Speed army core units (for expansion)

Hey guys,

I am about to begin an Ork army after years of not having been involved with warhammer. I have forgotten alot ;o I want to build a high speed army but as always with GW stuff money makes assembling a large army upfront next to impossible. Before i run off buying base units that may inevitably be uselss to me i thought i would post up two armies I think could work as stepping stones? Would really appreciate any feedback you can give :)


1000pt army

HQ:
-Wazdakka Gutsmek (to go with nob bikers)

Elite:
-6 nobs on bikes (TL shoota, Ammo runt) all have cybork bodies

Troops:
- 20 shoota boys with 3 x big shoota's + nob with PK and BP
- 20 shoota boys with 3 x big shoota's + nob with BP

Fast Attack:
- Truck with armour plates, stormboy nob

Heavy:
Battlewagon with armour plates and 2 big guns



This army could then be absorbed into:

1500:

12x Shoota Boyz, big shoota, Nob w PK, BP and Eavy Armor, Trukk

- 10 Lootas (3 of them are Meks with grots) normal guns

Troops:
- 28 shoota boys with 3 x big shoota's + nob with PK and BP
- 27 shoota boys with 3 x big shoota's + nob with PK and BP
- 20 shoota boys with 3 x big shoota's + nob with PK and BP
- 12 choopa boys + nob with PK and BP
Truck with armour plates, Bording plant, grot rig
- 12 choopa boys + nob with PK and BP
Truck with armour plates, Bording plant, grot rig
Heavy:
Battlewagon with Deff rolla, grot riggers, armour plates and 2 big guns (to stop weapon destoryed turning into immobilised)

I would say use more armour or don`t use any, because everybody is prepared for more than three. Esp. the trukks are not that good, a bolter can glance them... The trukk supposed to be fast delivery of slugga boyz, I wouldn`t use any upgrade rather than ram and/or red paint job. The warp`ead is fun but a KFF big mek more useful. Gives a nice coversave to Your trukks!

Thanks for that Fremen, very good points you bring up there :) especially about the trucks, wasnt even thinking about the fact i was using shootas. So, focusing on the 1000 point army (thats where im heading first) i made some of the changes you suggested, dropped the truck and tl shootas etc and came up with a simpler list..

as with the 1500 and 2000 your suggestions are well recieved, and pretty much can drop trukks for 2 more koptas, and reduce armor on the trukks in 2000

I would not go into realy specific things, I mean I would not like to advise You to build an army that You don`t like. You said that You are back after years. The things are changed since then: because of the objective based games, everybody goes mechanized, and because everybody goes mechanized, everybody is prepared for mechanized. But also there is the other tactics of horde armies, so everybody prepared for horde armies as well. Only non vehicle (or walker) troops can hold objectives, so You have to have enough troops in Your army.
What models do You have already? Maybe You consider to make a list out of them and try the Tankhammer 40000 before spending money on things that Yu won`t use?

- Wazdakka makes warbikers troops, don`t loose this advantage.
- PK+BP in every unit
- Use loads of vehicles or don`t use them (I mean things with AV) If You use one or two...
- `Eavy armour upgrade on a boyz nob is a waste (usually)
- Kustom Force Field: makes Your vehicles live longer or gives a cover save to Your footslogging units (which is nice when You can roll SV againts Demolisher cannons)
- What is a ususally working ork army is: Battlewagons with shoota boyz OR trukk charge (this is what I have) OR Kan wall list OR footslogging horde (these last two makes a nice combined force)
- We are lack of anti-tank units, which is why many people beleives in Lootaz (some hates them, because they`re too random)
- Warboss makes Nobz troops
- Gretchin are very good to holding Your home objective or giving cover save to other units (like lootaz)
- An all biker army (with some grotz and lootaz at the back) is one of my dreams, and I have to say dreams, because the bikers are ridiculously expensive! It lloks like: Wazdakka, 1 Warboss on bike, 1 Unit of Nob bikers and the rest are warbikers. All scoring, have a nice coversave, a good shooting ability etc. But costs You b****y 300 quid! While AoBR slugga boyz are very cheap. (This is why I have a trukk charge army) The most i loved is the biker list, with some changes: change the boyz to a warboss and 10- 15 gretchin, drop the koptaz as well, take a unit of ten lootaz instead (behind the grots)

But really, what models do You own just now?

Sigh. ummm so, once again great points. A few things,

Wazdakka turning FA into troops, if i did this what FA would you put in there to take advantage of this?

PK and BP make sense, i just got army builder today and am working out the kinks in all this fine stuff at the moment.

Kustom force field - does his mean I need to have a weirdboy to get it?

I really like the idea of lots of shootaz and maybe one lot of choppaz in battlewagonz over something like trukks?

As for what I have currently alot of it is still in the post (As the aussie dollar is kicking ass at the moment I can import stuff from the US at more than half price...!!!!) So i have some sweet stuff coming from Forgeworld, to make Wazdakka and some nobz on bikes. I also have a fair few boyz on the way. As for everything else (trucks, wagons, canz etc) that can all be changed around.

Wazdakka turns only warbikers to troops, which can be taken maximum as 12 but You need space to move them around, loads of PK, so You would rather take them in 6

No, it is the Big Mek that has the KFF, the Weirdboy is the shaman (which can`t take bike or any wargear)
The only reason of taking KFF Big Mek is to give cover to footslogging boyz or vehicles. Bikers already have coversave.

No, Warboss makes nobz troops, (one warboss=one unit of nobz or meganobz as troops), does not matter how they equipped. Warbike is a wargear to nobz, they are not separated as biker nobz and nobz on foot.

gretchin stays on the same spot (hopefully) which is Your objective. There is no reason to transport them or move them around (except in an all gretchin army)

An all bike army could cost You a fortune! 3 bikes are about 50 dollars, You need 30-40 of them...
You can have only two HQ and only one wazdakka, who takes a HQ slot, so one wazdakka and an other HQ.

All biker armies are fun to play but You have to know your army inside-out, and needs lot of tactical experience, it is not recommended as a first army. You going to loose for long time :( I know from experience...

argh... again! i spend like 30 mins typing a reply and it doesnt post. depressing. OK, to summarise, all great info, I think i understand it all now :)

One thing however, Big mek cannot have a KFF and be mounted on a bike at the same time, I'm assuming I would throw the Big Mek into a transport vehicle with the sluggas? And would you suggest having a Warboss or a Big mek? I made what i think is the 'final soloution'and have uploaded the exported army maker chart onto my website so you can have a look and see what you think. I think it could be good as it covers alot of areas :)

Yeah, that`s what I was talking about!
I recommend KFF only in a list where You use more units that need coversave, loads of boyz on foot or loads of transports. You don`t have in this list, so I would go with a biker boss (and You`ll have an extra scoring (troop unit), as You can put the nob-bikerz to a troop slot. For 135 pts; Warboos, cybork, PK You put him and Wazdakka with the nob Bikerz and You will have a nice tankhunting unit that will draw fire big time! Meanwhile You can sneak up with the rest of Your army.
The boyz are better with shoota than slugga in this list), especially because You don`t have a PK nob with them, so why would You assault? When You go up on points, don`t forget to add on that PK nob and maximize the unit to 18-20
You still have 5 points left, give a big shoota to the Wagon.
Or even drop a nob-biker and give a deffrolla to the wagon and some more boyz.

Ima kill this forum soon, every reply I type it eats!!! Nice changes there totally get it :) With the warboss on a bike is he able to technically join the nob elites turn troops? Are two HQ allowed to be with one troop? or would he just kinda tag along for the ride so to speak? As for turning boys into shootas would I have a use for the battlewagon if they were to change over? I was more thinking the BW would be getting some of those choppas straight into the action asap with the bikes? Other than that its looking really good :D Thanks for all your help I really appreciate it. I made up a few more lists at work yesterday (750/1000/1500) to establish some armies I can get playing with before i reach the 1500 mark, which also took into account what I have already bought - i might post those lists up here when i get to work fory ou to look at if you are happy too :)

I really would advise to try the 750 list first than You going to see what`s working for You.
There are things that You got to experience and I can`t explain. For example: model count. You need loads of models in an ork army because they have no armour, they die easily. That You will learn during Your first battles.
