Last night, I checked on my swamp, my newest piece of terrain. It's simply two pieces of cardboard glued to one another, with a hole cut in the top piece, and that's filled with glue.
Anyway, it's been drying for about a week and a half now, and there's still some visble white from the glue.
So I took the piece to my father, to ask him how long it would take to dry, so I could paint it without worry. His reply:
"What is this?" "A swamp, huh?" "Don't you think you could of cut the edges of the cardboard nicer?" "This hole for the swamp itself sucks, why don't you redo it?" "Anyway, the glue might dry a bit more, but you should just redo it, since your hole is all goofy."
I'm not being a baby and crying about it, but he just harshly criticized something his son made for a game...
Sorry, I need to complain, he really got me mad. And in fact, I don't think my swamp looks that bad...
You may die today
Come, we shall pray
For your soul
To reach the final goal
Breach our armor
The bullets will
But our spirits can never become a kill
So why not explain to him everything you just explained to us?
Take your concerns to him about why you think what he said was overly critical and uncalled for.
Stating your opinions to him like a man may get him to stop treating you like a child.
And if he blows you off (or blows up at you) for that, than yeah, he's a jerk.
BTW..It's pretty cool that you make your own terrain!
Okay so I'm not gonna lock this because this could be a good opening for a conversation about how some of us enjoy this hobby with little support and/or outright herassment from our loved ones. Please in the future don't make posts to simply complain about how you're treated at home. We're all freinds here, but to be honest with you not many of us care that your daddeh (yes i spelled it like that on purpose) hurt your feelings. Maybe he was just in a bad mood. Don't let things get to you so easily.
Well.. If he doesen´t like it, ask him to show you how he would do. Making terrain might develop into some cool farther/son thing. Try it!
Well, it's his opinion. However I think it's better to have a criticizing parent then one who says "looks good" al lthe time.
Consider a possibility he might be right and you are looking at your creation through rose-tinted glasses of the creator. What does it tell you?
Maybe begin doing another swamp piece - with _less_ glue (and faster one). Try practicing.
Yeah, whenever make terrain or paint my figures I always get my teacher to give me some critism, he has no idea what warhammer's about so he makes a great neutral person to review it for me. That way I don't always think to myself "Yeah this looks great..."
Sometimes he's harsh about it, but in the end it makes me realise what I need to do when i remake the terrain, or if i make a similar piece, its actually more helpful (or at least i think so) for someone to be brutally critical about your work than to say, "Yeah its good" over and over just keep you happy.
why dont you post a link to a picture of your swamp and we can see it?Originally Posted by NIN

Sounds more like constructive critisism to me. Just have him build it with you, and help you out. In the end if it looks shoty then you can just not listen to his advice because he doesn't know what he's doing. However, if it looks nice then you should have him work with you on lots of projects.
Just make sure he works with you and doesn't do the whole thing himself, because that's no fun.
PLease post a picture I would like to see the swamp. Just because if its really good then yes your dads a jerk but if it has obivios(sp?) flaws then maybe it was constructive critisem
I though everyone made their own terrain... Have I been wasting my time?Originally Posted by Joker
My family really hates 40k. First my dad wouldnt let me get it because it was overpriced untill I said I would use all my money on video games LOL. My mom still hates it and my sister hates it even more. My dad is starting to like the models but I dont know.
NIN, get a second opinion. Somebody that didnt know you that well would give you a better response.
You know, maybe your dad was trying to give you constructive critisism but his expression or word choice came out the wrong way.
