    #warhammerfun - guidelines for a happy chat

    After a few recent periods of unpleasant chat on #warhammerfun, I thought it was worth reminding people what was and what was not acceptable.

    This is NOT a change of policy, this is the way the channel has always been run. It’s just that a minority of people have been pushing the envelope of what is likely to be directly offensive to others in the channel, and thus require reminding of the non-discriminatory and inclusive nature of the channel.

    #Warhammerfun is intended to be inclusive and welcoming to everyone. Sometimes recently people have had to be warned, and once again this is because I have not clearly indicated what the ‘limits’ of the channel are. I have never felt the need to do this before, however.

    I would point out that I set the parameters, and am the ultimate authority for enforcing them. I try to be as inclusive as possible, and provide a safe, non-discriminating and enjoyable forum for chat. During times of general stress, such as the recent exam periods, I try to cut people some slack, however this may recently have backfired on me and the other chatters, as there are those who now think they have licence to make any kind of joke at anyone's expense.

    Just to clear up some areas of confusion:

    - Chatters get no special licence to abuse others just because they have been around the channel for longer than others. If anything this would negate any excuses for being abusive, as the regular chatters should know what is acceptable more than noobs. I am not going to bend the guidelines and rules for long-term chatters, offensive chat is still offensive even if it comes from a chat veteran.

    - It is NOT the fault of the people being abused that they do not find this abuse amusing. Whines of ‘well it was just a joke, can’t they take a joke?’ are NEVER an excuse.

    - I do not expect people on the receiving end of potential abuse to admit that they were offended in public. Many individuals, particularly ‘new’ chatters, want to be accepted by causing as little controversy as possible and would be expected to state publicly that they were not offended. Therefore, in consultation with a few others, I myself am drawing up a small list of subjects and behaviours that are likely to be offensive, and will aim to exclude these from the chat with the help of my channel Ops. I prefer to err on the side of caution, and with the aim of maintaining a non-abusive room for the enjoyment of all.

    - How I (or the dedicated Ops) choose to deal with infringements is entirely at our discretion. Warnings, such as kickbanning for a few minutes, are the preferred method of telling the room and the abuser that a line of chat is unacceptable. They also have the advantage of removing an abuser for a while. The abuser may also be in the process of escalating their abuse, ostensibly for ‘comedy’ reasons, and this also has the advantage of cutting this off before it gets really nasty. If, on return, the abuser does not calm down, then they may again be kickbanned or silenced by banning them while they remain in channel.

    - Some jokes are positively and deliberately offensive and go over the limits of acceptability. These are usually where one chatter is stating that another chatter engages in some unpleasant or illegal activity. Personal defamation is usually how most abuse occurs. Remember if you are referring to another chatter, mind what you say. Examples follow.

    There are also some topics which individuals or certain groups are likely to find offensive. This is an unfinished list:

    · Comments about rape, gang-rape, enjoying rape, rape being fun whether female chatters are present/identified or not.

    · The use of the term ‘gay’ as an insult, even against inanimate objects. ‘My gay pc is crap today’ will get you kickbanned for a while.

    · Derogatory and sweeping comments about nationalities, especially when members of that nationality are present. Comments about the politics or foreign policies of countries ARE acceptable however, as they are not directed against individuals who might be present in the chat.

    · Comments about members of the chat practicing paedophilia, or having kiddy-porn on their PCs.

    · ‘Ganging-up’ on a member, even in fun.

    To illustrate, here is some recent chat where someone was escalating an excluding line of conversation against a new chatter:

    <Lioness> rise Caroline, rise!
    * Lioness sets mode: +v darkprincess
    <Edi> yeah those go away after a while....
    <Edi> >.>
    <Edi> <.<
    <Lioness> favouritism
    <Lioness>
    * Lordofchange sets mode: +v Edi
    * Lordofchange sets mode: +v H****
    <H****> Wootage
    * Lordofchange sets mode: +v bonjordo
    * Lordofchange sets mode: +v gamesondemand
    <Lordofchange> See.
    <H****> Omg wtf
    <bonjordo> HELLS YEAHHS
    <Edi> eh
    <darkprincess> Lioness: I'm here babe
    <Lordofchange> Now we can all gang up on darkprincess.
    <SexyJapaneseGirl> o.O
    * Lordofchange glares menacingly at darkprincess
    <Edi> kinky
    <bonjordo> oh hells yeah
    <Hard_Aun> there will be NO ganging up on darkprincess
    <H****> Gangraping?
    <darkprincess> Lordofchange: u don't scare me with all that tzeentchy stuff
    <bonjordo> Lets all gang up on Hard_Aun
    <SexyJapaneseGirl> why no gang bangs?
    <SexyJapaneseGirl> =(
    <Hard_Aun> !kb h**** go wash your mouth out
    * H**** was kicked by ChanServ ((Hard_Aun) go wash your mouth out)
    -ChanServ- Kickbanned H**** from #warhammerfun

    I kickbanned H**** as he was escalating the discrimination against a chatter, and proposed gang-raping a female chatter. As it happens, I allowed him back into the chat after a minute, as this was just a warning.

    I have seen female chatters leave permanently over situations like this. This is a transcript of a chat (from a different channel) from two years ago when a channel Op, frustrated from a night out when he was brushed off by girls, realised that a new chatter was in fact a female:

    [02:23] * Librarian has joined #warhammer40k
    [02:23] * Librarian is now known as Deva
    [02:24] * Slai|cigffs| is now known as Slai
    [02:24] * Slai sighs
    [02:24] <kaj> ??
    [02:24] <kaj> feel better?
    [02:25] <Slai> no.
    [02:25] * Slai wants to rape rave girls
    [02:25] <kaj> heh
    [02:25] <kaj> god
    [02:25] <Slai> *****es
    [02:25] <Slai> doesnt matter
    [02:25] * kaj wonders if there is something in Slai's childhood that caused this
    [02:26] <Slai> the yellow pill probably makes them f***ing pralyzed anyways
    [02:26] <Slai> so they wont even notice if you bloodf*** them
    [02:26] <Deva> Nothing wrong with raves
    [02:26] <kaj> oh no
    [02:27] * kaj hides
    [02:27] <Slai> meh
    [02:27] <Slai> you just wanna get raped my me deva
    [02:27] <kaj> rofl
    [02:27] <kaj> doesn't everyone?
    [02:27] * kaj visits a rave
    [02:27] <Slai> damn
    [02:27] <Deva> Now sometime I'm going to work out how to say things in red - but meanwhile I'll just deny it
    [02:27] <Slai> deva
    [02:27] <Slai> when your name is in a line
    [02:27] <Slai> its red
    [02:28] <Slai> so you'll notice
    [02:28] <Slai> deva
    [02:28] <Slai> diva
    [02:28] <Deva> Ooohhhh...
    [02:28] <Slai> see?
    [02:28] <kaj> blah blah blah deva
    [02:28] * Slai bloodraped Deva
    [02:28] <Deva> So slai kaj deva would be red for all three?
    [02:28] <Slai> its red cause of deva
    [02:28] <Slai> not blood
    [02:28] <Slai> see?
    [02:28] <Deva> And do I even want to know what bloodraping is?
    [02:28] <kaj> well
    [02:28] * Pulan is drunk and tired... guess where I am going
    [02:28] <Slai> its getting f***ed so hard the girl bleeds.

    After this and the subsequent explicit sexual conversation, Deva was never seen again, either in IRC or on LO.

    Here is an example of recent chat that is totally outside the intentions of the room:

    [18:41] <P*****s> N++++o: hey, i know a gay name.
    [18:41] <P*****s> its N++++o.
    [18:41] <P*****s> damn.
    [18:41] <N++++o> Im gay I know
    [18:41] <P*****s> what a carpet muncher of a name.
    [18:41] <N++++o> I like girls
    [18:41] <P*****s> bet it likes a double ended dildo up the ass too.
    [18:41] <N++++o> depends the mood
    [18:41] <Lordofchange> rofl
    [18:41] <danceman> kinky!
    [18:42] <P*****s> and if thats not enough, after its been in N++++os ass, she likes to suck her own s*** off of it, too.
    [18:42] * danceman dances naked in joy
    [18:42] <P*****s> shes like:
    [18:42] <N++++o> P*****s:No
    [18:42] <P*****s> "ZOMG! MY OWN ****E!"
    [18:42] <N++++o> But I dont say no to a GS
    [18:42] <P*****s> "WHAT A WONDERFULLY ECSTATIC EXPERIENCE!"

    Completely unacceptable and immature, and would have earned an instant kickbanning for a week if I had been around to witness it. Unfortunately other impressionable members DID see this and maybe other abuses, and may have felt encouraged by them.

    Anyway, I hope this has cleared up any areas of confusion in how I aim to provide a happy chatroom.

    Ryan Dancey, Vice President of Wizards of the Coast, believed that TSR failed because of "...a near total inability to listen to its customers, hear what they were saying, and make changes to make those customers happy." Are you listening, Games Workshop ?

    First of I would like you to state that Joking about Rape should not be done, even if no female is present. there are 2 obvious resons for that:
    1; you never know wether or not it accually is a female as they are only nicks
    2; I, as a guy, finds it extremly offending to joke about it in a harsh manner. So it's not just girls who will leave because of that.

    A question is: Gay also means colourful and/or Happy. Am I allowed to use it as that?
    I like to say that I am gay(happy), and one of my minis are gay (colourful)...

    As far as I am concerned, you may use gay as an adjective in its traditionally proper sense, i.e. brightly coloured and/or cheerful. It is fairly obvious when bigots use it as a derogatory term, which is not something I would expect to see in a channel dedicated to being non-discrimatory.
