I'll do a rough paper & pen for my basic army then write it up in word and flesh it out a bit. I've done a fair few armies most I have no intention of playing, I'll probably end up with a SM armies in the end, Wolves I'm building now and probably Templars and Blood Angels.

GW interactive army builders

http://ial.games-workshop.com/default.htm

Admittedly, I haven't used them, but I must agree with Dingareth- usually full of bugs, incorrect info and wargear combos etc etc.

Actually using pen/paper/Codexes is the best way to learn, then you won't need anything other than pen/paper- you'll remember details! It also improves to quicken your simple Math ability, never a bad thing.

2 + 12 = 20. Gah, see, I'm trying! :D

Heh heh. Army buil-durrr. Heh heh.

I actually downloaded that and spent 3 days trying to make sense of it, then another 2 fixing the stupid bleeping errors all through it that must've been taken from the 2nd edition Codex. They said it was the most recent version (and hey, who can blame them? It's not like 3rd or even 4th edition is all that old...).
Space Marines have Inquisitors now, didn't you hear? It's a Fast attack Choice.
No joke, bleeping LOOK!

Look. The time you spend just trying to fix their stupid errors could be better remade by putting it on arrays on Excel. And chances are, your Traits (if any) will make it different again.

There is a magical item called a Codex. It has all the CORRECT rules for Space Marines in it. Army buil-durr does not.

Follow these guidelines and you will not fail:
  • Armoury - Up to 2 weapons on the , not the ones from the unit entry AND 2 more, just the 2 you choose. The cost you pay for these 2 does NOT count toward 100pts for the armoury usage. You can have 2 claws, f'rinstance, and still have 100pts of gadgets.
  • Items on the Unit's basic profile cost nothing.
  • RTFM Read the something Manual.
SRSLY. I've had no trouble making lists from the 'dex except for my very 1st list, which was more of a test out than an actual combatative list.

I will have to disagree with everyone here.

I find Wolflairs Army Builder to be an indespensable tool. I bought version 3, and it was some of the best money I have spent on this hobby.

However, it is NOT a replacement for a codex. There are errors, but nothing so serious that I would not recommend the product. And if you own the codex (let me say again, it is NOT a replacement for owning the codex) it's really not a problem.

Not only do I find the product easy to use, but actually making a list, with the back and forth (hmm...what if I delete this and beef up this unit) is so much easier.

Just make sure when everything is done that you check the points totals with the codex.

Let me say it one more time. Army Builder is a great TOOL to help you make lists, NOT to replace owning the codex.

I'll second this with Army Builder - yes, it does have inconsistencies and you have to wit untill someone does up the latest codex (or put it in yourself using ABCreator - but it can get a bit tedious). But, the ability to 'tweak' squads to see what different options you have without wasting a tree is quite handy

I tend to use a simple excel spreadsheet that allows me to enter the base cost per model and the wargear costs (this you have to calculate yourself so a codex is needed) and it'll keep track of the total for the unit and the total for the army thus far.
I do have a calculator in the spreadsheet for basic adding etc (helps keep everything on 1 screen).

Pretty easy to make to with a bit of know how, i'd be happy to share it, just PM me

EDIT: Ok we don't have a PM function so email hurricane_years@hotmail.co.uk if you want a copy

I use a simple excel sheet. Took me about 20 min to punch all the data from the codex into it. I just fill in the game size I need and then start punching in quantities of models. I don't bother separating out units. So if I wanted 2x 8 man tact squads I just punch in 16 for the space marines. Here's a screen capture so you can get an idea if you want to start your own (point values blurred to protect the innocent):
