My personal gripes with the James Bond filmsFirst of all, let me say that I'm a Bond fan. I've seen all the movies multiple times (including Casino Royale with David Niven) and generally liked all of them ( except the ending of "Moonraker", which was cheesy to beat the band). Now having said that, I am really starting to get tired of Bond movies. Maybe it's the fact that I've grown up, I'm not 14 anymore, and I actually insist on a plot to make a good movie. Yet just as my sensibilities have matured, the Bond films seem to have only gotten worse. In many ways, the current crop of Bond films are more akin to the Batman films of Schumaker than to any "spy genre". Just watching any of the "Bourne" movies (Identity, Supremacy), one sees just how cartoony Bond has become. In a world of nuclear terrorism, "dirty bombs" and biological weapons, Bond instead apparently is in charge of thwarting those criminal masterminds who feel the compulsive need to reveal their plans for world domination at the Baccarat table in MonteCarlo to anyone in earshot. Furthermore, those plans for "World Domination" inevitably involve a super-laser of some sort. Seriously. Just look at this list of "super-weapons" used in the recent Bond films:
Marion: You're not the man I knew ten years ago.
Indiana: It's not the years, honey, it's the mileage.
For the last time, there are
NO FEMALE SPACE MARINES!!!!!
Bond is the ultimate 'superhero'. He's handsome, smart, funny, smooth, and a frikkin' SECRET AGENT. I doubt he's going to 'realistic' anytime soon. If he was toned down, do you think people would go see the movies? I don't. I go to see Bond movies for the girls, guns, and the sharpness of the Bond character. He's cool and that's why -I- like him.
