Welcome to Librarium Online!
I got an old High School-level Geography book (from Oregon) today as a gift from my brother. Dated to the year 1900. Yes, 109 years old and it's soooo cool!
Full of Pre-World War One maps. Some highlights - includes the countries of Austria-Hungary, Persia, the Turkish Empire, Annam, Siam, Bukhara, French West Africa, British East Africa, Nubia, the French Kongo, Rhodesia and others.
East Europe consists largely of the German Empire which stretches to the Niemen river in modern Lithuania and large parts of Poland; the Russian Empire, which includes much of Eastern Europe, Austria-Hungary and the Turkish Empire. Finland and much of central Asia are also part of Russia. China has the rest of central Asia, including Mongolia. India stretches all the way to what is modern day Thailand (listed as Siam, of course).
Also full of good old-fashioned racism. European Ayrans are described as the most civilized people in the world. Nearly every non-white race, except the Japanese are "savage." Muslims are "Mohammedans," Hindus are "Brahmanists" and Pagans and Africans are "the more ignorant tribes of men."
Such a different time, to think of everything that's changed since 1900 and I have a small window into those days now. This is before WW1, Europe was still ruled by Kings, Africa was still ruled by Europe and Hawai'i was more or less an independent nation.
Things like that are crazy, and really in the scheme of things 100 years isn't too long ago, there are still (a few) people born then who are still alive.
Call me a nerd but I really like Historical Atlases, that show maps of different times in history, its strange to see how things change.
