They also have a modified sniper rifle called the Exitus with a far higher AP. Can't post stats but it would drop a broadside ;)! It used to be that you could field an asassin without and Inquistor. There's no reason why you can't ask your opponents permission to use one.

Wow, most of these posts are completely useless. Cool.

The Vindicare Assassin is one of the four Officio Assassinorum operatives. You can find all four types in either the Daemonhunters or Witch Hunters codecies (they're the same in each).

To legally field an assassin with an IG or SM army, you must also take an Inquisitor Lord and retinue. Which, if you take the absolute cheapest Lord & retinue possible, will cost you 173pts total including the assassin.

yep, cool. But the vindicare is useful and can be used in a multitude of ways (the usual though being "kill the leader/heavy weapon guy/thingy guy of any importance") and is most effective against high toughness and uber armour save opponents, the first bit being a general rule for all sniper weapons because of the 4+ wound thing. It also has some special bullets (I can't tell you what though sorry) that you would be absoloutely GUTTED if you miss with. And as said before, you need an inquisitor/inquisitor lord to take it. I personally would not go for the bare minimum on the IQ but would use him as a counter-charge unit, which
is something the guard really lacks.

I have tried him and found him to be a waste of points. Remember his super sniper rifle still needs 4s to wound so even if he hits all six times (1 shot per turn) he's only going to wound 3 times. for a whopping 173 points I can't justify him, especially when I can take another Leman Russ for that cost. Perhaps at 100 points or there abouts I'd consider him again.

With an army that has as much shootiness and ap as guard, I would recomend you look at the eversor assassin as well. He gives a great CC kick, with a possible 10 power weapon attacks wounding on 4+ regardless on the charge!
He costs less than the vindicare, but I find him much more usefull. Vindicares rarely make their points back I think.
Another thing that i don't know if it has been mentioned, you can get either a Daemonhunters assassin, or a Witch Hunters assassin. They are identical, but their respective inquisitors vary slightly.

I have tried using both the Eversor, which has up to 9 power weapon attacks not 10, and the Vindicare. One thing both models do a very good job of is playing the fire magnet. With their save they can soak up a lot of fire and make your enemy waste his points and if he fails then you get to take pot shots at him with the Vindi or charge into one of his squads. What I have been doing is I always use one of the vindi's special rounds on appropriate targets and if you manage to have him survive until they are used up go to normal shots. Vindi also has the added bonus of being able to fire into close combat something that afaik is wholey unique.

I agree that the Eversor might be a better choice for a guard army. As mentioned before, Vindicares are really expensive (the most expensive assassin I think) and not really all that deadly for their price. Plus, all the guard do already is stand there and shoot so why would you pay extra for another static shooty guy?
The eversor on the other hand is a lot chjeaper, and can really kick some tail in cc. I like to rush him in with a unit of rough riders (they have the same movement profile) and kick the crap out of the nastiest assault squads. He has the potential to cause a lot more wounds per turn than the vindicare, stall the enemy, and come on, he EXPLODES when he dies. :O
