Quick DA question

as many DA players know, in the codex we see a nice little scene of Asmodai doing his whole "repent, repent" thing. if the Fallen were to repent, would they be re-joined to their brethren? surely this would be classed herecidal to the imperium, but i wanted it clarified for a possible new army idea coming up.

any help will be greatly appreciated.

I don't see any circumstance where the Fallen would be allowed to rejoin with their ex-battle brothers.

All Fallen are killed on sight and sometimes whole worlds are killed just to find 1 Fallen.

No matter how hard you repent, nothing attones for treason against the Emperor.

I would recommend you to read the Black Library novel ‘Angels of Darkness’ by Gav Thorpe; the entire novel centres on the interrogation and confession of a captured Fallen Angel, and how it affects the Interrogator-Chaplain that performs the ritual. It’s a great book, although endlessly debated by Dark Angel players and fluff nuts, who can never seem to agree on who exactly the good guys are. ;)

To answer your question and elaborate a bit on Archaon's reply, though, the answer is no. Fallen Angels do not rejoin their brethren after repenting their sins; rather, they’re absolved in death. All Fallen Angels are executed whether they repent or not; the only difference is whether their deaths will be quick and as pain-free as is possible with a bolter round through the head, or slow and torturous as the Interrogator-Chaplains try to force their confessions from them.

The Unforgiven Chapters (Dark Angels and their immediate Successors) believe that the past sins of their Founding Legion will only be forgiven by the Emperor when every last Fallen has been absolved in death, and so all Fallen captured by the Dark Angels will inevitably be killed sooner or later. Furthermore, the lower ranks of the Unforgiven Chapters are not aware of the nature of the Fallen; they know that they can be called upon by their leaders to hunt these renegade Marines, but remain ignorant of the sins of their Fallen brethren. Having repentant Fallen among the ordinary Marines would likely spoil the secret at some point, which would entirely destroy the morale of the ordinary Marines.

The only way I can imagine that Fallen and Unforgiven would fight side by side would be if the Fallen joined a group of Unforgiven without an HQ; since ordinary troops do not know of the Fallen, they might believe them to be unknown brothers, especially if the Unforgiven are not Dark Angels themselves.

It would help even more if the Fallen were genuinely interested in fighting side by side with their Unforgiven kin, and not acting all traitor-like; some Fallen have actually fallen to Chaos, but others remain loyal to their Emperor and Chapter and betrayed only their Primarch. These individuals might be interested in ‘redeeming’ their ignorant brethren and join them in an attempt to slowly turn them over to their way of thinking; however, sooner or later, the Unforgiven will likely either become suspicious or else be stopped by a Chaplain or other figure of authority who recognise the Fallen for what they are, but until then the Fallen would fit in relatively easy.

So having an army with a Fallen HQ and perhaps Fallen Elites but Unforgiven Troops is not as unfluffy as it sounds in my opinion. This is all my idea, though, and not official fluff. ;)

thanks for the replies pplz. that was my theory, that even if they did repent, they would be destroyed, firstly to stop any of this information to leak out and spoil the other subchapters moral. at the same time they would be too shamed to have treasoned the emp and killed theirselves anyway.

anyway, thanks again. thought i would just clarify things

I'm building an army using Cypher and the Fallen. I have a couple other models besides the official FA marines with Cypher that I'm modeling as Fallen. They have teamed up with some Alpha Legion, and using hired mercenaries to fill the ranks. I'm playing the army as the Fallen are trying to get to Terra and return to the Emperor himself to redeme themselves. Cypher carries the DA primarch sword (rumored per his fluff) so he is trying to return it to the Emperor.
I'm actually rolling ideas around in my head for making a DA army when the new codex and models come out next year. I'm thinking of making a successor chapter that is 110% bent on getting the Fallen, and anyone who has dealt with them or been near them, to repent and come "clean".

Whose to say he doesn't want to ram that sword into the Emperor's face as punishment for the suffering of the fallen at the hands of the Imperium, or perhaps to complete the treachery which they began all those years ago.

That's the thing about cypher, he's a wild card. Noone knows what he wants. He founds chaos cults which ironically strengthen Imperial defences, and he fights against loyalists and traitors in equal measure. In short, noone has a clue what he's up to. Your army is a good idea, but don't put thoughts into cyphers mind.. I'm sure GW will reveal what his interests are in due time.
