I just started a mortal Chaos army, and i was curious what i would give an Exalted Champion, if i want him to be an all-arounder. For save wise, i see a lot of people have chosen Gaze of Gods...i just just curious why??

Good cheap all-rounder is an Exalted with a GW and either Gaze or Armour of Damnation. Hits hard with 4 Str 7 attacks at WS 7, and will shrug off half of either his wounds or hits. I prefer Armour of Damnation personally.

I love the Blade of Blood on exalted champions, but gaze of gods is pretty good to. I like having blade of blood and enchanted shield, to give a nice save, and be able to regain wounds. I use this very much in border patrol on an aspiring champion, cause there is a 125pts limit on models.

For an all-rounder Exhalted Champion, nothing makes me happier than mounting him on a daemonic mount. Under the new rules, it's pretty much a no-brainer. For the discount price of 50 points you gain fear, 2 more big attacks and, most importantly, you quadruple your footprint.

think about it this way... if your exhalted champion is in a unit of warriors, his increased size means that you can bring 3 LESS warriors and still get your rank bonus. so you save back about 45 of those 50 points you spent (assuming warriors with shields)...

With chosen warriors, it's even better. you'll save about 63 of the 50 points... you're essentially being paid 13 points to bring the mount.

and what benefit does the unit gain? They no longer have to take fear checks when charged. They trade 1 warrior worth of attacks for 2 S5 attacks to the front. They can have the character charge out of the unit for a surprise assault. The EC is a lot rougher in challenges... and none of this detracts from the magic items the EC can still take!

All that, for 5 points...

To answer your question, the Gaze of the Gods is a lot better than people realize at first glance. First of all, a 4+ save is amazing, don't knock it... but the drawback really isn't as bad as it seems. The big concern is that you break from combat and get turned into a spawn, but for that to happen your character also needs to fail his rally test...not impossible, but not exactly likely, especially if he is in a unit with a musician. He would be testing on a 9, or on an 10 if within range of the general.

So you get a 4+ ward save whose only drawback involves you failing two Ld tests back to back... not too shabby.
