Welcome to Librarium Online!
I had to share this with you guys. I found out about an armored vehicle used by the U.S., Canadian, Egyptian, and Australian Armies. Its called the M113, and has been used since the 1960's. It looks like a Rhino.
Not only does it look like a Rhino, but it is also the chasis used for several other vehicles. The above picture is a transport that carries up to 11 solders.
It can also be upgraded to have a variety of turret mounted weapons and artillery.
Thats a predator variant.
Heavy Flamers? Thats an immolator if I have heard of one.
I'm not sure if GW copied this one or not.
Totally a whirlwind.
It fulfills a lot of other rolls too.
Back when I was in the armored infantry, I drove around in an APC just like the one you posted first. It is actually designed to hold 12 men (but it could hold close to 20..), so it is too big to be a rhino. Furthermore, it is open-topped, because we opened the top hatch and had the sarge and the LMG-assistant stand up and shoot people at people that tried to assault the vehicle. It usually carries a .50 cal machinegun too, so I guess it is more like a razorback.
The second is a PNMK ("pansret maskinkanon"), purely a fire-support vehicle, that carried no more then its 4 crewmembers. It is armed with a 25mm machinecannon, which is what I imagine an autocannon would be like...
Yeah but GW has a lot of other In-acuracies concerning armored vehicles too.
In 40k, your standard GI with an assault rifle (cough, necrons and tau cough cough) can destroy the equivalent of a Bradley. To be realistic, infantry really cant destroy a bradley with anything but a Javelin, or maybe a TOW. Even then, hope your a good shot.
The Rhino is about the size of a Peugeot, but some how carries 10 12' tall marines! While the firing point on the top of the vehicle covers almost the entire top surface area only 2 people can fit through it!
Tracked and wheeled vehicles only move twice as quickly as infantry. Thats about 10-14 miles an hour at best.
Your right though. The similarities between the M113 and the Rhino are really only austhetic.
Yea, those tanks and apc really do resemable rhinos, pred and whirlwinds but i think they would be abit bigger conisdering you have to fit 10 marines ot 5 terminators in them, also since there is not really an form of landraider, you get to kinda see a lifesize LR in the pc game FireWarrior.
Make me wonder were they got the idea of a huge Apc tank from, mayby an older version of a ww1 tank or something??.

You do know that they have been around for ages.
if you want to see them in action watch the last 20mins of Black hawk down.
PROUD TO BE IN THE BRITISH ARMY.

A standard nato 7.62 mm, fired from within 100 meters, can pierce the side and rear armor of the M113, and a .50 round can threat even medium tanks. The protective value of armored vehicles are overrated. The only real protection you can count on against todays weaponry is to avoid getting shot at in the first place...Originally posted by Shiver@Mar 18 2005, 085

actually, against the more lightly armored vehicles, , like BTRs, infantry can take out with an AT4, 50 cal, or even a well placed M203.
infantry are the most dangerous thing for any vehicle, be it an APC, a LAV, or even a full blown tank. now a tank you will need a javelin or a TOW. a well trained assaultman with a SMAW could take a tank out too, or at least damage the two most importat areas, the tracks and the turret to the point it won't fire the main gun. of course, the smaller, anti personell weapons it has like a 240G or 50 cal would be easier to take out.

ever thought that games work shop copiy their vechiles from the army?
The Bradley is the US military's biggest mistake ever. It's a troop carrier that has tinfoil armor, it's a scout vehicle with a 9' tall profile, it's a fast attack vehicle capable of doing a blisteringly fast 40-something mph, and it's an attack vehicle that has a 20mm chain-gun. So, um, yeah, what's it for again?
It was developed during the korean conflict, where it was supposed to be good at being an all-terrain vehicle, but that was shot down as the tracks turned out to be too narrow to allow it to run through rice paddies and other assorted difficult terrain without getting bogged down. It was modified during the Vietnam war and only proved slightly more effective at moving through the jungle as it did moving through korean fields.
As was stated above, a 7.62mm round (pretty much standard for any army but the US, using 5.56mm rounds) can punch through the rear armor on a bradley and damage the engine to the point where it explodes. A .50 calibre bullet can punch through the armor on the bradley anywhere, yet the US military continues to use them as various support vehicles.
In today's military, the bradley fighting vehicle continues to be the only bradley that sees front-line combat duty as anything other than a transport for light mechanized infantry, and has a limited usefulness at that. In support positions, though, the Bradley MPV shines, as it can be configured for a number of different tasks, such as a communications tower, front-line ambulance, and as a last resort you can hook a number of bradleys up to function as an impromptu m88 armor repair vehicle with the capacity to tow an m1/a1 abrams main battle tank.
Edit - removed: *posting on painkillers > me* Those are m110's, not bradleys. Still, my opinion on bradleys remains the same
I was in the military for 6 years as a 19kO01 - M1/A1 Abrams crewmember, stationed in Vilseck Germany with the 2/63 armored battalion. And yeah, they do look like GW ripped off the basic design for use as a rhino, no wonder they neutered them in 4ed, bringing them back from a decent vehicle and turning them into basically what we're using today.
