Who is your favourite Science Fiction author?

Mine is Alastair Reynolds, incredible technology and aliens. But what I like most about his books is that everything is logical science speculation, no magic or gods or messiahs. I'm tired of the Science Fiction and Fantasy books that are about: 'One young man destinied to save mankind on his own with is special powers'. Sadly, 90% of the other books seems to be roughtly based around that theme. Has anyone read his books? Revelation Space? Chasm City? Redemption Ark? Absolution Gap?

William Gibson outstrips all of his competition (well Heinlen is a close second but still). It is such dark noir writing. Neuromancer is definitely his best novel. In my opinion it is one of the best science fiction novels of all time. It was the only novel to foresee the internet in a genre that prided itself on seeing the future. There would be no matrix without Neuromancer (even calling it the matrix came from Gibson). Just plain brilliant writing

Well for me it's Douglas Adams.

I was almost in tears when I heard he died, such a sad day.

    Terry Pratchett?

Hes one of my favourites. Small Gods, Reaper Man and Sourcery are all fantastic reads. Aside from Pratchett, I really enjoy reading Douglas Adams, Rob Grant and Sandy Mitchell (of the Ciaphas Cain Black Library book line..).

I am looking for some new books, and since you seem so convinced Gibson is the best, I think I'm going to read his books. Thanks for the tip . Wich book is the first in his series?

Douglas Adams was an incredible writer. Have you read 'The Salmon Of Doubt'? It's the book that convinced me to be a hardcore atheist.
