Sniper Space Marines

Hello everybody. This is a custom trait that I'm hoping people will let me use when I start assembling my Space Marines. Please don't completely tear it apart..;)

Slay but do not be slain: Sombre
Members of space marine tactical squads may take sniper rifles at +5 pts. per model. The squad may not take special or heavy weapons. Two members armed with bolters may be upgraded with M.40 targeters described in the Deathwatch kill team entry at +10 pts. per model.

Black templars are one step away from being the foaming-at-the-mouth crazies that the Space Wolves. I don't really think that they would use sniper rifles at all. Since their scouts follow their full space marines, and the regular space marines are bolt pistol chainsword wielding maniacs, I doubt that their scouts would use sniper rifles, or their regular marines

I too find it hard to imagine black templars using sniper rifles. They're much more of a leap in chainsword whirring, boltgun blazing sort of chapter. Now, back to the matter at hand. I really can't see the point of giving sniper rifles to marines, it's not the sort of weapon that's useful in huge numbers, it's far too specialised. If you need them for taking down c'tan or MC's then get a squad of scouts. The only advantage this trait would give you is the ability to kit out all your squads with sniper rifles, and while the extra range would be nice, I still think you'd be better off with bolters.

Also the way you word the trait makes it so that no tactical squads can get missile launchers, heavy bolters, plasma or melta guns... totally not worth it.

Well, I've just always liked sniper rifles. What could I do to make them worth it? You know, not too overpowered, but not all that weak?

Hmmm well it's a tough one. If I was going to get sniper rifles in a squad it'd be all or none, don't like mixing weapons, especially not ones with different ranges. so you're paying 50 points a squad for it. Oh you'd also want to make it available to seargents like it is for scout seargents. You should still be able to take heavy weapons, scouts can, so normal marines should certainly be able to. That makes a bit more feasible, you should play a few test games to find a points cost that works, I'm certainly not going to attempt it just by comparing the two weapons on paper.

i think its kind of wierd to have tac squads wield sniper rifles
scouts can already have sniper rifles
and i dont like the idea of have my more expensive sniper marine killed in some sorta blast(battlecannon?)

haha. marines dont use snipers because theyre meant to be seen on the field, proud & true. Sniping is a job for scouts. Theres a specific wording of this in a white dwarf. But tac rines arent meant to snipe. Its just somethin ull have to deal with.

seriously, just use scouts.. Freaking everyones dependant on that 3+ save.. we call them noobs where we come from. Scouts can fufull every single role you want for cheaper. Also if theyre scouts, they can be positioned anywhere on the field with infiltrate, move through cover better & are cheaper!

Hmmm

I can see where you are coming from with this trait, it would certainly make sense if it were used in a specialist Space Marine army. But all I can picture in my mind is these little kids with a whole sniper Space Marine army...sorry dude there's too much spamming potential on this one.

I dont see what the problem is. There are supposed to be 1000 chapters, is everyone saying that not one of them will have snipers other than scouts? I really like this idea, but Hellfire666 is right there is a lot of room for abuse. Say that only one squad can take sniper rifles for every 500 points or something like that. That should balance it more

Just use scouts, or that Tanith Imperial guard army. Marines dont use sniper rifles.. because that gun is not holy, it is not a sign of the marines devotion.. etc, yadda yadda..

Eep.. can we say problematic.

Make that 'one member of a squad can carry a sniper rifle' and you might have a balanced idea, and take out the M.40 targetters.. Stalker shells are extremely rare, which is why only the deathwatch use them.

Scouts would make much, much better snipers anyway. Less bulky, stealthier, and they don't have the same demands of purity and honour. As has been suggested, the bolter is a holy weapon.. the sniper rifle isn't (except perhaps a Vindicare's Exitus rifle.. and they don't let marines anywhere near those.)

uhh i disagree. maybe noob kids will use them but will find out the painful truth soon.
vs guard, orks, nids, kroot. marines need bolters.
if i got all my 5+ saves(guard) vs marines id laugh.

all sniper rifles isnt a vaiable tactic(id play light infantry guard(allows me to infiltrate) and take your range advantage.then if you move you wont use that extra 5 pts for the rifle. if you charge then you hafta ask your self why would i put guys that cost 33% more than a regular marine in close combat.
if you dont do either of the following i will break you with shooting

now im not sure every army has a so called strategy as precise and well woking as mine.(ilayden craftworld maybe?) but your sniper rifle becomes worthless in cc and it just cant muster number of shots by a bolter
