More often than not you'll see fewer girls where "nerds" hang out and do stuff. I have been noticing that there's even less when it comes to minature war gaming. Until just recently the average girl didn't play video games, and then they came out with Dance Dance Revolution and The Sims. It's definatly a market that I think GW hasn't found a way to tap into. I'm not saying that guys are better. I'm just making a statement about the general interest level. There aren't really to many all female Fantasy Armies, and there's just one 40K army (that I know of). So yeah, what's the deal?
The ratio of guys who like war, bloodshed, evil, darkness, and hardwork is far greater than the ratio of girls they do. (Think about 1 to every 1000)
Its a matter of which would bring in the biggest profit.

What about painting, modeling, and playing intelligent games?
i think if GW would make an army for Warhammer :Fantasy mainly consisting out of females , that would make it a lot more interesting for girls too... something like an amazon army orso...
but you would draw a lot of perverted teenage guys towards the game with that too
Look, it's just like teh fact that when you go into a comics store, you hardly see any girls. It just isn't their bag, most of the time. It's not a sex thing, but rather a gender issue. Most girls are discouraged from liking too many "boy things" when they are young, and our society steers them into more "feminine" hobbies.
That being said, my 3 year old daughter is obsessed with "Star Wars". I'm whole-heartedly encouraging it, and when she's old enough, I'll introduce her to miniature gaming. I consider it my way of "giving back" to the geek community that has been so good to me
Marion: You're not the man I knew ten years ago.
Indiana: It's not the years, honey, it's the mileage.
For the last time, there are
NO FEMALE SPACE MARINES!!!!!
I never said it was a sex thingy...what iwas trying to say is that an army looking like their owners (in this case girls) would appeal more to them andit would makeit a whole lot moreacceptable for "the community". A girl playing with little miniatures shaped like a girl would look more natural thana girl playing with miniatures oflarge monsters. I DO AGREE with u on the fact that the community forces girls to do girly things.
I don't think that's true at all..
The few girls I'm aware of who play tend to prefer orks and tyranids, because they're funny and gribbly respectively. People don't set out to look for armies which are most like them, god help me if they did, because I play Emperor's Children. Now excuse me while I go score some drugs and host an orgy...
It is a very strong gender issue though, and it's not just about doing 'boy things.' Girls are encouraged to be stimulated by different kinds of mental activities altogether. I don't think most girls enjoy uncontexted logic excercises like playing turn based strategy games. I don't think it's just an aversion to violence. I know a lot of girls who enjoy roleplaying games (computerized and in real life.) They are just as violent as 40k. The difference, I think, is that there is more context in a roleplaying game. It's more relevant, and it also features a empathic/psychological aspect which you don't get in 40k.
I'm not saying girls can't play. Just look at female chess.. 10 years ago it was laughed at, but now there are some truly excellent female chess players out there. There's no mental barrier stopping them. Girls would be perfectly capable of playing Warhammer or 40k if they wanted to, but I'm saying, they're encouraged to take enjoyment from different mental processes.
At least, that's how I understand it.. There's probably some research on this somewhere.
My wife is a horror movie and vampire fanatic. She has every movie you can ever name since moving picutures began that has a vampire in it and damn near every TV show with a vampire in it.
This being said, she loves the Necrons in 40k (and has an army of them) and she really likes the Vampire Counts army in WHFB. She is one of those people who hates GW for changing undead into two seperate armies because she reads all the Anne Rice novels and would like to have things like mummies in her list too.
So in that respect I lucked up and got a Fangoria woman. However, I'm much more of a sci fi person than she is. She really doesn't like all of those space operas that I really dig like Battlestar Galactica, Dr. Who, Star Wars and admittedly even a little Star Trek.
Just to continue Mantis' train of thought, it's not just games, how many females do you see playing violent/full contact sports? The numbers are increasing, but, they are still pretty low. To the best of my knowledge, (and feel free to coreect me if I am wrong), there are no womens football teams, (North American Football). Here in Canada, (and the States to some extent), the Rugby clubs are over three quarters male, (my old club had 4 mens seniors sides, one mens colts side, one mens masters side and TWO womens sides).
It has to do with societys outlook that "girls just don't do that".
Edit- Grephaun, if you're around, what's your input on this. Do you face any bias in the hobby?

While I agree with all of you that society doesn't exactly help girls take an interest into miniature games. I don't think that it is the only problem.
The problem I see is that too many times when a guy sees a girl who takes an interest in something like miniature wargaming, videogames, and other things society think nerdy, guys start treating her different.
There are a few lady gamers at the GW where I play and they are constantly being followed or stared at or whatever. When I am playing video games I constantly hear people on the servers yelling rude remarks that these girls. Nobody would treat a lady at work or school like that.
While I am not trying to imply that you guys are the people doing this, you should be the people who help fix this problem. When you see a girl being treated like that you need to speak up and make the idiots shut up or if worse comes to worse have a talk with the store manager.
I hate to do this but I am desperate. Click the link to Votewar in my signature. Its an exciting new idea for LO and I hope that you guys will help me make it succeed.
