I've got a massive space marine army (3400pts) and a dark eldar/harlequin army that is midway through complete.

But I want something more. I want a really unusual army something thats really odd but follows fluff. Or armies that few players play.

Got any ideas? I was toying with the ork clan that has lots of mega armor or a tzeenth army as no one seems to play those guys, but I'm not really sure. Or maybe even a choas army in pre-heresy style. Although that may come out as to space marine like.

Anyone got any goofy ideas?

man now thats gonna be tough.
lets see now..
everyone plays chaos, space marines, tau, imperial gaurd, orks, deamon hunters, and eldar. plus you already have a dark eldar army so that wittles the choices down even more. lets see, we got witch hunters, tyranids, and necrons.

witch hunters- not the best army against shooty players, fair in cc
necrons- very little diversity, only one vehicle, costly retreat rule
tyranids- very advanced army, main focus is cc, large diversity, very annoying synapse rule.

all in all id say go with the nids, i dont play them but if i had to choose one then they would be it... 8)

well... i can only think of one at the moment that you haven't used. try LatD. that is lots of grotesue people with little firepower (possibly) and little combat (again, possibly) but bucketloads of guys. it will be something completely new! plus you can work on your conversion and painting. it really is the collector's army!

Hmmmz LotD I dunno. Aren't they just totally chaos guys? Like all cultists or something?

I'll take any ideas you have. No matter how loopy. Except really dumb stuff like CC guard.

I want something CRAZY!!! 8)

Actually, a lot of people um...play Tyranids...and Necrons, too...Witch Hunters and Sisters of Battle seem to be lacking a LOT of attention, in my opinion. Could always go their way.

Then there's always an "elite" Space Marine army, though people like those so much (duh, they're Space Marines) so they're used a lot. One idea is a Kroot Mercenary Force which can be found in Chapter Approved 2004. They'd be very difficult to use, but they would be extremely fun and their signature adaptations will give you some very fun conversions (if you're into converting, that is).

i know many people play nids, but how many play them competently? i mean like the guy living down the street from me has a real good nid army, and hes only at 1500 points. for the last five years with no need to alter his fighting style..

I don't really want to start tyranids as they have a new codex soon.

Do that many people really play orks? I thought they were quite rare....

I'm asking to much? :hmm: Is what I'm looking for even out there?

shouldn't be. they may be around where you are, but at our residential GW, you be lucky to find anyone that doesn't have a marine army. only the ones invited to vet nights have got anything different, me included.

now thats is unique, im going to make one tommorow... 8) (no joke)

Heheh. Sounds like the Genestealer I painted for my brother where I painted him wearing someone's jeans.

You should make a Kroot Mercenary army, and make them look all rag tag and tough. You could make one look like Boba Fett. That would be sweet.

well, i wouldn't suggest starting nids right now. though if you do decide on nids it'll give you plenty of time before the new codex is released to finish dark eldar...

anyway, i would suggest kroot mercenaries, they're fun and if you're willing to shell out you can have some really cool forgeworld Knarlock models, never seen those before and the regular knarlocks look great.

i never liked the look of LatD, so personally i wouldn't go there (but you might like them).

orks are really fun to play, and IMO there's not enough ork players out there. orks are really great and have lots of special clans, so i would suggest picking one of the obscure ones.

Thanks for all the great suggestions guys!

Well now I'm torn between kroot and orks.

Whats some of the advantages to the krooty? What kinds of ork clans are there? Whats an unusual one?

Kroot, well, advantages are: very very few people play them (most likely less than DE). They have superbly cool units, and you can take a "Signature Adaptation." Can add to leadership, or Toughness, or Initiative.

They have cavalry, infiltrating, scout snipers. Basically, the cavalry can move 6" + d6" (Fleet of Hoof, yes?) pregame. Then first round can move again, and on top of that they have sniper riflers. Yes, and they're infiltrators.

You have "jump pack" units in the Vulture Kindred. You have High Toughness killers, though your ownly real tank hunters will have to be your HQ.

It also gives you the opportunity to convert as much as anyone would dream. Kroot Warriors boxed sets, you get 16 for $30 (when a lot of armies you get 10 or so). DE I believe you also get 16, so you'd be used to it.

Interesting. I have gotton my filty little hands on a kroot codex and flipped through it a bit. Doesn't look like alot of variation. I can invsion alot of evisators and lots of vultures in most armies.

Not much unit variation.

why not go orks with kroot alies or even feral orks

Vultures, mounted Kroot, converting for Rank (Shapers) and Adaptations, none of this seems like variation? You don't have to take loads of Vultures, nor Eviscerators. I planned an army where I had one squad of Vultures and only 2 Eviscerators in the entire 2000 point army.

That "Army of Shadows" (with two or three units of Mandrakes) really seems like a fun idea...but I'm not sure how many wins you'll be getting.

mmm the dark eldar army of shadows.

Tired that once with proxy just to test it.

My opponent was very very pissed when he found out that there was nothing on the board he could wound. Then he got really scared as he relized that there was the decapitator hiding out there and several raiders waiting to drop from the sky.

On turn three I reveiled all 3 mandrake squads around a central area and deep striked 3 raiders along with them. Lost one raider to the board.

So that turn I hit is army with like 60 models as well as decapitator and an archon with a few incubi. Totally killed what I attack.

However on his turn he totally shot down huge numbers of models with massed bolter fire. Its was carnage. 30+ marines in rapid fire range. It was killer.

Finished me off in a couple of turns. Although it was a draw. Really fun game tho.

I take it you chose DE after all? Kudos to you. ^_^ I hope you like them!

My Kroot Mercenary army is approaching completion now actually.

The opinion I've got is that kroot are very hard to play unless there's a lot of woodland cover on the board as well, or you're using the jungle fighting rules. They're pretty easy to kill if they don't get into close combat very quickly. That, and not having any ranged weapons above strength 6 can be a bit harsh.

Alternatively, of course, you take green kroot.. More expensive, but ripe with conversion opportunities, a little like orks who can hide in woods and are slightly better at shooting.

But they have a cool atmosphere. I started collecting them because they remind of the 'nasty alien bounty hunter' thing in star wars. I've got my army assembled if not painted quite quickly. Despite needing a lot of conversions, kroot are mostly composed of plastics, and the painting shouldn't be too tough either when I can get round to it.
