Is it just me or do most people who play 40k listen to metal or hard rock? Every games workshop i've ever been to usually plays metal too. On one ocassion a store was playing greenday but that's about it. Does anyone find this constant barrage of metal disturbing? It really breaks my concerntration when playing. And no I don't listen to some girly band or emo. Not that I have anything against those bands.
OH NO.... Why would you do this?
You should know full well this post is going to turn into a giant argument about music and will end up being locked/deleted a little later than it should be. This will serve no purpose what-so-ever.
That being said... ^_^
I've never been into a store that had music playing period. But I wish they would play heavy metal. Whats the problem? Do you have something against good music? So you don't listen to emo? good. But then what do you want to hear? Country? Crap oops I mean rap? None of those really fit the 40k environment. When you picture all out war in a 40k battle you think loud screaming guitar or drums. Something war-like. Something to get your blood pumping. That's what tank soldiers listen to inside their tanks in Iraq right now. Apparently it fits the mood. (according to them). If it bothers you that much ask them to turn it down. If all else fails block it out or just enjoy some good music.
It just so happens that the majority of wargamers listen to metal. Certain cultures (I guess sub-cultures in this case) have certain musical preferences. Rodeo fans generaly listen to country music, the blonde Abercrombie crowd llistens to lame soft rock stuff like Dave Matthews and Phish. It's just a byproduct of the culture they're a part of. Metal has been in Warhammer for a long time though, especially 40k. A lot of the original models and stuff wreaked of Metal influences. some of the rogue Trader era models looked more like GWAR rejects then space travelers.
As far as this topic I think it may have been brought up before but I can't find it, and as long as this doesn't degenerate into a flamewar (highly likely but not definite, have faith in our members ) I don't see why we can't keep it open.

personally im not a big metal fan but as has been stated before, if you look at the history of warhammer metal runs alongside it, GW even had their own rock music label at one time

You've never been into a store playing music numberofthebeastxxx? I can't remember the last time I've ever been in a store not playing music, heck there have been occasions where I've gone into a store just to listen to the music they're playing.
On topic though; other music styles really don't fit well with the atmosphere of 40k, except maybe classical with alot of organ. Country, rap, and pop don't really go with the dark gothic nature of the game, just like you wouldn't expect to hear Metal in an Old Navy store.

its probly becuz gamers are nerds, andmost nerds listen to heavy metal, thats the explanation i got from my step dad anyway...
Why would nerds listen to metal? I just don't see any logic to it, mabye i'm just being too stereotypical. I'm more of a punk and ska man anyway. Metal is just too loud and violent for me, too depressing an sick also, mabye that's why it reflects the game.
My local GW plays funny songs, TV show theme songs and songs from video game soundtracks.
You know it's really funny. As I was reading this topic, I'm listening to metal. It's just what I like for the most part. However, I also like a good deal of classic rock (e.g. Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd) and if you had me listen to a good techno or underground rap track that would get me headbanging as well.
Ace of Spades, I bet if you played your own stuff in your head and hyper-focused on your game it would block out whatever your local store is playing. It works when I go play pool with my crew and the local crap station is playing Blink 182 or some other sub-par band.
Victorus aut mortis,
DISCLAIMER: No offense is meant to the fans of Blink 182 and fans of similar bands. The above statements about said bands are only my opinions on them.
