Here is a few pics of my lord for 2005 Golden Demon. I still need to do alot of highlighting and fixing it up. The armor is suppose to be what you all see. I wanted to do a different style flame work on him, but still follow the name of his army.
Oh also, he is my lord for an upcoming Fantasy Chaos army called the Scourging Flames.
Bigger sharper pictures would definitely help when asking for comments and criticism. Going by what I can make out here are some suggestions/comments:
You definitely have a lot of work cut out for you to get this figure in shape for the demons. Again it is really hard to judge based on these pictures but this is what I would work on:
1. The color transition on the cloak needs to be much more subtle and smooth. Gradually lighten the darkest color until you reach a good contrast at the tips of the fur.
2. The highlights on the cloak part are too much too quick. Like the fur slowly blend the layers until just the highest parts are light. Feathering the edges will make it look more natural.
3. I would reconsider the armor color. Again with such small pictures it is really hard to tell what is going on. The pattern doesn't quite fit the armor.
4. shield is off to a decent start but I would again smooth the transitions between the darkest and lightest areas.
5. Think about the whole composition of the miniature. It is not impossible to win with a stock/unconverted figure - but usually the ones that do are painted very smooth and flawless and they are based in such a way as to really embody the feel of the warhammer world in them.
Good luck on your figure. I can see that it is still in a rather early stage which really makes appropriate criticism and comments hard. If you have any specific issues you are dealing with I would be more than happy to help you with them. I myself have painted up this figure and can at least give you an example of what I was talking about with the fur:
Yeah I know the pics are crappy. I really don't havea digi-cam on hand so I had to resort to scanning =\ Thamks for the advice and I will try to get better pics sometime soon.
Unfortunately good pictures in these cases are essential.
Another piece of advice on the flame pattern. Most people tend to paint flames backwards with the yellow at the highest highlight.
Flames should actually have the center a white/yellow going to orange/red and even black at the highest areas. Also just do to the shape of the armor a realistic flame effect will be hard to achieve.
Probably the best place to get advice on painting flame effects is: Hot Lead Fire Tutorial
painting armour with fire patten first paint the area red then starting from the bottom of the armour heavily drybrush up the model with a redish orange to about 4/5 then continue like this doing smaller areas of lighter colours going through orange to yellow to white
For a demon quality model you definitely don't want to drybrush. That technique is great for table quality fast figures but for competition level it is too "messy" and will be easily overlooked.
I think you should drop the flame color completly. If you insist on having flames put it on the shield or something, becuase putting it on the armour will look wierd.
I would think the only real way of making the armor look good would be to make it look molten hot rather than flame. There are great pictures and descriptions on this process at the hot lead link I posted above. That would probably work.
I can really only think that the flames would work on the armor if you sculpted them on in 3d. Otherwise the shape of the armor just isn't right to simulate flame.
I could try to sculpt flames raising on the armor and shield. I have some new sculpting tools and I haven't really used all of them yet so This is probably a great way to learn .
Slorak: Thanks for that fore tutorial also. It will come in handy soon..
