For those who haven't heard, the All England Club has decided to pay the male and female tennis players in this years Wimbledon tournament the same prize money, (linke below).
BBC SPORT | Tennis | Wimbledon pays equal prize money
Now I am all for equal pay for equal work, but this just strikes me as wrong. Anyone who watches this great tennis event will know that the men play best of five sets, and the women play best of three. To be paid an equal amount for what is at best two thirds the amount of work, and at worse three fifths is just descriminating against the men.
I know that most games do not go the distance, but I do not know of a female champion who has had to play more games/sets to get the final than her male counterpart. By all means, pay them a set fee for the amount of games/sets/matches they play, but do not try and make them equal when they are not.
I don't normally preach, but this just go my goat, ground my gears, or whatever phrase you prefer

Womens tennis is more fun to watch.....
Joking aside the fact that men can't compete in womens tennis and women can't compete in mens tennis means that to all intents and purposes they are different jobss.
In any case prize money isn't exactly pay its more a reward, as such the organisers can reward anyone as they see fit.

I just heard the news this morning, and as a (formerly avid) tennis aficionado and (formerly avid) tennis player, I have to say:
It's about bloody time.
And sometimes, yeah, women's tennis is a lot more fun to watch than men's tennis. I dislike all the male players who's primary game strength is their ace serve. That's just no fun to watch. When the men's game is all about power, I'm turned off. I much prefer skill, talent, and tactics.
Provided the matchup is fairly equal (and for a number of years it was horrible how little parity there was on the women's side of the game), there's a lot to be learned from watching the women players control and win points through tactical gameplay.
I know this tangent is getting longer, but does anybody else miss net play as much as I do? It used to be fairly common for players to be primarily serve-and-volley -- or at least be willing to mix it up fairly regularly -- and now almost nobody does it anymore. You can sense people holding their breaths now when someone rushes the net. "OMG! S/He's coming to the net! How risky! How dangerous!" Every year, I keep hoping the next Navritilova or McEnroe will show his or her face....
ninjabackhand: point and click, again, really? even after i give you an military term "shock tactic" you still call it point and click.

If a man and a women both train all their life at a particular sport, the male will generally become faster, stronger etc than his female counterpart. Look at all the world records for athletics events, the men's record is usually higher than the women's.
Women I'm sure put just as much effort into a 3 set game than men put into a five set game. Prize money should reflect effort over results.
It bothers me not that women get equal pay
I slave away at work, ensuring i do a thorough job and that my customer are well serviced and happy. I often come in early and leave late.
My manager pisses around all day surfing the net and leaves early.
He gets paid more than me.
I think it's the way of the world. Less is more.. or something.
