i think: "We were soldiers" is the best war movie. Although saving privat rian is good to, we were soldiers gets to me the most.

Hmm difficult... I really love Full Metal Jacket, but there's other rel good ones as well, like Black Hawk Down. I dislike Saving Private Ryan for the story, and We Were Soldiers because of the ridiculous switching from VC to US sides where every single VC move is anticipated, though the rest is cool.
Hmm, what's with all these movies having titles of 3 words...
Ze titles yez...

All those new war films you've listed so far are great when it comes to special effects but that is also as far as they go (with a few exceptions which are listed below)... <_<

I am something of a war film freak and if I have to name the best war films ever I'd list the following:

-A Bridge Too Far (the best warfilm EVER&#33
-The Battle of the Bulge
-The Longest Day
-Patton
-MacArthur
-The Guns of Navarone
-Platoon
-Stalingrad
-Das Boot
-Kelly's Heroes
-Where Eagles Dare
-The Eagle Has Landed
-In the Halls of Montesuma
-Band of Brothers (I know it's a series and not a film but it's exellent)

That's all I can think of for now...

A few of my favorites have allready been listed, but I think Saving Private ryan deserves yet another mention simply for the Omaha Beach scene. Guns of Navarone is a pretty cool old school WW2 that I haven't thought of until Boba mentioned it, another couple of great oldish ones are Hamburger Hill and Battle of Britain.

And even though there are alot of inaccuracies (The charge at the Nek wasn't orded by a British Officer as they show in the movie), Gallipoli is a pretty good historical War movie.

But seriously if you want to find out better infomation about 20th Century wars you should read some books, two I highly reccomend are Gallipoli by Les Crayton and The Battle for Iwo Jima 1945 by Derrick Wright, much better than any movies ever made in my opinion.

I left out Gallipoli and the Battle of Britain because they both have flaws (having said this, they are both a part of my collection)...

Gallipoli was IMO a very boring film and as you say it had some historical errors.

The Battle of Britain seemed like one of those films where the effects were more important that the story it self BUT it stayed true to actual events.. It's one of those films that is exellent if you are already into the Second World War and understand what's going on.
