Well i played my first guard army yesterday and i enjoyed their playing style of sitting back with big guns blasting your enemy to pieces. So i'm thinking about a getting a small 1000pts of guard(At the store i used a vanquisher,Russ,Punisher,Bane wolf,2 squads of 10 with heavy weapon and a 5 man squad which was my HQ).

I guess that's about 1000pts and I'm wondering if...

-Are those are a good choice of tanks?
-Can the other guy in the heavy weapons team fire his lasgun?
-should i get a different types of bane wolf?
-Any tips or advise would be sweet

Welcome to the ranks!

What is good from what yo used from the list is the Bane Wolf and the Leman Russ Battle tank, Just as well the infantry! IG can always outnumber any army which is kinda key. So here's what you should pick up...

-Pick your HQ (Primaris psyker is a cheap easy one to do until you figure out your command squad)
-Get the two troops, get one infantry platoon and one veteran squad with a chimera and 3 meltas or 3 plasma guns
-Get a leman russ battle tank and a demolisher, they are solid tanks and fun :)

Just be sure to read through the rule book and codex! Good Luck!!

Pretty much. You can easily fit 60 men a couple of Chimeras and a couple of tanks into a 1000 pts IG.

just resist the urge to give then all sorts of equipment, with guard you best bet is to give them what they need to do their job and nothing more, when i doubt get more troops.

Example CCS:
- function: mobile support fire and orders (in a pinch they can go for objectives but should never do so alone).
- equipment: 4 Grenade Launchers and a Chimera (Multilaser turret and hull Heavy Flamer)
- This unit can zoom around supporting your footsoldiers and giving orders (orders can be given FROM units inside Chimeras but not TO units in Chimeras or any other vehicle). They are not weighted down by lots of auxillary gear like voxes, powerfists and armor they don't need and should never leave their vehicle while it's intact.

A Russ is a Russ is a Russ. It's almost impossible to go wrong, but what it comes down to is efficiency. Vanquishers will pop tanks left and right, but that's all it will do. If you're comfortable with only a single, BS3, tank stopping shot a turn, go for it. This is a perfect moment to "Insert Pask Here." He'll increase the tank to a none-too-shabby BS4, and when he sits still, the S8 shot gets a +1 bonus to penetration (which is important, it's not a +1 to strength, but to penetration.) If you go this route, feel free to give the Vanquisher a Las Cannon, otherwise keep it vanilla. In fact, keep almost all russes you take Vanilla. The Punisher, there are definately better choices out there. Eradicator, for example, is one. It's on orders of magnitude better. There are very few situations where a Punisher is a wise choice to make, but as you play guard, you'll understand.
-Can the other guy in the heavy weapons team fire his lasgun?
Yes. If you look under wargear, they have a lasgun listed. You cannot fire it if you fire the heavy weapon teams main weapon, but if you don't fire the main weapon, you can fire the lasgun normally.
-should i get a different types of bane wolf?
Personal Preference. I prefer a hellhound with a hull mounted multi-melta, but between the two, it's hard to go wrong either way.

Solar was bang on for starting, but I also recommend to looking at the army list section. It'll give you a good idea on what fellow LO'ers around here take. The more veteran list makers tend to follow a general preference for what to run, but it's by no means definitive.

A few terminology clarifications for you:

A Gun-line IG list is an army who tends to stand still and dump firepower down range. They specialize in as many long range, high power shots as they can fit, backed up by a very static Infantry platoon gunline, with as many lascannons, autocannons, grenade launchers, and mortars they can fit. Typically used with a Company Command Squad. Generally, this list contains at least one artillary unit (or squadron)

An All mech guard list tends to not run platoons, but run Veterans inside of Chimeras. All their infantry are inside of APCs, which give them incredible battlefield maneuverability. What the gun line has in sheer firepower, the all Mech list has in pure movement. Everything is on the move, you take the fight to the enemy. Leman Russes tend to feature predominantly in this list. This sort of list tends to have a lot of high strength, close range shots. Demolishers are the stars of this list, but Hellhounds, bane wolves, and sentinels can show up from time to time, along side the swarms of Chimeras (which are great little APCs). The troop choices are almost always Veterans. HQ choices are usually Company Command Squads, but a Primaris Psyker and psyker battle squads also sometimes show up and play a huge role.

An Airborne list relies on our excellent vendetta. Essentially it's a copy of an all mech list, but with more of a focus on speed, over durability. Airborne lists live fast, and die hard. They either kill their enemy fast, or go down in flames equally fast. It's a fast paced list that brings the fight to their enemy. Veterans are the lynchpin of this list. They get close, hop out of their aircraft, and unload at point blank range with their meltaguns and demolition packs.

A Hybrid list (which is what I run), is a combination of the above. It consists of a platoon or two, backed up by Artillary, usually (but not always) a pair of Demolishers, outflanking Sentinels, and Veterans in Valkyries or Vendettas. This list's strength is redundancy. If you take out their tanks, they've still got air support and a large gunline (usually with maxed out autocannons), putting high strength shots down range. If you take out the veterans, the large infantry platoon(s) can move up and take objectives. Usually taken with a Company Command squad, this particular list features few Chimeras (my list only runs a pair, at most), but fields a lot of threats. It doesn't usually win fast, and while it's certainly possible to pull off a massive victory, you're also just as likely to squeak by with a win, or tie, if you're not careful. Plus, you need to know exactly when you need to start moving your platoon up the table and forego shooting their autocannons.

The best option is to pick one of the types and go with it. I started as an Airborne player, and then slowly shifted over to Hybrid. None of the above is the definitive way to play, and it certainly isn't always about winning. What's so fortunate with guard is, as long as you follow some pretty basic rules, it's almost impossible to mess up a list. Besides, Guard is just plain fun!. :)
