I've been playing 40k for about 7 years now. I've played CSM (Black Legion, World Eaters, Death Guard and Night Lords), Eldar (Ulthwe and Alaitoc), Necrons, a bit of Imperial Guard, Space Marines (Ultramarines and some Loast and the Damned) and Tyranids. So I think its safe to say I'm well versed in many aspects of this game.

But I've never felt the urge to play Orks, until now. I've never played against them and I've never even picked up their Codex and flipped through it.

The Green Tide. It almost sounds thrilling. The hoardes of green skins pouring over the terrain. Vehicles billowing black smoke as they rush towards the enemy. Rokkits flying, burnas burning. I dunno, it just feels....right.

I bought a box of Boyz and made them all into Slugga Boyz and a Nob in which I gave a Power Klaw and Choppa.

I know their codex needs an upgrade but I'm just looking for an army to have fun with. Nothing too competitive, just something I can model and paint and paint for the joy of it.

Ooooooh I can feel the tide coming :)

Whats that??

waaa *cough* WAAaaaa *cough cough* WWWAAAAAGGGGHHHHH!!!!!!

I dont get it Yoss, Bruisers the one with the waaagh! not Katalyst (who has asked for help in making an ork army to have fun with, meaning it does nmot have to the top of the line winner cause those aren't always fun...8)) so why say your going to have to close Kaalysts thread because of another member?

lol yeah, to sum it up I'm looking for advice to making an insanely fun army to play. Like a buddy of mine plays LatD and I love watching the mutants fry themselves.

I played a game once vs a friend.

I had IG, he had deathskulls loota army.

I was beaten by my own army pretty much. That was pretty fun for him. :D

As for a fun ork horde? Lots of unpredicable things like Mad Doks, Big Meks, Death Koptas, ZZzzap guns, and burna boyz. :D

Love and peace,
Yoss ^_^

Well, if you want to do the green tide, I'd recommend a few things:

1. Fast units. You need someone to tie up shooty units while you close. To this end I recommend truk boys to attack the fleshy shooters and rokkit buggies to attack the non-fleshy shooters. To really scare them, but your Boss and a retinue of mega armored nobz in a trukk. But thats more of a speed freek thing.

2. dreads or kans can make a nice wall to advance in front of (or within) your mob. What true with SM dreads is true with our dreads: they get popped. A lot. But they can't pop 9 (yes, 9 str 10 attack) kans. Or maybe they can.

3. The most honest green tide is one that has a squad or two of grots preceeding it to absorb shots and give those behind cover saves. Since grots only come in blister packs, I'd advise using fantasy gobbos. The real trick of the green tide is deception: paint all the mobs as similarly as you're comfortable, then hide the tricksy and nasty guys (skarboys, burna boys, tankbustaz, hard boys) in the middle of a million regular boys. First, the enemy can't kill thme all, second he'll likely kill the wrong people.

Or you can do speek freeks. What are speed freeks? ORks that like to go fast. Really fast. The rules are in the Armaggedon codex, and there's a nice tactica by Andy Chamber in the latest Chapter Approved that covers everything I could think to say. Except two things about Freeks: Because they have a lot of twin linked weaponry, they shock everyone with their accuracy. Second, I know they work. I've seen by brothers Freeks ride up and krump every single person at the store, even Frank, the 20 year Ultramarine vetrean.

I suppose anyone who has been in 40K awhile needs to experiment to keep things fresh. If you really want to play in the spirit of the game and can have fun without notching a W, then Orks are a terrific choice. I've played Orks, my bro played Orks, and my best freind played Orks since Rogue Trader and I've lost count of the times I split my sides laughing at them. They may lose, but it's never a dull game. And these days, they're actually pretty competitive.

My advice is to put together an army list based on the models you like without too much regard as to tactics or how they fit together. Orks are somewhat eclectic anyway, so you'd be in character. As long as you have a good spread across the FO chart, you can't go too far wrong.

Good Luck, an' may da WAAAGH! be wit' ya.

Waaagh! is all the advice you will ever need my friend *Grabs you shoulder*. Go with gork.

For cereal this time guys, if you are trying to make an army that is fun, I suggest two variants. One, like one of the other guys recommended, take hordes of boys, with many of the more unpredictable and cool bits of ork technology (killa kans, mad docs, mekboys with force fields, burna boys, etc) and just overrun you opponents in a sloppy, disorganized, albeit hilarious manner of orkdom.

Another suggestion is kult of speed, which is an army variant of semi-suicidal orks obsessed with pushing the boundaries of speed, which is a lot easier to build/play with (a little more costly however). Kult of speed is funny because it either gets blown up before reaching the opponent (due to all of its fragile vehicles), or it reaches them second turn and obliterates them with raging orks and burnas.

I apologize if my previous post was... off topic, but I can't help myself.

So glad to see another new greenskin. My gaming group loves Orks, I play Speed Freaks/Kult of Speed (You'll hear both terms thrown around), and a friend of mine plays the also popular Ork horde with lots of Kans, Boyz, Force Fields and Burnas. It is a common misconception that Orks are uncompetitive. The Horde can win quite often if you take alot of Boyz and some Grot Mobz and Burna Squads with Kustom Force Fields to protect them. Speed Freaks on the other hand can be one of the most competitve lists out there if played correctly, though they require alot more finesse than the Horde style. You have 7 years experience though so I don't think you'll be short of tactical thinking skills. Whatever you decide to go with, the bottom line is, Orks are the most fun army to play in Warhammer 40k, hands down. Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaagh!!!
