I'm playing HoMM5 (Heroes of Might and Magic 5) alot lately and it's a very fun game to play. But I can't stop think of how un creatively their artists have worked!... I mean most of their models are copy paste versions of their warhammer fantasy counterpart.
For exsample sylvian... or "wood elves" in warhammer... look at these pictures homm5 sylvian
Take a good look at their "war dancers"... doh they couldn't even change their name could they?... and the archer... he just screams glade guard. The treant... can you get a more exsact copy of the old treeman?
next stop dugeon... or "dark elves" homm5 dugeon
... these pictures speaks for themselves... the scout looks just like the DE assassin, the only diffrence is the crossbow. The "blood maiden" is almost an exsact copy of witch elves. The grim rider is somewhat a rippoff of the coldone knights. "deep hydra" = warhydra. And last the "shadow matriarch" looks somewhat like the dark elf sorceress model... oh and "shadow dragon" = black dragon .
lastly heaven... bretonia/empire, but maybe this isn't a suprise as human races trend to look the same on every fantasy game homm5 heaven
the pictures speaks for themselves.
but now even though they've copied GW concept I think that they've accually made a very good atempt on makeing them look better... I mean I wouldn't mind my dark elves look like the dugeon units, and beast man minotaur look like the "minotaur guard" in homm5. The sylvian druid would make an excelent wood elf mage. So I know where I'm getting my insperation from next time I use my green stuff.
but still... shame on them for stealing GW art .
Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.
The whole Heroes of Might and Magic series does an excellent job of mimicing tabletop wargaming.
Besides, its a great game in it's own right, why lament the artistic similarities?
Actually of the Warhammer Armies its only Skaven and Dark Elves that can really be considered “original by those standards.
Most of the original inspiration is from Lord of the Rings and Dungeons and Dragons.
Actually a lot of HoMM5 has taken some of its visual representaion from 40k. Look at the Inferno castle, whats their symbol? Whats the symbol used by Arch devils? An eight pointed star. They also have a building called The Spawn of Chaos and a Hero who's ability is "chosen of chaos". Your parallels between the sylan and dungeon castles and the Wood/Dark elves are another match. In the Necromancer castle the liches bear striking similarity to the Nagash Model and their Vampires look identical to BD vampires.
The folks at nival and Ubisoft have obviously taken some ques from GW, but they have also revived a suucessful series with a good game, and I sincerely hope they keep it up.
Nevermore Chapter: 6200 pts; 97/49/11; Longest Streak: 9 Wins/4 Losses; Nearing Completion
yeah I know what you all are trying to say... but insperation is diffrent from "copy paste". You can't deny that they've "copy pasted" alot models directly from WHFB.
Like I'd say that blizzard used tyranids as insperation for zerg in starcraft. But I'd say that nival and Ubisoft have "copy pasted" alot of models from WHFB... but shure they've used WHFB as insperation for alot too.
I can't keep thinking if GW would try to sue them. Didn't white wolf try to sue they who made underworld for copying their world w/o permission?
But nontheless homm 5 is an excelent game and I enjoy playing it for countless of hours.
I suppose it shows how infulential GW is in the fantasy and sci-fi scenes.
However, those shameless rip off's disgust me. They actually pay people considerable sums of money to come up with this? They didn't even come up with this, the GW design team did.
I hate it when people do this. How will the themes ever move on if everyone just copies ideas? Try something original, it may even be better.....
Even dark elves are a bit dodgy.. I mean, that took a lot of thought.Originally Posted by Dark Lioness

They also ripped off D&D a lot. Menzoberranzan rings a bell? Have a look at Dungeon city.
Alnyone remembers the snake whips used by priestesses of Lolth? Tell me, are these snakes here?
But, everything taken into account, the game actually doesn't feel like a cheap rip-off.
