This is primarily aimed at non-US citizens, but I'd be interested to hear from Americans such as myself, too. This is less a strict poll than an open query for honest appraisals. Sweeping generalizations and stereotypes are strongly encouraged. As we in this LO forum know first-hand, individuals are often genuine human beings, and are not necessarily representative of a more generalized cultural/political perception that is otherwise believed. I promise, as an American myself, not to be offended by any dergatory statements about my country, my country's culture, or my country's citizenry as it is generally perceived by you. "You" being any individual who chooses to respond. I also promise not hold you accountable in a court of law for anything you might say here, nor will I report you to the CIA, FBI, or NSA. I also promise no flame wars, at least, none that I will initiate, continue, or even respond to.
I'm inspired to ask because I am very VERY ashamed of my country right now (and I could write a lengthy post describing why, for reasons domestic, political, and otherwise, why that is the case, but I'd rather hear from you all first), and also because a couple of the recent threads -- the Israel and Hezbollah thread being a primary example -- appear to me to be dancing delicately around the subject somewhat, and I'd prefer to tackle it head-on.
So please: Fire away!
ninjabackhand: point and click, again, really? even after i give you an military term "shock tactic" you still call it point and click.

I love all the Americans I've ever met, though perhaps that's dictated by the situations in which I've met them. In general, contrary to stereotypes, I find them charming, free-thinking and generally a lot friendlier than British people. If anything grates on me, it's generally overconfidence, which some Americans I've met have displayed a little too much of, but perhaps that's just because I was raised with a strong sense of modesty.
I've only actually been to America once for a couple of days so I don't really feel able to comment to heavily on the culture and society, but I like the idea, however historical and flawed it may actually be, of America. I think the goal of a society based on freedom of thought and belief, economic growth and opportunity is still the way forward, and I find it sad that the world seems to be turning back towards regressive authoritarianism, but perhaps I'll talk about that in another post.
The American Dream might always have been a lie, but it was a good lie. It was a lie worth building towards, and I find it sad that we haven't made more progress in reaching it.
Wow, I could write..........., but I am Canadian.
Americans are (some stereotyping):
Egocentric - Generally only concerned with what affects the U.S., and not the global community
Generous - The largest contributer of foreign aid in total, and one of the highest in per capita contributions.
Overly corporate concerned (government) - Puts lots of power in the hands of independent corporations, whether it is good for society or not.
Great people - Americans (contrary to the "Ugly American" falsehood) are some of the most hospitable people on the planet. Any individual from any country can be "ugly".
Diverse - While we try to stereotype them, it is difficult because of how diverse the country really is. Like Canada, the U.S. is many countries under one roof.
I live right next door to the U.S. and these are my experiences. I could write a lot more, but I don't want to hog the thread.
"A love for tradition has never weakened a nation, indeed it has strengthened nations in their hour of peril."
Sir Winston Churchil
I may get flammed for this, but hey this is the enhanced forum, right?
Personnaly, I think that the general population is stupid. There are exceptions as with everything.
Not going to explain, but if you don't like it, don't read it. Saves everyone the trouble.
Americans are stupid. That's right I said it.
They have more rights than most other countries and they take them for granted.
Easiest way to prove that I am right about their stupidity, watch our television.
Spongebob. I rest my case.
[rant]I hate how the Americans can act as if they're so right every time they do something. On an individual level, when they come to Australia, they're usually too far into their own heads to see what's right in front of them. I was working in a cafe once and some damn yank came up to me and ordered a glass of water... fair enough.
What wasn't fair enough was the way they wanted this glass. "I just want a glass of water, but make the water hot. And I don't want it to burn my mouth so put some ice in it please. But I don't want the ice to get all small." I backhanded her and resigned because that was the sort of thing I was getting every day. I can't handle it when one poerson makes the rest of the day that little bit more crap for the rest of us, imagine a swarm of them infesting your small coastal town asking for tofu in Hogsbreath Cafe (MEATery). That's what I get.
[/rant]Every now and again we get those few who leave Australia a little better for it, but it's rare.
[rave]And what's the deal with Americans and paying out Australia? On Rove Live, did you see how rove mentioned something to Keanu Reeves & Sandra Bullock and it 'giving them the sh1ts.' I saw those two trained apes laugh like crazy asking what it meant and then they couldn't stop saying it. Americans seem to adopt what we say to our faces to laugh at it and I'm not even going to make any assumptionas on how seriously you take these things we all do all the time and copy us. It gives me the sh1ts.
And you're all too damn spoiled at youth. "Sorry Chastity (what a stupid name), but we're going away to the bahamas for the weekend, so just take the credit card and go wild." No time with your families makes your lives a mockery. Just look at Cancun during your Spring Break. Only Jerry Springer would host those TV shows which film it on Mtv (you think Mtv is cool, because we said so), and all I see on that show is fuktards dancing nude in whipped cream on tv.
[blither]The fact that each individual on this forum from America say that they, as a nation, are stupid, makes some progress. But the points they mention (if any) are the basic ones their own staticians tell the world. If Sskut Smearth (translated to Scott Smith) says that yes, America is stupid. Soon enough, he usually goes back to being like he described the nation without even trying to raise himself from that level.[/blither
As you can all tell, I've got a lot against them. But if they are in person, not in a hive, and possess the all too uncommon COMMON SENSE, I'll get along with them.
Post your army lists in the ARMY LIST section! Not that hard!
There seems to be a lot of ignorance in a lot of what you are saying. First off it is sad that you would base your thoughts on another culture based on a bad experience in a cafe. Could not a wealthy arrogant australian have just as easily harrassed you over a glass of water? Come on now - the person you encoutered was a heel but to base your thoughts on all Americans on that is ... well ridiculous.Originally Posted by <E!_Mance>
Also What you talk about with Jerry Springer, MTV, and anything else you see on TV... Well for one thing it is TV. It is not real, it plays to the lowest common denominator, and shouldn't be used to judge a country. What you see on TV is not the way the majority are in reality. Does it mean that kind of behavior doesn't exist - of course not... but it is in the minority.
Let is also talk about your percieved notion that all Americans are spoiled. Not going to the Bahama's for the weekend so here is a credit card... come on now. The very rich are still a very small percentage of the total population in the US. The majority of us are not rich and quite the contrary we have quite a bit of poor here.
As an American I can tell you that I do not hold any pre-concieved notions of other cultures. Just as with racism I personally view that people as a whole are not bad ... just bad people. While I must admit that I am not the most prominant world traveler I have been to a few other places and for the most part have met very nice people. I myself am not rich but I am doing ok. However I work hard for what I have and know several people that are in worse places than I am. I donate to charity when I can and am always willing to help someone out if it is possible.
Just my thoughts.

Although i have never been to America, a number of my collegues on this site hail from the US and i have nothing but the highest regard for them
In the Green Day video for "American idiot", at the bit when Billie Joel mimes shooting himself in the head, i often find myself wishing that it was a real gun.
Living in the US, I can say the following: we suck.
The general population of the US is fat, stupid, retarded people who take what they get for granted, as people have said. And I think it's true. Another portion is rich people, who are not always bad. And the rest is our beloved "government of the people", that screws us more every day.
Honestly, I'd have to say I'd rather be in America than a lot of other places right now. But then, I wouldn't mind living in the UK or Australia, either. Just the shame of living in the US is sometimes... blegh.Right on.Easiest way to prove that I am right about their stupidity, watch our television.
Spongebob. I rest my case.Haha, yeah. You know what sucks? His house on the same lake as my dad's. :lOriginally Posted by Stonehambey

I went to Japan last summer for a couple weeks, and those were some of the nicest people I have ever met in my life. I've never been to the UK, but I love the accent ...do you people immitate the American accent? That seems weird o_0
edot: oh, forgot to mention, I would also definitely have to hail the people of the UK as being the best musicians.

Hmm the USA the land of freedom and yada yada. I can say that yes there are a lot of idiots in the US unfortunately but I'm sure every country has their fair share...though the US does like to show them on TV more...
Though I consider myself lucky as I live in the Midwest so the heartland of the US in other words very far away from big cities. Actually our two biggest cities here in Nebraska only have a popluation of about 200,000 each so really no overcrowding thats for sure  .
I really don't like how the culture around here is going down the tube espicallly with all the crap I see on TV now a days though I still think we may be able to redeem ourselves one day.
On how the US "polices the world" I'm not 100% sure though we were basically handed the mantle from the Brits after WWII so who knows. Though I wish our goals were always to enrich the lives of the countries we are in I'm not sure that is always true though we do help the countries we blow up :shifty: (look how well Japan is doing after we put two atomic bombs on them though I still find it strange how two countries hated each others guts so much can be so friendly now).
When I'm old enough I really would like to go to a lot of places around the world and meet the people there first person instead learning from the media and all.

Is it me or does any other necron player get annoyed when they see people saying "Necrons eat souls". How is that even possible as souls are part of the warp and necrons want nothing to do with it? Eh probaly me just me being picky.
