Since we're in the early years of a new century, I'm going to ask people what they predict will happen in the next 94 years. Anything is good, what do you hope for, what do you fear, what do you honestly think will happen?
Yes, I know this is pretty counterfactual, but it's always quite fun.
Personally, I think we can expect a big shift in international dynamics away from Europe and America, and towards the new, up and coming nations like China and India. I won't be bleak and suggest we're all going to become irrelevant, or be reduced to the third world, but I'd be willing to bet we we'll all be learning Chinese at school sometime not too far away.
My biggest hope, I think, is that better communication will be used to create more flexible, faster moving societies, where consensus can be established more directly, rather than depending on complex and intricate systems of law and government, and people can take a more direct role in determining what goes on in the world around them.
Idle thoughts over.. anyone else got anything, or wants to say anything about what I've suggested?
Now THIS is a cool topic. I tell ya, the writer in me was getting very tired of "facts" and providing "evidence" and making carefully phrased assertions. Not to mention talking about America
Time for some wild speculation and I'm all for it (Y)
OK... I reckon in first world countries there will be a great increase in life expectancy. Maybe not quite the 200 mark, but I'd say many of us in our 20s now will live to be 120-130 or so.
I agree China will become an important figure on the world stage once again. I don't think China will go around invading everyone though. As I mentioned in another thread ages ago the PRC has never invaded a country that wasn't once part of the traditional Chinese Empire. They have never and will never care about governing complete foreigners, though they may pwn everyone trade wise.
This will be matched by the decline of the US as an interventionist power. I reckon at some point in the next 100 years the American people will just get tired of always being the ones intervening and consequently being hated. They'll vote in a president who promises an isolationist foreign policy, like the one they had before WWII, and that will be a dominant theme in their foreign policy for a while.
The EU will continue to teeter between being a superpower and a bunch of bickering siblings. I think this is just the natural state of affairs for Europe, they've had several thousand years to unite and not much has changed.
The release of the movie "Ender's Game" in 2007 will prompt many people to read the fiction of Orson Scott Card. This will awaken the world to the possibilities of using the internet (or something like it) as a tool for the first ever TRUE democracy, an instantaneous, fluid and changeable means for people to argue and vote on issues in real time. parties will disappear as a political force in 1st world countries, it will be like the Greek Agora with everyone arguing and saying "vote for me!", kind of like we do on this forum. So a reasonably popular mormon scifi writer (coupled with the ubiquitous movie industry) will be responsible for the first true democracy available to everyone equally
How about that?
The Simpsons Movie will break all box office records and convince the creators to make 8 more sequals and another 15 seasons of the TV show.....
Also with the money made from the movie, Matt Groening will buy a large caribenen island and make it his own country....
By day he fought with sword and shield.....
By night he fought with pen and parchment.....
He was....The Warrior Poet.......
Fear the ANZAC Clan!!!!!
ORDER OF THE SHADOWY FLAME!!!
Do you have uber micro...????
I think China will become the new world power as America is slowly weakening, and it's power will probably diminish after the war with North Korea.
Terrorist attacks will continue until America finally gets out of Iraq, and then the radical extremists will have nothing else to do but take up croquet.
Flying cars will come around, and with them, flying speedbumps.
We will colonise the moon, and grow a cabbage patch on Mars.
GW will have another 73 price hikes until there is a revolution, and the company is taken over by Aldi, reducing the prices to an all time low, but the game will be filled with subliminal advertising.
Warfare will become virtual reality controlling robots out on the field, and computer gamers will become the new military geniuses.
What a bleak future we are in for...
Advancements in the scientific field, will lead to humans being born which are clones of there slibling and can be used for organ transplants.
There will be at least one pandemic (we are due one, since the last one was in 1918 )
The wiping out of some viruses due to immunisation
continued reasearch into cancer and aids, which will mean a lot to the people in the first world who can afford the results but diddley squat to the people in the third world who can't but who are affect the most.

i forget which country it is, but there are plans for a country over in the persian gulf area (or roundabouts there) to construct a group of tropical islands in the pattern of a miniature world, each island will be sold off individually to anyone willing to buy it. and to do with it as they will.Originally Posted by warrior poet
nothing noticably illegal though, as the country will be supplying a police force that will patrol the waters between the various islands to help keep any inter-island disputes to a minimum, and will also be allowed access on any of the islands when deemed necessary.
