with my plasma team. They have their orders! The remaining destroyer flanks my defiler to escape hand to hand with my chaos marines. The Monolith places its pie plate over my lascannon havocs, but it deviates and only kills the lascannon. The Nightbringer misses! The heavy destroyer misses! The destroyer misses! The hilltop warriors fire desperately into my right flank chaos marines and 2 more fall. The wounded warrior squad fires into my left flank squad and cause seven wounds. I know we are at the crux of the game as I make all seven armor saves! The Nightbringer charges the plasma squad and 3 die outright but the other 4 remain. Locking him in combat and effectively disabling him for now. There is still work to be done.

Turn 3:

The right flank marines stand fast at the bottom of the hilltop. The left flank marines head for the wounded warriors. The Daemon Prince heads for the Necron Lt.

The Defiler, seething over a lost opportunity last round makes good this time with a direct hit on the hilltop warriors wounding 7 and sending 5 to their final oblivion!
The right flank marines fire point blank rapid fire with their pistols and drop 6 more, 4 won't be coming back! The obliterators fire their lascannons at the Monolith and score! It won't be firing any weapons next turn! The heavy bolter havoc squad fires at the wounded warrior squad causing 5 wounds, 1 won't be coming back. The other havoc squad eradicates the heavy destroyer with dead on rocket fire! The Nightbringer finishes off my plasma squad (they did their jobs well!) and sweeps towards the heavy bolter squad. My Daemon Prince slaughters the Necron Lt. and sweeps towards the remains of the hilltop warriors.
The left flank chaos warriors have furiously charged the wounded warrior squad and done 5 wounds, 3 won't be coming back the aspiring champ adds 2 power weapon kills and the warriors break! The Necron General rolls a 10 to escape.. not to be denied my chaos warriors roll an 11 and catch and slaughter every last one of them...

The Necrons Phase Out!

Blood, acrid smoke and melted snow mark the landscape. In hours fresh snow will cover the scars of battle and in weeks there will be nothing left to show that any recent activities took place here. The Daemon Prince has recovered the object of Slannesh's attention and peace once more settles over a long forgotten world.

Nice list on your part, I especially like the use of the plasma squad as bait, very smart. I wouldn't play his list for money though. Nightbringer and a monolith combined with that few warriors/flayed ones and he deserves the phase out. His nightbringer did what? 1 wound to your lord and killed 3 or 4 marines...that's under 200 points worth of damage. And just so you know, the Monolith will fire it's ordnance EVERY turn even stunned/shaken/weapon destroyed.

Thanks. I thought bringing both the Nightbringer and a Monolith in a 1500 point game was a giant point sink. I'm not sure but don't they add up to close to one third of the points? I could never justify that many points for only 2 models in that low a point game. I knew I had an awesome opportunity for a quick victory when he chose to deepstrike the Monolith. What good is it if it isn't on the board? And when it did show up it only killed one lascannon marine! He told me about that special rule for the Monolith and I forgot to add that, thanks. He could have controlled the game from the outset if he had set the Nightbringer in the middle of the table and headed towards the rhinos, and set the Monolith out for turn 1. My tactics would have been much different, and maybe not even very effective.

Thanks to everyone who responded and/or read this. I hope you enjoyed the battle as much as I did. :)

If he had been smart he would have turned the nightbringer into a 20 man squad of warriors and kept the monolith in deepstrike. Deepstrike the monolith, everything within 12" gets d6 shots at str5 and then the warriors pop out and unload into anything troublesome within 24" (moving out of a monolith counts as a stationary vehicle, even if it has just deepstriked). That could have very easily turned the tide in his favor. A nightbringer is a waste of points against anything but nids as far as I can tell. But against nids he's your best friend.

Nightbringer plus Monolith is 595 points, or 40% of his entire list.

against necrons combat drugs are not as effective as against other troops since the extra I is useless, ignoring the first wound might be nice but usually where there's one there's six or seven if you're in CC with something meant to be in CC and the str gives a max of a 16.7 additional percentage to wound. So basically you would be paying 25 points for an additional attack and str....spiky bits and mutation would be better in my opinion.
