Experiment in speed painting

Here is a try at some speed painting. At least for me it was, all told about 12 hours for the HQ, and two troops choices. I got my hands on the Mcragge marines, and I had the Captain Sicarius model, so I got an idea to slap some paint on them and crate a trait marine chapter called the Emperor's Ghosts. They will all Infiltrate using "See but don't be seen" and the disadvantage of "They stand alone". These three units make up 500 pts, so a nice little force for something different, or something for a new comer to play when they come over. I tried to paint them as fast as I could but stil make them decent looking and meet the GW minimum painting guidlines. Seeing them close up in the photos though, I see things I want to go fix and retouch, but then that defeats the purpose. But one scout does need eyes :)
I have a thread in SM regarding the trait chapter idea and they asked for pictures. Enjoy

For speed painting there's a lot of detail; I'll give you that. It's actually quite impressive. But I find that washes are a great tool for addding shading and a really nice look. If you used a black wash on your models right now, they will improve the look of your models two fold. A darker flesh color wash for the faces will also bring out the facial details.

You'd be surprised how much better they'd look with a wash.
Orange inkwash over the yellow, flesh or chestnut inkwash over the flesh & black inkwash over everything else.
It would add about 3 minutes per mini (not including dry time) & make them stard out FAR more.

For ink washes, I use Tuburculin Syringes, 5 parts water to 1 part ink.

Tuburculin Syringes are great. You can get them at Pharmacies, where they're sold without the actual needle attachments. I discovered them when my daughter was a baby... We had to use them to give her medicine.

Anyway... That's what I do & I love it.

Hope this helps.

Hmm washes huh? I did use my black wash on parts of the HQ you can see it best on the yellow parts of the claws. I could do that to the marines, it's a pretty light, watered down wash.

Do you suggest doing it over the entire armor areas or just in parts for shading? Never used a wash over an entire model before, I just use them for certain areas, or weapons. For the flesh I can water down my GW flesh wash, and see how that looks.

What about seriously watering down my yellow ink to make a wash for the yellow parts?

I like the scouts...a little wash on them would be good. I am not a fan of the tactical marines there not very neat and the colors seem bland. Did you even primer sicarius?...it looks half done. He wouldnt meet the minimum painting guides. Go back on the tactical squad, clean up around the eyes, through in a 3rd color maybe...put some wasshes on stuff and finish sicarius, then you would have a pretty dern decent looking force.

I prefer scouts myself. This force is actually going to be mostly scouts, with a couple tac squads and some devistator squads. All infiltrators basically.

Everything was primed. My color scheme is fortress grey with bad moon yellow trim. For him, since he is the master and all, and can't infiltrate, I decided to show his rank and painted him in mithril silver instead of grey. And infact GW rules just states three colors. He has, silver, badmoon yellow, black, blood red, bronze, bleached bone, dwarf flesh, and blue. :)

I am doing factory painting right now on my eldar, I sprayed white, then followed up with a wash on all of them. Shadow Grey (more blue than grey). Then I followed up with more white to give it a crisp look (best I can that is white sucks for painting).

Not to offend you or anything, but looks like sicarius didnt even have a base coat, like you just slabbed bone, red, and yellow onto him straight off pot and out of blister.

about speed painting, i heard dipping them in wood stainers or something is works a treat.

He said it, not me. Sicarius isny justified with that paint scheme. No offense. Need a better base coat and etc.

Well the picture he looks very shinny because of the flash. But hey, like I said, he is painted in mithril silver. Although I may put an armor wash over all of him, to kind of tone it down and give it some depth, so it's not just a big shiny thing. :)

painting skill is very subjective as we all know. But considering these guys look better then my first couple of chaos marine squad I ever painted, and I spend about 3x the amount of time on those, I think these look pretty good. :w00t:

Painting is only subjective to a certain degree. A crisp and clean look, not as detail and well painted, is a standard, shows how someone cares about painting.

I think that -to a small degree- some people might be losing sight of the OP's thought... These are SPEED PAINTED and he's looking for ideas on speed-painting them better.

We could all go on and on about techniques to make the minis look better, no doubt.
What we should focus on are techniques that would add an hour or LESS to the painting time of each mini.
Also, keep in mind that speed painting sacrifices a certain degree of quality -no offense to the OP, as a speed painted force can still look decent!

For those who complain about the quality, keep in mind that quality and speed painting, though not exclusive of each other, do not exactly walk hand in hand.

Though I feel that there are areas where, even for speed painting, the minis could look a little crisper, I think it's more important to focus on speed-painting tips and less on how good/bad they look.

Sorry, if that sounded preachy. It was not meant as such.
