Potential of Grenadiers

Okay, so throughout my history in warhammer (40k and Fantasy Battle) ive played LOTS of hoarde armies, but not too many small and well armoured ones. Infact ive never played a small and well armoured force. (i know that carapace armor isnt the strongest armor but its better than space ork armor so blah).

So before everyone says go to space marines or chaos space marines, i have zero intrest in those races:D. So as i was looking over the imperial guard i though that a Grenadier Doctrine army list might be Fun. Run a few small squads of Storm Troopers as Core units, Have some sniper support squads with my HQ, and a few very small squads of Storm troopers with heavy weapons, deep strike and infiltrate to work their magic. And probably some tanks and such. But before i go ahead and conceive a full out army list, i decided to ask around here and see if anyone has played Grenadiers before, and if it a truly competitve option. Of course i would avoid other imperial infantry completly (other than storm troopers, special weapons squads, and heavy weapons squads) so i just want to know if anyone has played this kind of list, and if it is actually competitive, or at least viable to win a few games.

Thanks in advance

OH. and i would not be running mechanized with this kind of list

Grenadiers work very well with Veterans as backup fire support in place of heavy weapons squads. You can even outfit them with Caraprace armor. 3 squads of Grenadiers with 3 squads of Veterans make for a solid force.

Grenadier armies are somewhat limited in number, but if you include vets and allied inquisitorial storm troopers, than you will have 50 grenadiers, and 30 veteran all with BS 4. This is what I use all the time, and do find them very helpful (Especialy their imunity to Ap5 guns)

Most people, including myself play grenadiers for fun, as they arent realy competative when it comes to tournaments. They are low in number, and usualy quite difficult to play effectively and people always mistaken their potential with that of a space marine, which its not. I mean, overall for the last couple years IG has been placed something like 13th or 15th on the GT. If grenadiers would be used, that number would greatly increase.

No deep striking on your main troops. Use chimeras. My personal preference. You won't have to wait/worry for your troops coming when you want them too. The tanks can be used for cover for your troops to block LoS and firelanes. They can get back in the chimera to move again. Chimera + Rapid-fire range is beautiful when you can target their squads and eliminate them and they can't draw sight to your guys, keeping them alive so they can do it again to another squad. DS leaves your guys out in the open and (generally) unsupported, and more of a one round wonder, because they will get shot up afterwards. DS is better for a 5 man squad with 2 meltaguns for tank hunting, they WILL die, but get rid of that pesky tank. Use targeters liberally even when you know you can or can't hit something, and when you want to know if you can rapid-fire. Measuring is usually a rare commodity, but Storm troopers allow you to know how far you are from every enemy troop (to keep out of assault range for example), and when used properly can keep them safer than other troops. Heck you can even measure with your targeters BEFORE you shoot with your other units that don't have them (though people might get angry).

That was my plan, just to run 2 or 3 5 man squads with melta's to deep strike, and so what if they die, hopefully they enemy armor with them.

And on your note of chimera's, even though i have intrests in imperial guard, its a shame that i am not by any means a tredhead. Ive never really been a big fan of tanks, so thats why i was curious if it would even be feasable to run a grenadier army without the mechanized doctrine or lots of tanks. I mean understandibly i can handle having a leman russ or two or a basalisk, just not a chimera for each squad, im not much of a tank person. But thanks for responses, im still split on whether or not to build it. It would mostly be a friendly list, so losing is not a problem ha. Thanks for responses

I don't know...seems like a lot of people love the Chimera transport thing...

I'm not a huge fan actually. Most of the time they get shot to pieces before you even get your lads out of them. Then, using the Chimera for cover is nice - if they don't get obliterated...

I've had way too much bad luck with transports to call them overly useful. I love the Chimera, but it seems like they are bullet magnets and usually fall prey to them VERY quickly. Lose the first round roll and kiss those babies goodbye. There goes any strategy you had in place for them.

Deep Strike is nice, although risky, becuase you have a strategy in place that can be implemented. You don't need to worry that your transports might get shot up too early.

About Grenadiers - I never found my Stormies particularly potent. They are sub-par in CC and really don't pack all that much punch with the hell-gun. I'm going to have to say "overrated" on Grenadiers.

I find the Vets to be more useful, actually. IG are known for stand and shoot, so Stormies are a bit fluffy to me and outside the realm of what the Guard are about.

If they were a bit more potent a force as elites, I'd say they'd be nice to field. However, as they are I keep trying to find use for them and always fall flat. I've tried playing Stormies for 2 years on and off, but for some reason they always disappoint. They are targeted immediately and usually wiped out before anything great happens.

Your chimeras will stay alive if you put them behind cover or behind russes. Playing with the storm trooper chimera combo is all about LoS denial, you split your opponents forces down the middle so the majority of your army fights half of his at a time. It actually works quite well when Allied with GK, the storm bolters and psycannons give you a constant firebase with the russes take out what anti-tank and tough infantry they have leaving your ST to get their turn 2 or 3 to rapid-fire. Sure the list isn't foolproof and requires more skill to play than an average sit and shoot guard list, but it is also a lot more fun.
