Negating Rank Bonus - When?

Ranks are counted at the start of the combat. But if the unit has been charged by a unit (not skirmishers) with US 5 or more, it gets no rank-bonus.
So the question is: Do the unit get its rank bonus back during the same combat-round that it reduces the flankers below US5?

According to the rulebook the ranks are counted at the beginning - and at that point none of the flankers have been killed. But it seems odd that the unit could get wiped out, and still negate the ranks.

I would really like to see the wording of the rule that clarifies this.

Yes. If you have no >US5 units in combat with side/rear when it comes to counting up your combat resolution then you regain your rank bonus. The "start of a round" reference is only to make sure you still get your full rank bonus even if your last rank was killed during the combat.
