Are lords worth it in 2K?

Hi all, just wanted to get your opinions on something:
Is it worth taking lord level characters in 2000pt games? If you are going the magic route, then it certainly makes sense to take a great bray shaman or something (more point efficient than their mortal counterpart).
But, if you are not really doing magic, is a Lord of Chaos worth the 110 points more than an Exhalted Champion? It is more than double, which seems a bit steep (though he is pretty cool).

Any input would be much appreciated.
Cheers

as always, it depends what kind of army youre fielding.

in an standard chaos army, it is usually better to go with two exhaulted champs rather than one lord, and in the new rules, to go with one exhaulted and one battle standard bearer(more combat res now).

however, there are times where youll may want the ld9 of the lord. for example, if youre fielding a few beastherds, or using the helm of many eyes. same goes for if you want to field chaos trolls. these are off the top of my head.

a lord also lets you use 55+ point magic items, like the spell eater shield or hellfire sword. with 100 points worth of magic items, these guys can become real monsters, where a mere ex champ could be dealt with with a properly equipt troop.

the other obvious reason, is if you really wanted to field a dragon, this is the only guy that can do it.

just remember, if youre gonna go down the path of mo lord whn youre enemy can, be prepared when they spring a powerful character on you (black orc big bosses come to mind)

so you're better off doing what suits your army. i traded my lord for an exhaulted champ and 15 marauders in my 2k list, but im stll deciding too...

cheers, tim

The "cool-factor" is really important IMO, since I spend so much time on the theme of my armies. That said, let's look at the benefits of the two:

Taking a sorcerer lord really puts you in charge of the magic phase, no matter what army you're facing (combined with at least one lvl2 sorcerer of course). This alone can win you the game if you go for the destruction lores (slaanesh, heavens ..). Magic is however quite unreliable, especially when 7th ed. arrives.

The fighter lord is a different matter though. In a 2000 pts game he's a bit overkill IMO, Since the exalted champion is such a tough character on his own. I'd prefer to take 2-3 of them instead. It's only really vampires and saurus heroes who can match them in close combat.

The whole thing changes if your opponent usually plays lords though. Your heroes are in for a tough fight if the enemy lord shows up where you don't want him.

So in a 2000 pts game .. if you want to use a lord choice .. I'd rather go for a sorcerer lord than a fighter lord. But me myself .. I wouldn't use a lord at all.

Ciao!

I would take a lord in a 2k army, they will give your opponent a lot of trouble. Also they make the game fun and panic the enemy, just watch out since you won't have much else of a force!

I prefer a chaos lord over the exalted champion double team. The ld9 is invaluable (particularly for a "hold at all costs" strategy) and gives your units that extra edge.

But I think the extra WS is where it is at. Oh sure, two exalteds are more choppy, but a lord can really do the dirty on most other lord choices in the game (with the exception of vampire lords, primarily) and act as an "assassin" against the strongest character your opponent has to offer.

His T5 makes his much more resilient against those S4 characters with great weapons, and you can really make him quite resilient with the 100pts worth of magic items.

But it's like anything - neither one is unconditionally "better," it purely depends on what role characters will play in your army. If you're looking for kills at the expense of (ld) reliability, exalted champions are the way forward. If you want a more general purpose character who can boost your army, the lord is a better choice.

Plus lords are more iconic than exalted champions

Thanks!

Cool, thanks for the input guys. I agree that you sure can make one monster of a lord, but if you use that qhole 100pts of magic, you are looking at over 300pts for one character... OUCH. Especially concidering the high cost of other stuff in the army. Anyway, I'm still a way from 2K, so I've got plenty of time to think about it ;)

Thanks again

you know what ive learned about the difference between lords and 2 heros, if put against eachother who wins. THe lord. Thats why I run the lord, because my friend who swears by his 2 exalts looses every game we play that ends up my best unit vs your best unit. And i laugh every time.
