After seeing the power of Excel in a thread found in the Necron subforum (linkage - http://www.librarium-online.com/forums/showthread.php?t=101424), I decided to follow Moozie's lead and take a stab at creating a quick and dirty army creation utility for the new Chaos Codex.
This is not a project to create an army builder replacement. It is simply a fun way for me to teach myself the lesser known abilities of Excel. That being said, I'm quite proud of what it looks like so far.
I've only done part of the HQ section at the moment. You can only build a single HQ choice, and special characters are not included, but it does include smart math and error correcting. Looking at the HQ section, you can sort of see what I have planned for the rest of the Workbook.
You will need Excel or OpenOffice to read it. I promise you that it is not a virus, no matter what your firewall or anti-virus might tell you. )
Latest incarnation of the Workbook. HQ is completely done, with support for 2 choices (1 being mandatory), including Special Characters. Elites are also finished, though due to a ton of options for Chosen, you might have to scroll down to spot the Dreadnought entry. Oh well, nobody takes them anyways.
Troops are WIP. Troops #1 works perfectly as far as I can tell, with support for all five choices and even Enhanced Warriors on the Chaos Marines. Next step is to allow up to six Troops options (two mandatory), and then work on Fast Attack and finally Heavy Support.
Wow that's pretty nice. Keep up the good work, however, I'm unable to select legion specific marines. Whenever I choose plague marines or thousands sons ( for example ) I get an error to unprotect the worksheet. When I try to do that the option is not highlighted.
Dangit, knew I'd miss one somewhere. Fixed the error and have changed the URL in post #5 to direct to the current version that works. The Troops option should now function properly.
Glad I'm not the only one who harnesses the power of Excel for 40K.
Can't wait to use the finished product.
I bet one couldn't do this with our old Codex. Oh, version 3.5, I miss your complexity so much...
Includes support for Special Characters, daemons, and gives you percentage ratings and model count figures. Please pay special attention to the first note in the 'Overall' tab - it's very important.
I think the next step will be to fix the Workbook so that cells don't vanish and reappear based on your selection - instead, the cells will just conform to whatever options you selected. In other words, I aim to remove the scrolling down in order to find the options for the unit that you selected. That's a bit more advanced than I intended when I started this project, so might take me awhile to figure out.
But for now, everyone enjoy! Please be sure to speak up if you spot an error, like I forgot to unlock a cell somewhere, or the math fudges up in places.
Was not able to replicate these two issues. Those particular input boxes (As well as the Chaos Spawn) aren't drop down lists like the rest - they require user input, and worked fine in my version. Not sure why it won't work in yours.
I've updated the link found in Post #11 with the corrected version. Thanks for the bug feedback, keep it coming.
Just downloaded it. I took the program for a spin and so far, it looks to be performing just fine. I did, however, notice that on the daemon prince and sorcerer, you do not have to have the cult-specific mark in order to take the cult-specific psi power. In other words, a non-marked prince can take cult-specific psi powers. Just thought I'd bring this up.

That is true, due to the way that I created the drop down lists. I'm sure there's a better way of making the lists populate dependent upon a different cell's value, but that's beyond me at the moment.
However, by taking a cult power without the appropriate mark, you should set off the Error check at the bottom of the HQ Worksheet.
Edit -
Found another mistake. Special Characters won't work in HQ Slot #1. Fixed and re-updated the link in Post #11 (sorry about that, those who've already DL'd it multiple times!)
Gah... with excel 2007 I'm having problems where options won't pop up or won't go away once I choose to discard a unit. This is however cured by highlighting the affected area. ( This may be a lag issue since it is also fixed if you switch back and forth between sheets )
HQ 2) The second psychic ability granted by a mark of tzeentch on a daemon prince isn't working. None of the 2nd abilities chosen add to the point cost.
The Chainfist is incorrectly reporting a cost of +10 points than what it should be. Your unit should cost 230.
Thanks for the bugs everyone. Instead of just updating it every time someone reports a new one, I'll be saving them all up and uploading a fixed version on Friday.
Hot Diggity Dog!!! My whole life just got a little bit easier! Time to go pick up my Dnought from the mailroom! This is absolutely amazing, will you accept rep? or a  ?
All reported issues have been fixed, along with a couple that I found on my own. Thanks to all of the 'Beta testers' so far, and if you still happen to find errors, please let me know.
Newest version of the Workbook can be found in post #1, for everyone's convenience.
hmmm, couple of things
defiler with 2 ccw weapons is coming back with a #n/a cost.
vindis are 75 points regardless of upgrades.
