Since the new tyranid figures aren't coming out until April/May, I'm going to hold off on my tyranid and genestealer cult purchases until then. For the time being, however, I'd like to field a second army, (my bugs are in various states of unassembly), so I'm going to make a space marine chapter themed after my poodle. Since I'm using all the rules for ravenguard, however, I'm going to use shrike (renamed) and his awesome wing... they fit the fluff of a poodle-themed death squad.

Edit: I've revised the list... I want the three drop pods.

Blessed Be the Warriors
No Mercy, No Respite
Flesh over Steel

HQ:

Shrike, 175
w/ Shrike’s Wing of 7, 357

Elite:

Assault Marines, Veteran Sargent, Plasma Pistol, Powerfist 7 Marines w/ 2 plasma pistol, meltabombs, furious charge - 266

Assault Marines, Veteran Sargent, Plasma Pistol, Powefist, 7 Marines w/ 2 plasma pistols, meltabombs, furious charge - 266

Troops:

Tactical Squad - Veteran Sargent w/ powerfist, plasma pistol, 7 marines, multimelta, meltagun, frag grenades, furious charge- 212

Tactical Squad- Veteran Sargent w/ powerfist, plasma pistol, 7 marines, multimelta, meltagun, frag grenades, furious charge- 212

Fast Attack:

Drop Pod –50 (w/ deathwind)

Drop Pod –50 (w/ deathwind)

Drop Pod- 50 (w/ deathwind)

Would this do poorly in comp? I understand that shrike is nasty, but I do have 43 percent troops…

Fast Attack:

Drop Pod w/ deathwind- (30)

Drop Pod w/ deathwind- (30)

Drop Pod w/ deathwind- (30)

Model Count: 54 - should I drop the drop pods? Would it be better if I made the tac squads 6 each and stuck them in razorbacks instead? Then I'd give them multimeltas and meltaguns, and perhaps drop furious charge. Or, I could make one an assault squad of 10 and the other two into shooty anti-tank squads.

Fluff wise don't Raven Guard have a lot of scouts? I thought I read that in the old index astartes.

Other than that, you could get some much more effective fast attack choices. Take out the drop pods and get some landspeeders in there. Even one tornado speeder can do a lot of damage.

Take the multi meltas out of the tac squads. Leave one maybe, but get something longer ranged. For anti-vehicle work get melta guns instead, since you can move and shoot them. The plasma weapons that come in the blister packs with the melta guns can be used againt armies with not as many vehicles. Only use flamers against nids and orks, for the most part. Its not worth it against any army that gets an armour save against it.

Other than the couple of comments above, I like the list.

They're not ravenguard... they just use the rules/special characters for ravenguard. Their fluff is my own creation.

I don't see any reason there would be a problem with this... it's like my other army, a genestealer cult with lost and damned rules... it would play the same if they were painted blue, black, white, or polka dotted... if it makes my opponent feel better, he can think to himself that they're ravenguard, since it makes no difference to the gameplay.

Still, is the second list, the one with the razorbacks, footsloggers, and speeders, any good?

At any rate, I'd rather keep the drop pods- then I can keep the meltaguns, (part of the theme, and only made useless by your suggestion to remove them). It also lets me keep the tactical squads assault-y.

Any other comments? Would this be tourney competitive?

It could work in a tournament if played properly. I'd suggest playing a few games with it first, either at your local GW or with friends. Get a feel for it, see if you need to make any changes.

On a side note, in tournament play, don't you have to play ravenguard to use their special rules and characters?

I got nitpicked for that once, just want to make sure the same doesn't happen to you.

To use Shrike or the Raven Guard rules (are there any, I thought that it was just compulsory traits) you must be playing as Raven Guard. You might get away with using Shrikes rules in a non-RG army in a friendly game, but a tourney or store will seriously ping you if you try.

Also, your list would need some reworking if you were to use it as RG. There are no scouts, which the RG use a great deal (suggest 2+ squads)[{EDIT: My mistake, looked in the wrong place} there are no assault squads (except for Shrikes retinue), which should be at least two of your fast attack slots, probably 3].

You might also want to check the GW FAQ page if you decide to use RG. There was a FAQ (can't remember which one) which said that Drop Pods in a RG army can use the same slot as the DSing unit (in some circumstances).

There are two assault squads in addition to shrike and his retinue... I have 24 jump-packers, if you read the list. As far as scouts, I don't want to use any, although I suppose I could... but I don't like the models much, they're complicated to paint, and they're too expensive. It's a ravenguard list with a different paint-job - I don't see what the problem is.

I spoke to the redshirts at the gw store - they said that if I use the ravenguard rules and drawbacks, I could use shrike -
