Hey guys, I know you have probobly all seen this thread thousands of times but I am comin over from playin 40k for about 2 years (imp guard) just because I want to see what fantasy is all about. I looked through the ranges and I loved the ogre models (gnoblars in particular) but I also liked wood elves because they are the shootiest which is normaly how I prefer to play my games. I also love the wood elf lord with the bow model (the one with the eagle helmet). I want to play an army that not many other people play. What race would be considered the space marines of fantasy? Well any info or suggestions would be great. Peace

i also -recently- got into fantasy, i bought the beasts of chaos and the vampire count codii, i noticed a few things: why are all evil guys dead or rumored to be dead? :D another thing i noticed is that fantasy is quite underpowerd compared to 40k, in game-terms, a black coach would in 40k have at least a twin linked assault cannon! But that's also what i'm starting to like about fantasy, it's a lot less powergaming

I don't think there is really a 'space marine' army for fantasy, in terms of popularity. The most commonly played armies, in my club at least, are orcs and empire. These were the armies from the box set for 6th edition. Since 7th edition is about to come out with a dwarf/orc box set, I'm going to assume that dwarves and orcs are going to take places of prominence. Chaos is also fairly popular, cause it is like mashing 3 armies into one.

I'd advise against going for 'shootiest' in Fantasy, although wood elves or dwarves are a good choice if that is what you want. Ogres aren't all that common either, and can be suprisingly difficult to win with from what I hear (I've never played them, and noone at my club does). I like the character of the ogre/gnoblar combo, so if you are enthusiastic enough to paint an entire regiment of them, they might be a good choice. I think Ogres are like an entire army of shock troops, but it is difficult to support them and they can get outmaneuvered.

Good luck, happy gaming!

lol, you won't find any twin linked assault cannons in fantasy. However the black coach does cause terror and have a ward save on a chariot! It definitely has it's uses.

What you will find playing fantasy is that the predominance of shooting is soooo much smaller. I've seen games of 40k end on the top of turn 1 due to losing half my army in one round of punishing fire. Fantasy games are usually still up in the air for quite a while. Be assured though that there still is *some* ability to utterly cheese armies out, and sooner or later you will play against a power-gamer or two. I don't know if there's anything that can quite compare to the classic las/plas armies of doom, (except skaven perhaps), but there still is cheese.

As for a "Space Marines of Fantasy", I can't really think of one. The closest game-play wise would have to be Dorfs in my opinion. Very very tough and no obvious weaknesses aside from moving. As far as popularity goes though, I believe chaos is the most widely played army? However chaos is two armies in one, so it's hard to say.

And... there are no "codii", (lol?), nor are there any codeces. Fantasy uses army books! I don't mind too much myself, but there are a few peeps who will babble at you for that one.

hey thanks for all the quick replies, it sounds like not too many people play WE or OK so that is good news :) I have yet to scope out the warhammer rulebook but is shooting too different from 40k? It seems like the only difference would be that 40k has more shooting units compared to fantasy. Are either wood elves or ogres totally underpowered compared to some of the other armies? thanks and peace.

In my opinion Ogres are a bit more of a finess army. They look great on paper, and indeed they will really hurt anything that they charge. However they are fairly easily dealt with by magic and shooting. Wood Elves however are considered fairly powerful. They've got wonderful elite troops and abilities. Dryads are absolutely sick for 12 points.

The reason that 40k shooting is so much more dominant is the lack of restrictions. A lascannon is just as likely to hit a guardsman standing 48 inches away as it is to hit a landraider 1/2 an inch away. Units can shoot in all directions without penalty, and the number of weapons available borders on absurd. Imperial guard armies with 54 weapons teams, SM armies with 9 landspeeders, etc. It's possible to wipe your opponent off the board in just a few turns.

Fantasy shooting can be powerful, but not nearly as game deciding. The main differences in fantasy shooting are all the to-hit modifiers, and armor modification instead of armor piercing.

Thanks for the info on shooting, i really need the rulebook but i want to wait for that new starter set comin out (skull pass or something in that manner). It seems like an OK gnoblar army would be cool but are there any other armies that can outswarm gnoblars (they are only 2 pts each)? WEs sound more appealing the more I hear about them plus like I mentioned earlier they have some sick models. Thanks for all the question answering :w00t:

A lot of people cite wood elves as a shooty army but i think that Empire and Dwarfs are much more shooty (although you gotta admire those glade guard and waywatchers)

But probably the one most people seem to forget is the skaven. Ya see there is this army type called the SAD...
