Welcome to Librarium Online!
There has been a question bouncing around in my head for some time, why do people like anime? I mean come on, the plot lines are all the same in every comic. The only magna I personally like is Lone Wolf and Cub I would like to see if any one agrees with me.
Some of them are foolish, but then again some of them are supposed to be. I like manga (that would be anime in the comic book form) and I also like western comics. so far the only difference I've seen between the two is the artistic style and the cultural references. If anything the serious manga are more mature then most western comics. Manga tends to focus a bit more on the abstract, things like love and other sentiments, or the relationships between characters, with a bit of action thown in to spice thinsg up. Western comics tend to be more action oreinted, with the phylisophical stuff thrown in to spice up the fighten'.There ar also some maga series that are supposed to be funny or lighhearted, and there are somee western comics of the same nature. Generaly "funny" comics on both sides of the board are to some extent parodies on the more serious work they share shelfspace with.It really doesn't make sence to me how somebody can love anim or estern comics and hate the other. They're the same thing. they deal with the same issues and the same concepts, they just appracoh them in slightly different wasy.
Anyways that's my rant for the nigh. I'm off work now so I'm going to go eat spaghetti and spennd the night..well I can't really tell you about that part..G'night. ^_^
There was an old thread called "the always hate manga clan" where people went to complain about anime, but it got filled up with pedants arguing that manga and anime weren't the same thing. Then anime-heads hijacked it and started discussing their favourite shows!
I agree with you to an extent. Like any pop culture art form there are some gems in anime, but the vast majority of it is vacuous bollocks that no-one would watch if it didn't have the mystique of coming from Japan (the favourite country for westerners to become obssessed with)
Plus alot of it seems to sexualize children (characters that look like ten year old girls with breasts) but I think that is a cultural thing so I can't really complain about that.
But yes, alot of manga and anime does indeed suck. Kind of like entertainement media in general.
PS I agree with Edicius that manga and western comics are pretty much the same thing, so if you like one and not the other then you are being a bit inconsistent. That said I don't like most western comics either, although some are excellent. Comics are one of the most cliched mediums around IMO, though they have the potential to be ground-breakingly good

I am also a big anime and manga fan, but what i really hate is when this happens
Hope Is The First Step On The Road To Dissapointment.
Anime and Manga rock! Give me gundam wing and evangelion anyday!
loves the funeral for hearts.
A few Gundam movies are good, some of the books are too, ALL myazaki kicks ass (Fine, half of it was made for 5-year-old girls, but Princess Mononoke is THE best animated movie i've ever seen)
For manga? One word: Akira.
But some of it well and truly sucks. I won't go into it, because there's so much of it. Some things annoy me- dubbing (What the hell is with all the f@#%ing British accents?! It's a damn JAPANESE movie!) Ever seen Endless Waltz? an OK Gundam movie- but one part really annoys me, where some of hte good guys are running down a corridor, and the bad dudes come out with submachine guns and spray 198013543 bullets into the air. Needless to say, they missed. It's a STRAIGHT LINE, for God's sake!
A man's at odds to know his mind, for his mind is aught he has to know it with.
hahaha thats just like the "new" transf0rmers series... though by now they are old. i am referring to the beastly wars stuff... such garbage, but hey it was transfromers. heh they would shoot and shoot... and shoot... and then shoot some more and still miss :o  . and they were machines!!! i mean come on... how hard is it to miss when you are a machine firing at another machine who is just blindly charging you. heh but oh wells thats western cartoons for you. its always preserve the characters so they can make another 3 seasons out of the series where half the series is recaps of what happened last season... o yes and gundam is pretty good.
o yea and pidgeon_death that was pretty funny and accurate. and didnt they already get naruto?
Because there's no accounting for taste, and neither should there be. If people were the same, the world would be pretty dull.Originally Posted by Cosmo_Kramer
And the same argument could be made about American action movies, for example, they still make a lot of money. What about slasher movies, again, always a similar plotline, and yet few people complain about people liking them.
Frankly, what's foolish is to be surprised when people find their own appeal in things, rather than going on the criteria you would use to judge quality.
The sexualized children (big eyes, oversized head) thing was borrowed from Disney (one of manga/anime's biggest influences), well done Disney!
And the majority of the people I know who are 'Japan-obsessed' (and being Japan obsessed, though not an anime fan myself, I know quite a few) are so because they like manga and anime, which could be considered shallow, but I'm not in the mood for judging people with shared interests. Therefore, to attribute the genre's success to it's Japanese status seems a little short sighted to me.

Another thing is that you can't just say anime is anime. There are a lot of different types both in genre and the targetted audience. The "western cartoons" are either funny or action-oriented and for younger people. Japanese animes however tend to cover the whole range of Japan's people, from the youngest to even people of old age. Any genre you have in real movies (sci-fi, fantasy, comedy, drama, horror, lovestories, action, thrillers ... and yes, even porn) also exists in anime there.
And would you say that all real movies are the same?
I for myself know a lot of animes I would not watch. However there are some that are just great and have yet to be rivaled by a western counterpart.
You should google around and take a look at "Jin-Roh". It's kind of a political thriller involving an intrigue between two rivaling police forces within a Tokyo of an alternate post-WWII-era. The style in which the movie is drawn is quite realistic - and you would not find any "sexualized childs" in there.
Just to give you one example of an anime that doesn't fit into the common prejudices.
I also like the "Record of Lodoss War", a fantasy saga that now consists of three different series. The opponent of the series' heroes is the coolest anti-hero I've ever seen - not just being a "generic bad guy", but having his not-so-dark intentions and reasons to act like he does. In fact I even find him more heroic than the serie's main character.
Oh - and did you know that this series has been created out of a popular japanese roleplaying game? That is why you might find a lot of funny clichees in there. ^_^
