I see theres lots of new biomorphs being proposed, does this mean we have to start new amies? i guess if its just the genestealers that are the only updated plastix set then gw will expect to sell masses of genestealers with biomorhs to make lots of mhoney, well basicly will we have to rip our armies to bits to make our armies WYSIWYG compatible with the new rules?

heh i found out yesterday that im th only nid player at the boston(lincs) wargames club. sure i wont be in 1 month :D

WYSIWYG has always bothered me a little. I understand the reasoning behind it (you don't want people using pop cans for tanks, etc.), but GW shouldn't impose it so much that they drive players away. I play Tyranids and I like to take mutable CC gaunts. They are usually maxed out and come in at 13 points each (what would these be called? Deathgaunts? Pyrogaunts?) with the WS 4 and Str. 4 so they can take Marines apart. Now, although I juice my gaunts up, I don't include the adrenal glands or toxin sacs upgrades on the actual model. My reasoning for this is 4-fold:

1. I don't like the look of the upgrades on the model --- and I'll be damned if someone tells me that I MUST include things I don't like the look of on my models, which I have bought, built, and painted myself...they're going to be the way I like them.

2. I may want to field cheaper gaunts at some point - so then I'd have to wreck my models and tear the upgrades off them?

3. My reasoning is that any upgrades any Tyranids have will be on the inside of their bodies, and thus, you never see them. If they can genetically engineer themselves, why put vital organs on the outside where they are vulnerable?

4. I'm still paying the points and playing with the advantages that those points give me. Little changes to the actual models be damned.

So, while I respect WYSIWYG to a point, I'm not gonna change my models just to make some other rules police happy. I'll just laugh and play someone who isn't so tightly wound.

From my understanding, WYSIWYG is basically there to ensure your opponent can visually see what your army is equipped with. To that point, it's my understanding that, basically, everything you have on your models just needs to be the same.

Example: A space marine army has terminators with lightning claws and the player decided to add some lightning claws to his assault squads. He paints the terminator lightning claws with a blue/silver sheen, while the assault squads just have plain claws (a dull metal color). Even though they look the same, the consistent difference shows that the terminators have lightning claws, while the assault squad is just equipped with a close combat weapon that is modeled in a more "unique" manner than just having a knife. To my understanding, that's still WYSIWYG.

On the same lines, any modeled biomorph can represent any biomorph available -- as long as you keep it consistent throughout the army and its somewhat appropriate (i.e, rending claws need to be claws -- but an adrenal gland vs. a toxin gland or some such...seems pretty interchangeable to me). The key is consistency -- it's just to prevent confusion.

Additionally, if you take the time before the match to show your opponent what each upgrade is modeled by (i.e, "This upgrade is an adrenal gland, this upgrade is upgrade XX, this is upgrade YY..."), you're far less likely to have any problem from your opponent since you took the time to show him how each one is modeled, thereby reducing the risk he's going to make a mistake just because he didn't realize what a squad had (which is what generally leads to the WYSIWYG rule being there and enforced). A thread awhile back about WYSIWYG and bad experiences had a lot of examples of people proxying things like SM scouts for terminators or some such, so the opponent charged the scouts thinking they were just scouts, only to get destroyed by a squad of termies...
