I'm working on a list for Gamesday Baltimore (anyone going?) and was going to use a unit of Rangers. Problem is I can't settle on using either 1 group of 10, or 2 groups of 5. I figure with 1 group I maximize shots at a unit, and can probably kill 2 for sure a round from the unit I fire on... maybe even get 2 AP 1's. However, 2 squads can create good cross fire, and break up shooting at 2 units.
How many would you use unit wise? 1 unit of 10, or 2 units of 5?
Definately 2 of 5...just keep them in cover. You can always have the two squads shoot at the same target, so having 1 squad of 10 would benefit you in leadership, but probably isn't necessary. Just be careful in deployment so that you don't lose a unit too early.
definatly groups of 5. more chance to pin things more than anything else.
allthough I strongly advise against using 10 rangers. Rangers are slightly overpriced, and especialy in large numbers. the 100 points spent on 5 rangers could just as easily be 3 reapers. a much more capable unit. anyway, do what you will.
Groups of 3, plus one of four if that is a choice. It's much better for pinning. And you can always choose to fire them all at the same target and have the effect of a group of ten.
-can't always count on finding good cover with room for all 10 to have los on the same unit.
-2 units gives your opponent 2 more target choices
-cross fire is Godly
-2 more units the enemy has to worry about infiltrating
most definately use 2 units of five. you will have a higher chance of getting them in cover plus if one squad runs you still have the other whereas with one big squad the whole squad would go (assumeing your very unlucky)
Thanks for the advice everyone, retooled the list, 2 units of 5 it is.
